From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In mathematics and its applications, a coordinate (or co-ordinate) system is a system for assigning an n-tuple of numbers or scalars to each point in an n-dimensional space. This concept is part of the theory of manifolds. "Scalars" in many cases means real numbers, but, depending on context, can mean complex numbers or elements of some other commutative ring. For complicated spaces, it is often not possible to provide one consistent practical coordinate system for the entire space. In this case, a collection of coordinate systems, called graphs, are put together to form an atlas covering the whole space. A simple example (which motivates the terminology) is the surface of the earth. Although a specific coordinate system is useful for numerical calculations in a given space, the space itself is considered to exist independently of any particular choice of coordinates. From this point of view, a coordinate on a space is simply a function from the space (or a subset of the space) to the scalars. When the space has additional structure, one (typically) restricts attention to the functions which are compatible with this structure. Examples include:
The coordinates on a space transform naturally (by pullback) under the group of automorphisms of the space, and the set of all coordinates is a commutative ring called the coordinate ring of the space. In informal usage, coordinate systems can have singularities: these are points where one or more of the coordinates is not well-defined. For example, the origin in the polar coordinate system (r,θ) on the plane is singular, because although the radial coordinate has a well-defined value (r = 0) at the origin, θ can be any angle, and so is not a well-defined function at the origin. Asked by khoa n - Thu Nov 29 13:56:30 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well you could graph the line and confirm visually, but you need to know the slope and one point already on the line. You could derive the formula for the line using the slope intercept form, y = mx + b, when m is the slope and b is the y intercept (y value when x = 0), Then solve for y when x is equal to the x value of the coordinate. If I drew a decagon in a coordinate plane, with the verticies: (11,14) (15,15) (18,12) (19,9) (18,6) (15,4) (11,4) (8,6) (7,9) (8,12), how would I find a system of inequalities corresponding to the polygon that I drew? Please help! Quick response receives best answer! Asked by snowbunny4436 - Fri Sep 26 21:20:16 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Define the lines that form the sides and then write inequalities where the domain is the two vertices x values. The intersection of all of those inequalities should give you the polygon. Answered by J - Fri Sep 26 21:30:56 2008 How do you graph a fraction on a coordinate plane?
Q. I have already asked this question, but I didn't give enough details. The directions read, "Model each rule with a table of values and a graph." The problem is y = 1/4x. I already did the table of values. The first value is 1. So it would be 1/4(1) which is 1/4. How would I graph 1/4 on a coordinate plane? Asked by shaunte_lovee - Tue Jan 8 01:41:06 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. 1/4 is equal to .25 so the point for that coordinate will be between 0 and 1, but closer to 0...I know that's not very detailed but hopefully it helps...
