What songs are related to coping with a miscarriage?
Q. I am approaching the 1 year anniversary of my miscarriage and I am having a hard time coping. Are there any good songs that are related to this that aren't all gospely?

A. One I like is George Canyon's "My Name". He wrote it when a friend of his had a miscarriage, and wanted it to help people get through miscarriage. (You can play it from the site). There are a lot of amazing poems around too, let me know if you would like me to email you some. Hugs for your upcoming EDD.

What are some good ways of coping with chronic pain other than medication?
Q. I have a friend who suffers with chronic pain both physical and it seems mental. I was wondering about what to suggest to her in the way of alternative coping methods for pain?
Asked by D K - Tue Nov 28 18:05:26 2006 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I have tried it all. I have chronic hip bursitis for 2 and a half years. I do yoga, pilates and have tried several antiinflammatories, steroid injections, physiotherapy, massage, ultrasound etc. Most things work for a week or two and then it comes back stronger than ever. They finally started me on an antidepressant called Cymbalta. I really insist that I am not depressed. I am very active swim, walk several miles several days a week,, golf. For some reason it seems to be taking the edge off of the pain. I am able to sleep better and I feel more limber. Go figure.

Will it ever rain? How are horse owners coping with the drought?
Q. I am curious to know how horse owners are coping with the drought. In the US Midwest square hay bale prices have risen to $6 to $8 a bale already (in my area). It is expected to reach even higher during the winter months. Most can't even find the hay to buy. For many there was no second hay cutting or the yields were 1/3 of what they normally get. The pastures here look desert hard pan. There is little to no vegitation, even the weeds are dying. Last I heard we our over ten inches below the average rainfall! Many people are getting out of horses entirely. Some are giving them away or giving their tack away if the people will just take the horses off their hands. As a horseowner I was proactive and prepared early, but my friends have not… [cont.]

A. It's pretty dire here too in KY but we know that with the amount of horse farms here, hay will be shipped in from Canada if it comes to it, just depends how much we will have to pay. I bought a ton last week for winter at $5.25 per bale (timothy). We are just hoping for some rain because everything is yellow and burnt, we might get some this weekend. I haven't heard anything as bad as what you are experiencing - yet!

I am renovating my pool and need to replace the vinyl coping that covers 2 x 8' s which go all around my pool. while i replaced this with no problem 12 years ago, I can not find anything on the internet today. How do I stop feeling guilty about living my life while coping with a death?
Q. I'm currently coping with a death of someone I knew (suicide actually), and I'm finding that I feel intensely guilty any time I laugh, feel happy, or begin to settle back into regular life again. It's almost like if I feel good again I'm betraying this person or disrespecting their memory. Is this normal and how do I get over this feeling? Yes, this death occurred 3 days ago, so it's still fresh in my mind. Thanks to everyone for the comforting words.
Asked by Seth M - Mon Jun 30 20:01:48 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, it is completely normal. You might be thinking about how unfair it is that you get to continue to laugh and live while your friend no longer can. It's hard to accept, but s**t happens. Death is the ultimate normal thing, we will all get there eventually. By not living and loving the life you have left, it is as if you are dying prematurely, though still alive, and that is a true tragedy. Perhaps a different way to look at it is that you have the opportunity to laugh and smile and live for this other person as well as for yourself. What better tribute to a loved one than to live as fully and fantastically and beautifully as you can? And as far as getting over your feelings, there really is no way. You just need to feel them, accept… [cont.]

What to do about daughter not coping after moving out?
Q. My 18 year old daughter has recently moved out of home and interstate to work. She is not coping and I am becoming very stressed with worry over her. She hates her job, is not going anywhere when she is not working and is constantly in tears. I miss her very much and it is tearing out my heart every time I hear her in tears on the phone. She is living with her boyfriend, which I thought would be a comfort for her but she's missing me too much, I think, to lean on him.

