The school of thought arising from this approach is known as cognitivism which is interested in how people mentally represent information processing. It had its foundations in the work of Wilhelm Wundt, Gestalt psychology of Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler, and Kurt Koffka, and in the work of Jean Piaget, who provided a theory of stages/phases that describe children's cognitive development. Cognitive psychologists use psychophysical and experimental approaches to understand, diagnose, and solve problems, concerning themselves with the mental processes which mediate between stimulus and response. Cognitive theory contends that solutions to problems take the form of algorithms—rules that are not necessarily understood but promise a solution, or heuristics—rules that are understood but that do not always guarantee solutions. In other instances, solutions may be found through insight, a sudden awareness of relationships. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by jrh8585 - Wed May 26 21:57:21 2010 How applicable is biology to social and cognitive psychology? Q. I am required to take a science sequence next year for college, and I can't decide if I should take biology 101 & 102, just like everyone else, and over the same stuff I grueled over in high school. I want to take meteorology 101 & 102, because it will be a refreshing change to science courses that I have been used to, but I'm not sure how much biology could help with my psychology major. If you've already done most of what you think will be covered in Biology 101 and 102, I suggest taking the subject you actually want to take. We have a different system here in the UK, and my Psychology course didn't require a Science grade, which I was grateful of because I'm not great at it, but I found that a little strange. However, all the biology we need in relation to Psychology is covered in the subject, and so far I've not had much trouble understanding it. The main points covered in Psychology are the functions of the brain, hormones, and genes (e.g. how mental illnesses can be passed down).
