From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Crime is the breach of one or more rules or laws for which some governing authority, via mechanisms such as police power, may ultimately prescribe a conviction. While every crime violates the law, not every violation of the law counts as a crime; for example: breaches of contract and of other civil law may rank as "offences" or as "infractions". When informal relationships and sanctions are insufficient to establish and maintain a desired social order, there may be more formalized or stricter systems of social control imposed by a government, or by a sovereign state. With institutional and legal machinery at their disposal, agents of the State can compel populations to conform to codes, and can opt to punish or to attempt to reform those who do not conform. Authorities employ various mechanisms to regulate (encouraging or discouraging) certain behaviors in general. Governing or administering agencies may for example codify rules into laws, police people to ensure they comply with those laws, and implement other policies and practices designed to prevent crime. In addition, authorities provide remedies and sanctions, and collectively these constitute a criminal justice system. Legal sanctions vary widely in their severity, they may include (for example) incarceration of temporary character aimed at reforming the convict. Some jurisdictions have penal codes written to inflict permanent harsh punishments: legal mutilation, capital punishment or life without parole. The label of "crime" and the accompanying social stigma normally confine their scope to those activities seen as injurious to the general population or to the State, including some that cause serious loss or damage to individuals. Those who apply the labels of "crime" or "criminal" intend to assert the hegemony of a dominant population, or to reflect a consensus of condemnation for the identified behavior and to justify any punishments prescribed by the State (in the event that standard processing tries and convicts an accused person of a crime). Often a natural person perpetrates a crime, but legal persons may also commit crimes. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is harassment and when does it become a crime? Q. At what point does harassment become a crime? Is it a crime to follow someone home but not stop? It it a crime to call someone a few times wanting some information? When is it truly a crime? Asked by linniemouse - Wed Apr 1 15:58:11 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. tell them to stop, the moment they continue it is a crime. but you must first tell them to stop. following you home is stalking call the police and report it at once. that way you have an official police report to back you up. You may need to file a restraining order. once that order is violated then the police have a reason to do something about it. Good luck. If you are in doubt then call the local police department and explain the situation to them and ask for guidance as to how to proceed. Q. So many people are calling for Obama to send in the Navy to rescue the captured American captain which pirates are holding hostage in a foreign country's (Somalia) territorial waters. The Navy is part of the military charged with protecting our National Defense. Is the capturing of this captain the crime of kidnapping, or an act of war against the United States? If it's a crime, should the military be involved in law enforcement, particularly if the crime is committed in a foreign country? If it's an act of war, should the military get involved *every* time an American citizen is kidnapped/taken hostage in a foreign country? Asked by Griggnax - Sat Apr 11 00:58:20 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Usually you have to declare war. The U.S. hasn't done that since WW2. Pirates were a problem during Jefferson's time...there is no simple solution.
