Is attending cosmetology school safe if I am or become pregnant?
Q. I am 22 years old and I am enrolling in cosmetology school in about a month and a half. My husband and I are also planning to have a baby in the next year or so. I have heard that it can cause adverse effects during pregnancy and I have also heard that it does not. Does anyone have any personal experience? Or good advice?

A. Quite a few jobs expose workers to teratogens, or chemical or physical agents that are harmful to a developing fetus. Health-care and laboratory jobs, hairdressing and cosmetology, housecleaning, laundry and dry cleaning, and factory work (including electronics, photography, textiles, and printing) may all expose you to potentially harmful chemicals or infectious agents. These substances can be inhaled, absorbed through the skin, or taken in by mouth. For most substances, there is an exposure level that will produce no detectable effect and a dose above which problems can occur. In some instances this "no effect" level of exposure is known; in others, it is not. In some cases, your exposure can be measured, such as when X-ray technicians… [cont.]

What is the difference between a Cosmetology Diploma vs Certificate from a community college?
Q. I'm applying to Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute, and they offer a program for both a Cosmetology Diploma (1500 Credit Hours) and a Cosmetology Certificate (1200 credit hours). I am assuming since its got more credit hours and thus I'd learn more from it, the Diploma is the way to go?

What are the disadvantages of not having a full Cosmetology License?
Q. I attended a full cosmetology school (hair, skin and nails) for 5 months then decided to drop class. I wasn't enjoying the skin and nail portion of school, however I am still interesting in hair. My ultimate goal is to someday have my own salon specializing in haircuts, color, pinch braid extensions, and dreadlocks. Is a full Cosmetology license necessary? Will I have trouble finding a job in a salon? Please answer only if you've HAD experience. Thank you.

What is the difference between a cosmetology degree and a license?
Q. I am getting ready to go to school for cosmetology I have the option of getting the degree or the license. Of course the degree is more work but would it really benefit me anymore?
Asked by Elliot T - Tue Apr 15 14:44:48 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Degree -- means you completed schooling and finished successfully (grades, ect. ect.) Licensed -- means you finished school and took your state board exam = which then means you can practice your skills in a salon and make a living off it! =)

Where can I get cosmetology posters for a new cosmetology classroom?
Q. I want to know where i can find free cosmetology posters if possible from companies like Paul Mitchell, TiGi, redken, sebastian, chi, loreal etc. I just need to find posters bad as my sisters classroom is empty, please any suggestions greatly appreciated, thanks!
Asked by jose g - Sat Aug 16 12:56:44 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Why don't you try writing to the companies? Visit their websites and look for a "Contact Us" link. Actually it would be better if your sister did it. She should explain that she's a cosmetology instructor and she's looking for any decorative materials for her classroom. They should be happy to help. If I were you, I would also check out any poster shop and look for posters of iconic women - e.g. Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, etc. or classy posters of more current celebrities.

Q. I am currently attending beauty school in Charlotte, NC. I was told I should try working in a hair salon while attending school. In order to gain more experience and knowledge. How easy is it to transer to another Cosmetology / Beauty school?
Q. I am planning of starting my cosmetology school in California, but in about 5 months or so i may move to another state [prbly Oregon or Georgia, not quite sure right now]. I was wondering how easy it is to transfer credits to another school usually? The reason i want to start now instead of waiting is because my Dad will pay if i go to this school, so it would help me TONS. Plus i have free rent and all.

A. Beauty school is not like college. Each state has it's own rules reguarding cosmetologist.(hours you must have before taking the state board test.) I'm a hairstylist in wisconsin if i go to anotheer state I might have to go back to school. It all depends on that state hours not credits. You should find out what the hours are for the state you're moving to first.

A. start by working for a chain salon that offers continued education classes from within. alot of salons have courses u take to maintain employment with them, u may not like or agree with all the information u get, but everything u learn in this field is useful. my instructor told me " never think u know everything, especially in this field, there is something new everyday to learn."

Are there any cosmetology programs during the summer in Arizona?
Q. It wouldn't be a problem to me if financial aid could be distributed to more than one institution, but since I'm a college student I need my financial aid more for my college tuition. So since I'm not taking any summer classes I was wondering if there was a summer cosmetology program in Tucson, AZ or in Arizona in general. Also, are there short term programs?
Asked by CLUELESS - Wed Apr 8 21:07:49 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Nope. Cosmetology is like college, except they go by hours. To even get your license, You have to complete the hours of your state, and your requirements.

How do I find out the statistics and which cosmetology school is better?
Q. I am trying to find out which cosmetology school is better. The Paul Mitchell School or the Aveda Institute. How do I know which school will be better for a lucrative career?
Asked by aip365 - Sun Jan 28 20:27:41 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Doesn't really matter. It depends on what you yourself can do, not what you duplicate. You can read books on styles, cuts and coloring later. The important things initially are that you pay the least amount possible for the basic training and study hard to pass your test. After that you can specialize. After passing the state board, some states you can just go and apply and then the shop owner trains you to what their shop is famous for. Or in some states you have to work under a cosmetology manager for a year before you can get your cosmetologist managing license. Then there are criteria you need to meet for renewing your license. If you are dead set on either school, why not go there, talk with the owner and they will show you… [cont.]

A. Hmm. I'd start it off by defining what it is. Use your dictionary. Then i'd go into depth about what it entails. Then its pros and cons like is it easy to get a job in this field etc. And finish it with reasons as to why you chose it.

A. ACE beauty supply. You will need your enrollment/ certificate to shop there. This is where all the professionals/shop owners go for their supplies. I had to have my certificate to shop there though. They have colored supplies, funky scissors, OPI, etc. All at whole sale cost.

is it possible to work at a hair salon without your cosmetology licenses?
Q. I am looking into going to cosmetology school. I need to save money first. I was wondering even though I dont have my licenses if I can still work in a salon. Like as a secretary, schedule appointments, check people out, sweep and clean. I figured working in a salon would be a great opportunity to learn things while goin to school. Is it possible?
Asked by cheer2007gurl - Thu May 8 17:33:54 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Absolutely! If you know a few people who work in salons you should ask if you could work there. I did it long time ago. I know a young girl now who washes our hair, put color in, blow dry, etc...So definitely start asking around. You may want to start with the owner or manager of the salon. Tell them about your ambitious and goals. I'm sure they will be willing to work something out. If one person says no, then don't give up - keep trying. Eventually some one will say yes.

A. If you have a California License, Then all you need is to go back to Cos. School and complete the hours. You can't do it online, Because you do need to teach class, and make up Curriculums and learn how to be a Instructor...Can't do all that online. Plus California may not even recongize Online classes.

How long does it take to get a cosmetology degree?
Q. I want to be a cosmetologist, but I'm really busy most of the time and I need to know how many years or months I need to set aside for my degree in cosmetology.
Asked by s s y s - Sat May 2 11:37:12 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends on your state. Cosmetology goes by hours, not years(Like Maine is 1500 hours.), and it's different for all states. It doesn't take any more then a year(If it does, It's a couple months over.), and sometimes less. It's a license by the way, not a degree.
