Community service done on a national level: Is the military considered a community service?
Q. Community service done on a national level: Is the military a community service Is being in the military a civic duty? Is a civic duty the same as community service? Palin 3- Then it would not be 'volunteering' for the military but a forced action like jury duty. Penalties will be induced!! That is very scary!

A. I'm not sure but do know Mr. Obama mentions a year of National Service...hmmm I believe that just might mean the military.

How do community newspapers get nice letters from the Mayor, and political leaders in their district?
Q. How can a community newspaper generate supportive letters from their community leaders for publishing? How would such a letter be written? Would they ask for a specific response? Should they start on the top of the ladder and go for it? How does a community newspaper hit a home run and land an interview from a well known politician?
Asked by NOLA Girl in Texas - Thu Sep 4 03:56:44 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The City Council pays top dollar for advertising and then get nice reviews from the owner of the newspaper.. If City Council decided to use another newspaper or changed the medium [Internet] to advertise. Then the newspaper will come out and say the mayor doesn't know what she/he doing ,their wasting tax payers money etc etc etc So everything stays the same. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours...lol

How do people transfer from Community Colleges to 4 year University?
Q. Hi, I heard most of community college students transfer from community colleges to University or attend university after their 2 years with Assosiate degree. After completing your first year at community college, can you transfer to universities such as University of Washington with the Assosiate's degree and certain amount of GPA and if so, how much GPA do you need in average? Also, if you complete 2 years of education with Assosiate's degree in Community college, are you pretty much guaranteed to attend 4 year universities such as University of Washington? Thanks for the answers in advance!

A. Make sure the schools are each accredited or else classes at community college may not transfer to the Univ. Get in contact with a counselor at the Univ to make sure that your classes correspond to the major at the Univ. For example: Your AA in Business may not require you to take Accounting II, but your BS in Business probably does...if your community college offers it, take it there!! Most likely it will be a lot easier and cheaper. Most of the time, if you go to a Univ within same state as you received your AA, you are guaranteed to attend, of course your GPA has to be acceptable for the major your are choosing at the Univ.

Can a person transfer from one community college to another cc and still receive a associate degree?
Q. Can a person transfer from one community college to another community college and still receive and associates degree? Is there a certain amount of credits that once you exceed that number of credits that you can't transfer from one community college to another community college? Has anybody done this before?
Asked by sb0983 - Mon May 26 15:59:53 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It really depends on how many of your credits transfer. Not all credits from the first community college will be equivalent to classes at the second community college. In this case, they would then become electives. Also, many colleges require students to take a certain number of hours in their university to get the degree. The number of required hours will vary by school, though. They do this to prevent people from taking 99% of their classes at a separate university, transferring and taking 1% of their classes at THEIR institution and asking for a degree from them. They won't say you can't transfer, but they may require you to take extra classes to make up for the requirement you need to take at their college.

How many community colleges in America allow special diploma recipients to go to a community college?
Q. I recently met someone at my community college, with a special diploma, she's near 40, and struggles with her remedial classes. To my understanding my college requires at least a GED if not a high school diploma. I was under the impression a special education diploma wasn't sufficient enough.

Community Service Ideas with which I can practice Management skills?
Q. I am in a management class at a university. One of the assignment is to form a group with classmates and do some community service with which we can practice our management skills such as planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling. We have 5 members in our team. Any good ideas?
Asked by Gabriel J - Wed Jun 18 19:25:33 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Matching volunteers, including yourselves, to needs in your community would be a good way; most areas have nothing like a clearing house. for people or products. (Money-raising activities are, sorry, a dime a dozen.) You could also volunteer with smaller community service agencies to trouble-shoot their logistical bottlenecks. A transportation system to get willing volunteers to the places that need their help is a need in most towns.

Q. I ask this question, because I want to see how many people actually know of a community service near them, that ISN'T a national chain. I want names also.

A. We have the Knoxville Soup Kitchen, a small organization that runs a (you guessed it!) Soup Kitchen for homeless near downtown Knoxville. There are also dozens of church charities, like clothing drives and rummage sales. There is also one small domestic abuse shelter in town, but I think they are working on getting connected to a national group. How about your community?

