For our department its a 6 month academy followed by 4 month FTO training. Then the next 14 months you're on probation-can be fired for any reason. We do the Cooper Test (or variation of) each year. Sits-ups, bench press, 1 1/2 mile run and flexibilty. To be hired to had to pass a "Physical Abilities Test", run a certain distance, go over a 6ft fence, under something, through a window etc, carry a "body" so far etc...within a certain timeframe.
