A. Civil engineers use concrete, steel, lumber, ect. to build large-scale structures. All of these materials must work together to create a safe and functional building. Materials engineers would be helpful in better selecting materials for different applications as either a cost-saving measure or increased safety measure. Compression testing (concrete), tensile testing (steel), and other sampling of raw materials will ensure that the civil engineer's plans won't be hindered by shoddy product. Unless it is a company full of old stiffs who are in the "this is how we've been doing it for 100 years we're not changing" camp, then you could also be useful in studying and researching new materials to make buildings and roads stronger than ever… [cont.]

whats the difference between an architect and civil engineer?
Q. I Know that an architect designs buildings and things but whats the difference in what a Civil engineer does? also what does a Construction Manager does differently? I want to know the difference in there jobs, not how there employed, learn to read before you answer.
Asked by jamel - Sat May 17 14:08:06 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. An architect is someone who is free to dream up just about anything they want and call it a structure. They are not bound by any laws physical or otherwise. A civil engineer is someone whose work is governed by the laws of physics and mandated codes. They try to covert the architect's dreams into a design that can actually be built. A construction manager is the person who tries to build the thing the architect dreamed up and the engineer designed.

Any one been a civil engineer in military?
Q. I was wondering if any one has been a civil engineer in the military? (I am referring to having a 4 year degree) Do you feel like you gained experience like you would have in the civilian world? How was finding a job when you got out? Are work environments similar in both worlds? Thanks for any information.

A. Sorry, I am not a civil engineer, but I have recently dealt with the engineers from the base I am at. Those guys know there stuff and I had to convince them that building onto my facility was a good idea. Then they spat off a bunch of building requirements that I didn't know about that I had to add to my project. So in this aspect I am sure you would get just as much experiance and having your military service on your application.

A. The BSIT is a very good and useful degree. More students should consider getting one, because it combines a "technology" (such as Civil Technology in your case) and several business courses. You should be ready now for at least a supervisory position. I don't think more than one or two of your BSIT "technical" courses will transfer to a degree in Civil Engineering. You "general ed" courses may or may not transfer, depending on school policy. (One problem is that some schools only recognize courses taken less than five years ago). My guess is there there are three better options for you than attempting a full bore degree in Civil Engineering. 1) You can get an MSIT in Technology Management, perhaps with a focus in Construction… [cont.]
