From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. There are two prevailing theories in contemporary philosophy which attempt to explain the nature of concepts (abstract term: conception). The representational theory of mind proposes that concepts are mental representations, while the semantic theory of concepts (originating with Frege's distinction between concept and object) holds that they are abstract objects. Ideas are taken to be concepts, although abstract concepts do not necessarily appear to the mind as images as some ideas do. Many philosophers consider concepts to be a fundamental ontological category of being. A concept is a cognitive unit of meaning— an abstract idea or a mental symbol sometimes defined as a "unit of knowledge," built from other units which act as a concept's characteristics. A concept is typically associated with a corresponding representation in a language or symbology such as a word. The meaning of "concept" is explored in mainstream cognitive science, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind. The term "concept" is traced back to 1554–60 (l. conceptum - something conceived), but what is today termed "the classical theory of concepts" is the theory of Aristotle on the definition of terms. GNU Free Documentation License When did the concept of received pronunciation in the English language develop? Q. I've always wondered whether this concept was around when Shakespeare's plays were performed. Nowadays we expect the main (especially regal and well-to-do) characters to speak in RP, but is this realistic? I never know, hence this question. Whether you call it Received Pronunciation, Queen's English, BBC English, or whatever, the concept of an upper-class way of speaking has been around for centuries, and that pronunciation has changed over time. I suggest you read Robert McNeil's book 'The Story of English' or (better yet) watch the nine-part series, which is available on videotape. There's a fascinating segment comparing two groups of university students roughly 50 years apart and noting how elements of their speech have changed during that period. I don't want a copy and paste from the internet if I wanted to read I'd look it up thanks! Asked by Chelsea Meow - Wed Feb 11 18:42:35 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Basically everyone (usually 4 players) has 13 cards each. Each round each player has to get rid of one card; the person whose card is the highest that round gets all four cards, which is bad. But only hearts count as points. Each heart you get gives you one point, and a queen of spades gives you 13 points. The game continues until someone gets a score over 100. The winner is the one with the lowest score. There are other rules, such as passing, shooting the moon, etc., but if you want to learn about those then I suggest you read the rules and play the game. Q. The concept of competitive advantage is as important for non-profit organizations as it is for profit organizations . Do you agree with this statement or not? Explain with examples to justify your answer. Asked by Info Seeker - Sun Jun 29 08:01:02 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Sure. The only difference between a non-profit and a for-profit organization it that a for-profit organization has shareholders that are entitled to a share of the firm's proceeds, while a non-profit organizations funds are reinvested into the organization's future activities. In either case, you need a competitive advantage in order to successfully operate your organization and continue to operate into the future. Consider a college or univeristy, which is a well-known example of a non-profit organization. If the school does not have a competitive advantage, or some attractive attribues that will allow it to attract students, it will run out of money and cease to operate. Many non-profit groups also rely heavily on donations as a… [cont.] Answered by Jimmmminy - Sun Jun 29 08:04:27 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "concept" Nail salons on the cutting (and polishing) edge
