How can my daughter attend a New York City public elementary school outside of his district?
Q. We are planning in buying a house in Kensington Brooklyn and I want to enroll her in a public elementary school. Unfortunately schools in the area lack cultural diversity with the entire student body consisting of African Americans. I want my daughter to be exposed to many not just one group of people. Is there a way that I can register my daughter in another school outside my district? Are there any legal precedents or can I register my daughter in the school district where I work or in the closest one to where we live?

How do I get my daughter to accept my boyfriend?
Q. My 13 year old daughter doesn;'t like my bf. I haven't really tried introducing both of them properly, but my daughter is adamant, she doesn't want anything to do with my bf and thinks he's a freak, etc, so when he visits, she decides she wants to stay with her dad. I can't bring myself up to start a conversation wtih her about my bf, because it would turn into a bicker. I love my daughter, but I really don't want to break up wtih my bf just because my daughter doesn't like him. My daughter doesn't know my bf. She calls him a freak, heck... she calls anyone whom she doesn't like (doesn't know) a freak.

A. this info is cut & paste from the mfrs website: 6. Failure to follow these instructions could result in severe harm. Once prepared, infant formula can spoil quickly. Either immediately feed or immediately cover and refrigerate at 35-40 F (2-4 C) for no longer than 24 hours. Do not use prepared formula if it is unrefrigerated for more than a total of 2 hours. Do not freeze prepared formula. After feeding begins, do not refrigerate feeding bottle. You must use within 1 hour or discard. 7. Store cans at room temperature. After opening can, keep tightly covered, store in dry area and use contents within 1 month. Do not freeze powder and avoid excessive heat. for complete info see their website:

If my daughter is going to be one in a week, can I start giving her milk?
Q. My daughter turns one on the 31st of this month. Is it okay to start giving her cows milk, along with her formula? Or could it harm her?

A. It's fine to start the transition now, if you haven' already done so. (It's not like something magic happens to baby's gut on the 366th day...)

Can my daughter stay at home for a few weeks before moving to a different school?
Q. My daughter is getting bullied and wants to move school. I am letting her but she wants to stay at home till the easter holidays (the schools break up on april 3rd) then go to her new school. Is this possible? It's only two weeks away? Thanks. She can get some work though. She already knows all the people in her year at that school because of a friend from primary school so she is fine on that, all I'm asking is would I be allowed by the government?
Asked by Boomtiing x3 - Thu Mar 19 09:30:23 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It shouldn't be a problem really. It'll be a good chance for her to get her mind straight. Usually if she's a new student the teacher would go easy on her and help her adjust to the class. She might be given extra homework or asked to stay behind after class to catch up on what she doesn't know. If they ask you at the office why she missed 2 weeks say something like "there was a family emergency", they'll back off and won't ask anything.

Can my daughter receive a refund if we claim her on our 1099?
Q. Our daughter graduated high school in '07. She started work in August of '07, so she received a W2. My husband gets a 1099 Misc & she does meet the criteria of qualifying child. Do we send one return including her info? Does she have to file a separate return? How do we file to have it work out for all of us? Also, can we e-file?
Asked by KayDee - Thu Mar 13 15:17:53 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Based on the information you gave there is no reason why you couldn't e-file. If your daughter qualifies as your dependent then you are the only ones eligible to claim her exemption. Your daughter would file her own (dependent)return if she is required to, but just not claim her own exemption. If she had withholding and her income was less than her standard deduction ($5350 for 2007), she should get a refund of all of her withholding.

What would you do if you caught your 13yrl daughter sneaking out?
Q. I had a funny feeling something was up we are on vacation in Twain Harte 3 girls my daughter 13, her bf i love 13 & a 14 yr old my daughter has gotten in trouble with prior. Do i tell the other parents? If i tell the bff they will never allow my daughter near their daughter and that breaks my heart. Who should i do?

A. If your daughter was vacationing with her bf's fam, would you want to be told if they sneaked out together? If you weren't told how would you feel? Kids will be kids. They push boundaries. That's part of growing up. As parents, it's our job to reinforce those boundaries. One way you can do that is by letting their parents know what happened. There are always consequences to actions like this. Your daughter might resent you for a while, but you can't let that dissuade you from doing the right thing. Be the parent. She already has friends.

How can I help my teen daughter who is a heroin junkie?
Q. My daughter have reached that age where everything seems awkward and I'm fully aware of that because I've once been a teenager too. I know everything seems to become a bit confusing for her but I was deeply disappointed when I found out that she was on heroin most of the time. It breaks my heart to see her every time she goes home stoned and wasted. It even came to a point that my wife and I questioned ourselves if we did something wrong to her as she was growing up. We really want to help her to be clean again. But what makes this all difficult is the fact that she is not aware that we know she's already a junkie. It's difficult to start a serious talk with her. Can anyone here give any suggestions on how we can help our beloved daughter? [cont.]

How can my daughter have her artwork accepted by calendar publishers?
Q. My daughter's artwork which comprises studies of nature for her GCSE art course is superb and top of her year. Can she submit her work to calendar publishers or manufacturers and how would she go about this?
Asked by marcoporres - Tue Dec 9 18:19:41 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. She can try ... they tend to only accept very commercially artists, I'm afraid, people who have already proven themselves. However, there's nothing stopping you from using software to create your own calendar, which you could print out and assemble and give to family and friends as very special personal gifts.

