From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In biological terms, a community is a group of interacting organisms sharing an environment. In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness. In sociology, the concept of community has caused infinite debate, and sociologists are yet to reach agreement on a definition of the term. There were ninety-four discrete definitions of the term by the mid-1950s. Traditionally a "community" has been defined as a group of interacting people living in a common location. The word is often used to refer to a group that is organized around common values and social cohesion within a shared geographical location, generally in social units larger than a household. The word can also refer to the national community or global community. The word "community" is derived from the Old French communité which is derived from the Latin communitas, a broad term for fellowship or organised society. Since the advent of the Internet, the concept of community no longer has geographical limitations, as people can now virtually gather in an online community and share common interests regardless of physical location. GNU Free Documentation License How do community newspapers get nice letters from the Mayor, and political leaders in their district? Q. How can a community newspaper generate supportive letters from their community leaders for publishing? How would such a letter be written? Would they ask for a specific response? Should they start on the top of the ladder and go for it? How does a community newspaper hit a home run and land an interview from a well known politician? Asked by NOLA Girl in Texas - Thu Sep 4 03:56:44 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The City Council pays top dollar for advertising and then get nice reviews from the owner of the newspaper.. If City Council decided to use another newspaper or changed the medium [Internet] to advertise. Then the newspaper will come out and say the mayor doesn't know what she/he doing ,their wasting tax payers money etc etc etc So everything stays the same. Q. Im a sociology major currently enrolled in a full time national community service program (AmeriCorps * NCCC) and I am looking for a place to continue my work in community service once I return to Michigan. Any suggestions would be greatly appretiated. Asked by Katy D - Sun Oct 7 21:48:50 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hi Katy! I too am from Michigan and I can tell you that the commission on aging would love to have you help. They are always looking for helpers for the meals on wheels program. Also volunteer your time at any nursing home. The animal shelters appreciate volunteers too. Any county run organization will appreciate any time you could give them. Don`t forget about hospice and respite care for the home-bound/disabled people. Good Luck! Answered by MISTY - Mon Oct 8 13:36:08 2007 My community is being overrun with crime. What can I do to improve it without encountering politics?
Q. This is a weird question. My community has, in the past few years, been facing a massive increase in crime. I would love to make a difference and help curb it but I don't know what to do. I am young and not very sure what I want to do for a living. I have lightly considered becoming a police officer but I have read endless stories and articles about how the politicians of the community are hindering the police department's ability to fight the crime. Due to politics, the police force of the area is taking a big hit at a time when the community needs police protection to be at the forefront of the politicians' minds. The police officers are great in the area and I hold the utmost admiration for all of them (my family has several ties to the… [cont.] Asked by Anonimity - Sun Sep 17 04:25:03 2006 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. This is too large a problem for one person to grapple. There must be others who are concerned about this. Groups and clubs can accomplish much more than a single person. Are there any locally you can join? Getting involved with your community is always a great start, putting forward your views and listening to others. You will probably be amazed how many like-minded people there are. You are not alone. Good luck.
