What are some writing competitions available to teenagers?
Q. I really enjoy writing and I am looking for some writing competitions that I might offer cash prizes. I am bored and I just really want a way to express my creativity. I would prefer it if they were mail-in or online-submission type competitions. Thanks in Advance! :-)

Anyone know where to find info on How to win competitions or sweepstakes?
Q. Hi, I have just started entering competitions and sweepstakes, I have won a few things and its a great hobby but I am wondering if anyone knows where I can find out how to win competitions? I would love to get advice from other people who have made winning prizes a full time hobby because it seems really great. Advice on how to win 25 word or less competitions or tie breakers or slogan contests I think they are called in other countries, anything to increase my wins would be great. Thanks ;)

Are there any western horseback riding competitions that you can compete in with an older horse?
Q. My horse is 20 and i was wondering if there are any competitions i could enter for western riding. Is there such a thing as western showing that is kinda like dressage for english?
Asked by 2htoohorse - Wed Nov 21 23:28:04 2007 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments
A. You can show any horse in western, age or breed doesn't matter. (I placed in western pleasure on a trakehner!) At some shows around here we have something called Open Reining Horsemanship. It's like beginner reining/western pleasure. Reining is the western equivalent of dressage. They don't have ORH at most shows, but...yeah. It's lead changes, spins, collected/extended gaits, stops, rollbacks, etc. If you can't find a beginner reining show (even the beginner classes usually take an experienced horse) try western pleasure and horsemanship. Horsemanship has patterns that are kind of like reining or dressage. Turning on haunches, loping from the walk, etc. Find a trainer/riding instructor and have them help you look. They will be more… [cont.]

What breed of dogs compete in the obstacle competitions?
Q. I think it would be really fun to train a dog for the agility competitions, but I don't know what breeds would be the best for that sort of thing. Can you give me a few names?

A. Usually border collies and Australian sheepdogs excel in that sort of competition, but ANY dog can compete! Its great exercise and fun! I've seen dachshunds, golden retrievers, border terriers, yorkies, jack russels, etc. It's a great thing to do for any breed of dog! That being said, I wouldn't get a certain type of dog just for agility. Make sure you do your research and find the type of dog that fits your life style. Don't get a dog just because you think agility will be fun and easy. Its never easy, no matter what breed of dog you get. You need to take into account that you will be living with the pup for 15 years. What advice can you provide when training for endurance competitions?
Q. Many people think of training as just focusing on swimming, biking and running workouts, allocating enough time for each. On one hand, I completely agree that training for all three is critical to success, but I have always been a proponent of the smaller things that often go overlooked such as stretching, mental focus, strength training and proper nutrition. When you combine all of the above, you create a recipe for success to be highly competitive in endurance competitions.

Q. I often read posts on message boards where people are asking about songs or something for theatre competitions. Does anyone know how to find out about those? Ones outside of school mostly, because my school doesn't have a very big theatre program. I live in Illinois if that is important.

What is the most important thing that judges look for when judging piano competitions?
Q. What is the biggest mistake made in piano competitions?

A. Depending on your level of technical facility and the group you're being judged with, judges will look for different levels of interpretational depth. The first thing that will get you kicked out is inaccuracies; practise with a metrenome every day with your hands seperate and then together, working each up to the marked tempo and faster so that you have complete mastery and confidence on each passage. The next level of achievement is tempo- are your tempos close to those marked, and do they allow you to properly express each phrase? Next is phrasing, which is the art of making each line of notes into a musical idea. This has to do with changing dynamics and the use of rubato. There are many ways in which you can shape a phrase; -Directiona [cont.]

A. Well, I'm not sure how it's done in Australia, but in the USA the best way to get involved in competitions is to join a dance team/company for a dance studio, where you can compete with solo dances as well as duets, trios, and small and large groups in a variety of genres.
