In linguistics, declension is the occurrence of inflection in nouns, pronouns and adjectives, indicating such features as number (typically singular vs. plural), case (subject, object, and so on), gender, and possession. Declension occurs in a great many of the world's languages, and features very prominently in many European languages, but is much less prominent in English. English nouns decline only to distinguish singular from plural (e.g., book vs. books); only very few English adjectives decline (the French loan-word blond(e) being a rare exception), and only a few English pronouns show vestiges of case-triggered declension (e.g., nominative case he, dative case or accusative case him, genitive case (possessive case) his). As detailed below, English was once a highly inflected language, as befitting its Indo-European and especially its Germanic linguistic ancestry, but it became greatly simplified as it evolved. Q. I'm really confused about Latin fourth and fifth declension nouns along with ablative absolutes. Can someone give me example sentences using both of those? Nothing fancy, just something someone would say to someone else. Basic sentences are perfect, I just need some examples to read. Asked by Angel Y - Sun Mar 22 16:28:39 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well you could maybe say "Hand fast, he grabs the bread" Hand fast is the absolute ablative phrase. You would probably translate the sentence as "Manu celer, panem capat." For a fifth declension like day you can say "With the day ahead, he plans the plans" with "with the day ahead being ablative phrase so "Cum die ante, consilia cogitat" Answered by |misz.exclusive| - Sun Mar 22 16:39:03 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "declension" Tripping the light fantastic