How can my daughter who lives in France cash in a cheque in Sterling?
Q. My daughter lives in France and has recently received a cheque in Sterling. She cannot pay it into her bank. Is there anyway she could endorse it and send it to me so that I could pay it into my bank for her when she eventually visits me?
Asked by BARRY B - Fri Jul 10 14:37:03 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You should be able to cash a sterling check in France at a bank at which she has an account, all be it at a cost. It would also take time. If the bank is refusing then she needs to insist. If she sends the cheque back to the sender would they transfer the money to a designated bank by a BACCS transfer? I had this done in France when my money was stolen when on holiday. It cost me and took about 5 days for the transfer to be completed.

How can my daughter get her hair professionally dyed at home?
Q. My daughter is getting her hair temporarily dyed. I said OK with that. But she wants it professional. It's probably the best way, but I don't want to go back everytime she washes her hair to redo it. So, I know you need to sit for 20 minutes with foil on it, but I'm not sure with the prep and all. It would be really good if you could help us. Thank you.

When can my daughter first start to use a spoon?
Q. My daughter is 15 months old next week and has recently started wanting to feed herself with her spoon. Although she lacks most of the fine motor skills to perfect the art of feeding herself can she learn to at this age?
Asked by bob - Sat May 20 13:27:15 2006 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Let her try. It'll be messy, but fun. I always fed my kids with two spoons, one for them to play with and one for me to feed them with. They figured it out on their own. For the most part they just poked themselves in the eye with it at first, but then when they got it in their mouths we had a reason to cheer and dance around. They didn't go blind either, dispite all the cereal I had to wash out of their eyes. Those were the days... before they came and looked disgustedly at dinner and declared they'd make themselves something... but I digress. You'll want to strip her down to her diaper first for easy cleanup.

A. Has your daughter taken acting lessons? If not, she is NOT ready for a Talent Agent. Talent Agents represent actors with acting experience. Has your daughter perfomed in plays, in theaters in your city? Where did she study acting, which University, which acting school. How many were lead roles, did she have in the plays, in which she performed? It takes years of studying acting before she will be ready to get a Talent Agent, be patient.

A. Keep your kids away from the neighbor, daughter, and cousin. You also might want to report the cat killing--I don't think much would be done to 5 year olds, but maybe a visit from the cops would keep it from escalating.

What causes my daughter to have big poop and causing her pain when she has to go?
Q. My 15 month old daughter have hard stool all the time. It's pebbles like ever sinced she switched to whole milk. Anways there are times that she has big logs that I have to help her get it out. What causes this? I am feeding her lots of fruits and vegetables.

A. Fruit and vegetables are very healthy foods for the daily diet, but in moderation.Fruit and vegetables provide us with vitamins and fibre and other health benefits. If you have too much fibre you can actually become clogged/constipated. I would suggest that your daughter has no more than 2 - 3 pieces of fruit a day and only 2 cups of cooked mixed vegetables a day. Try and limit how much fruit juice you give her also, just think about how many pieces of fruit are required to make the juice for one cup of drink...heaps. Try and get your daughter to drink at least three cups of water a day. Drinking water is an excellent way to help soften her poos and make it easier to be eliminated from her body.

What can my daughter do to fix a hair color disaster?
Q. My daughter went today to get her hair colored. She picked a really nice brown color, but when it was done, it almost looks like black. She hates it. It cost her $65.00. Is there anyway to make it lighter without damaging her hair more?

A. It will lighten. It always looks darker at first, plus it may be a shock if she was another color. If she really hates it after a couple of days, go back to the stylist and have her/him correct it. Don't try it yourself.

What age was your daughter when you first let her wear makeup?
Q. My older daughter is 14 (younger is 9) and the older one wants to wear makeup. She is in 9th grade (high school). I am not comfortable with this idea at all because I think she is naturally beautiful. Once she wore makeup to a school football game and I noticed and flipped out on her and she stormed away. What should I do? Should I allow her to wear some? I let her wear lip gloss, but she wants to wear some mascara. Thanks so much.

A. It's not that big of a deal. I started wearing it on a daily basis when I was 13 years old. And besides - mascara is just on your eyelashes, what's the big deal about that? You act like she's caking her face with makeup.

How would my teenage daughter pay income taxes for money from her website?
Q. My 15 year-old daughter owns a website and she gets an income from Google Ads and an online store. What is the best way for her to pay her taxes? Should we join it with our family taxes or separate the two? The website if registered under my name but the online store is under hers. Thank you!

A. If you go to a tax preparer to do your taxes, he/she may not want to (or be able to) do taxes for a small business. That was the trouble I had. So you have to find a different preparer. Also since it's not wage income, there is no withholding, so you have to make quarterly payments with a 1040-ES (Estimated Tax) form. You can get these forms at the IRS web site. The formula for figuring out what you owe is complicated, so I just send in 1/5 of my income, and I usually get a refund at the end of the year. Your state may also require quarterly estimated withholding.