A. I am sorry for you and your daughter but I am afraid that you just have to step back and let her find her own solution to this problem. You can not stop everything painful or difficult happening to her and she needs to learn how to deal with it her self. I know it is hard but you need to encourage her to stick it out . Suggest that she tries to make some new friends, perhaps her and her boyfriend could join a club.

what can I use to cover the brick pool coping to keep the rough edges from destroying the safety cover?
Q. The coping on my pool is rough brick and it is wearing significantly on the underside of the safety cover which is pretty expensive to replace. I need something smooth to line the coping and stay in place. Possibly rubber strips would adhere to the brick but where can i obtain something like that?
Asked by bshwkr23 - Sat Sep 6 12:30:23 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. you can order pieces that are specifically made by the cover company (loop-loc?) to go underneath the cover to prevent this. My company sells these safety covers and we tell customers that don't want to spend the extra money to cut strips from old carpet and place underneath the cover. But if you have heavy winds you will want to check occasionally as the wind blows the covers up slightly and can blow these pieces into the pool. 3M makes adhesive strips that are specifically made for the safety covers that you can use on the bottom and top side for reinforcement also.

A. You just have to be super organized. Back-in-the-day I once took 18 semester hours. It was tough. With your four subjects you just have to do daily, weekly, and final planning. You can't let yourself get behind. Keep up with your daily work and use weekend or other times to work on those projects that will be coming due later. Make yourself a lot of notes about your assignments, when they are due, etc. Don't let others distract you form getting everything completed. As to what you will learn? I think education/learning is not so much about specifics as it is about generalizations, i.e., how do you find information on a subject once it has been completed. What is a definition of the subject itself? I do believe that some college/university… [cont.]

Are some diseases really just ways of coping?
Q. Are some mental disorders like depression, adhd, ocd, eating disorders, anxiety problems and others really just ways of coping with our modern world today? Would we have these if we lived naturally? *Not trying to offend anyone, just curious, because I have gotten diagnosed with a few of these but I feel it's really me trying to cope with the craziness of modern life.

A. Sure, very possible. Probable in many cases. You do have a choice to select a gentler simpler way of life with no TV and no internet and no hassles of making ends meet. There are still quite a few communal places in this country where people just get together and live. They grow food, make clothes, and hang out.

Know any good quotes about resilience, coping, staying strong, going through tough times etc?
Q. My thesis is on educational resilience among 5-year olds who have just started school. I am looking at what resources help them cope with the transition to school and do well, especially for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. I'd love to include a relevant quote to set the scene. It could be about resilience/coping with tough times, young children, starting school, going through tough times, etc. Any good quotes? Could be from anywhere, proverbs, famous people, whatever. Ta! A. Don't worry about it. This is a great opportunity for your friend, so you should try to be happy for her. Yeah, at first its going to be hard to deal with, but in time it will get easier. My best advice is to start making new friends now. Gradually extend your social circle so that you have new people who can become your new best friend once your old one leaves. Besides that, don't stress out. In today's world, its really easy to keep in touch with people that you care about. You guys could e-mail/facebook/myspace/i nstant message/ or write letters to each other. Just because you are far away doesn't mean that you can't still keep in contact. It'll all turn out alright. Trust me. Good luck! Hope this helped!

How are you coping in this recession? If we head towards depression what is your backup plan?
Q. If this stimulus package passes and it doesn't work out and we head towards a depression, how are people going to cope? Do you have savings, do you have someone to move in with in case you loose your home, job?

A. I have a stable job in health care, so far untouched! (thank god) but i have a healthy chunk of savings that could last me at least a couple of years on a tight budget. My family would take me in, or I would find a cheap apartment. People needed to start saving years ago, and are now in a very tight spot. xx anna

A. Coping skills...so hard to define. But what they mean is you need to learn how to react to things, people and events that happen in your life in a positive manner. Say something negative happens to you as a child and you don't tell anyone about it. This negative memory stays with you and in the future when negative things happen to you...you may react by keeping them secret. Not a good coping mechanism. If you learn that by showing anger to someone you love that they leave you...you may always internalize your anger...instead of letting it out as a healthy reaction and emotion. Most often anger is justified and it is okay to express it, just not in a negative manner...and it is not good to let your anger rule your life and emotions. … [cont.]