Community Service Ideas for a junior in highschool?
Q. I have really been thinking about volunteering somewhere because i really want to. I am out of ideas? Do people usually have community service reflect their interests? If so, I am very interested in the arts, and the field of advertising and design, media, etc. I was wanting to do something different, and at the same time let it include my interests. I also like watching classic movies- and as a teen I don't think it is very common (for teenagers). I think classic movies teach great lessons. Could I possibly do something involving that? please help? I am so confused.

A. Hi there, First off, I just want to tell you that I think it's great that you've decided that you want to volunteer. So many teenagers today have to be pushed into doing volunteer work so KUDOS to you! :-) Here is the link to a website that I have found very useful. People and organizations list their volunteer opportunities and you can refine your search to include zip code as well as interest (I know Arts & Culture is an option for interests): www.volunteermatch.org. Best of luck and don't lose that passion!!!

Also volunteer your time at any nursing home. The animal shelters appreciate volunteers too. Any county run organization will appreciate any time you could give them. Don`t forget about hospice and respite care for the home-bound/disabled people. Good Luck!

Transferring from a community college - How does it work?
Q. I am confused about how transferring from a community college works. After completing 2 years at a community college, can you just apply and transfer to any other college/university, or only if they accept the credits? Do only certain colleges and universities accept credits from only certain community colleges? Do you need to know if the 4-year college will accept the credits for the classes at the community college BEFORE applying to a community college?
Asked by qwertyyy - Tue Oct 21 00:23:10 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I do not think you have anything to worry about because the transition between the Associate's and Bachelor's levels is usually smooth. 1. What you have to look out for very much is that your credits will only transfer if you have C's or above, some schools have stricter rules but in general, if you have no grades worse than C's, everything will transfer. 2. Find an accredited institution because credits from a non-accredited school will not transfer.

A. It is a tough thing to do. Some members of our community tried that and it did not work. The different org. did not want to come under the umbrella because of differences in each group's Mission Statement. The umbrella group was attempting to coordinate the donations of time and money to ensure better results. It cause such a rift in the Community that the general consensus was to have each organization send two representatives for discussions on Community problems.

A. 8 hours sounds reasonable, since you may not be at home for most of the day; 16 hours if they will include over-night hours. I am glad to hear that you are choosing to give back to your community through fostering a puppy. I was unaware that they had programs like that for offenders. In my sources section are some resources for caring for a dog. I hope they are of help to you during your fostering.

What is a good community college in Illinois?
Q. As of the moment, I'm in high school and considering different community colleges to go to. I'm planning to get my BSN in nursing and I want to get rid of general classes and hopefully transfer to UIC after my two years in the CC. What is a good community college in IL?

How to become involved with my local community and goverment?
Q. I live in Miami, Florida and I am almost 17 years old. I want to become more involved with my community and maybe my local courts. What can I do? Is there any community service or teen programs? All I want is some experience and knowledge of how my community runs. Thanks.

A. You can join the Local Chamber of Commerce, as an Individual Membership. Also, there are organizations such as the Young Democrats. And there are Historical / Genealogy Societies that you can join as a Member. Most of them are not very high in expense to join. And you can be a volunteer at a hospital, nursing home too. When you join the Chamber of Commerce, you'll get invited to be in a photo when new businesses are opened for Ribbon-Cutting. And you can "sit in" on a Public Meeting of the City Council / County Commissioners Meeting, when it is Not a Closed to the Public, meeting. You can submit news to the local newspaper, and / or asked to be a junior reporter, volunteerily of course. You may wish to be a volunteer at a Senior Citizens… [cont.]

How does Volunteering help financially? [in a community]?
Q. For example, "Does the community recive money?, Or does the community benefit in any way that has to do with money?. I mean I know you dont have to pay nor do they pay us but maybe does it save the community more money? Please I just want a good explaination.

A. The community reveives the benefit because if someone volunteers that means the business doesn't have to pay an employee thus having to raise the cost of the product or service to you.
