In chemistry, concentration is the measure of how much of a given substance there is mixed with another substance. This can apply to any sort of chemical mixture, but most frequently the concept is limited to homogeneous solutions, where it refers to the amount of solute in the solvent. To concentrate a solution, one must add more solute (e.g. alcohol), or reduce the amount of solvent (e.g. water). By contrast, to dilute a solution, one must add more solvent, or reduce the amount of solute. Unless two substances are fully miscible there exists a concentration at which no further solute will dissolve in a solution. At this point, the solution is said to be saturated. If additional solute is added to a saturated solution, it will not dissolve (except in certain circumstances, when supersaturation may occur). Instead, phase separation will occur, leading to either coexisting phases or a suspension. The point of saturation depends on many variables such as ambient temperature and the precise chemical nature of the solvent and solute. Analytical concentration includes all the forms of that substance in the solution. From Wikipedia under the

The problem states: We prepared a diluted solution of HCL by introducing 16,6 mL HCL at a concentration of 37.0% in a flask of 2 L afterward filled to the top (meaning till 2L) with H20. What is the concentration? Asked by Elmi - Wed Dec 17 13:39:02 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It means that in the original bottle you took the HCL from, as sold by the industry, contains 37 gr of HCL in every 100 gr of solvent (which in most cases is water). Answered by Mariadora S - Wed Dec 17 13:52:35 2008 How do you find concentration of a weak base in titration if not given volume? Q. You're trying to neutralize a strong acid like HCl with a weak base, and given the concentration of the acid. You're also given the pKa of both the acid and the base, and asked to find the concentration of weak base needed to reach the end point of titration. How can you go about solving this when you aren't given any volumes? Asked by Kyle M - Sun Nov 15 10:49:12 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. pKa is a function of concentration, and concentration is a function of volume.
