Water pressure? Where do you get the conversion factor of 32 from?
Q. Use the formula P = pgh/gc, where capital P is the pressure at a particular depth, g is the acceleration due to gravity or 32ft/sec2, gc is the conversion factor (usually 32) h is the depth in meters P = 62*32*50/32 =3100lb/in2. Use other depths to find other answers.
Asked by eona18 - Sun Feb 19 20:05:17 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The normal equation for water pressure is P=rho*g*h where g is the acceleration of gravity, rho is density, or mass per unit volume and h is the depth of the water. Since you want to compute in avoirdupois units for some incredible reason, you are going to have to deal with some confusion. The density of water in avoirdupois units is actually m/L^3 where m is in slugs, and L is in feet. However, we know that the weight of a cubic foot of water is 62 lbs. A lb is a unit of force, and F=mg, so m=F/g= 62 lbs/(32 ft/sec/sec)= 62/32 slugs. Then in your equation, P=rho*g*h =(F/g)/(L^3)*g*h =(F/L^3)*g*h/g Now substituting, F/L^3=62 lb/ft^3 g=32 ft/sec/sec Let h=50 feet, say then P=(62 lb/ft^3)*50ft =62*50lb/ft^2 =3100 lb/ft^2 I do… [cont.]

A. BFT = Beaufort Wind Scale? KLM = Kilometers? If these assumptions concerning your question are correct, their is no direct conversion; just a reference scale where: BFT >> KPH 1 >> 1 - 6 2 >> 7-11 3 >> 12-19 4 >> 20-29 5 >> 30-39 6 >> 40-50 7 >> 51-62 8 >> 63-75 9 >> 76-87 10 >> 88-102 11 >>103-117 12 >> greater than 117

Do significant figures matter in a conversion factor problems?
Q. Because it is technically multiplication and I was wondering how to go about this.
Asked by Okay.... - Fri Jun 26 09:35:01 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. of course they do. here's an example...12 cm = ? in 12 cm x (1.00 in / 2.54 cm) = 4.7 in... 2 sig figs *** a more complicated example... 1.2 g / cm x (1.00 lb / 454 g) x (2.54 cm / 1 in) x (12 in / 1 ft) = 75 lbs / ft ... 2 sig figs. *** determining sig figs from this type of problem is easy. Since it's all multiplication and division, you go by the factor with the least sig figs. as opposed to addition or subtraction, where you would have to determine which factor was the least precise..

A. Ah, this is what they called train-tracks when I was in school. It's just a silly way to check that you're using the right units. The general idea is this: if your car gets 20 miles to the gallon, and you fill it up with 15 gallons of gas, then you can drive 300 miles before you need to refill the tank. You can see this by writing (I hope this works with your font) 20 miles 15 gallons --- x --- = 300 miles 1 gallon 1 because the gallons on the bottom of the first number cancel out with the gallons on the top of the second number. Does that make sense to you?

Q. Anyone? Thank you.
Asked by settlersguru - Mon Oct 27 16:44:00 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This number is called the Avogadro constant. "The value of the Avogadro constant was first indicated by Johann Josef Loschmidt who, in 1865, estimated the average diameter of the molecules in air by a method that is equivalent to calculating the number of particles in a given volume of gas." It is really just an arbitrary number, as a "mole" has no real meaning. It is just a measure of amount of substance. "1. The mole is the amount of substance of a system which contains as many elementary entities as there are atoms in 0.012 kilogram of carbon 12; its symbol is mol . 2. When the mole is used, the elementary entities must be specified and may be atoms, molecules, ions, electrons, other particles, or specified groups of such particles. [cont.]
