In grammatical theory, definiteness is a feature of noun phrases, distinguishing between entities which are specific and identifiable in a given context (definite noun phrases) and entities which are not (indefinite noun phrases). There is considerable variation in the expression of definiteness across languages: some languages use a definite article (which can be a free form, a phrasal clitic, or an affix on the noun) to mark a definite noun phrase. Examples are:
Germanic, Romance, Celtic, Semitic, and auxiliary languages generally have a definite article, sometimes used as a postposition. Many other languages do not. Some examples are Chinese, Japanese, Finnish, and the Slavic languages except Bulgarian and Macedonian. When necessary, languages of this kind may indicate definiteness by other means such as Demonstratives. It is common for definiteness to interact with the marking of case in certain syntactic contexts. In many languages direct objects (DOs) receive distinctive marking only if they are definite. For example in Turkish, the DO in the sentence adamları gördüm (meaning "I saw the men") is marked with the suffix -ı (indicating definiteness). The absence of the suffix means that the DO is indefinite ("I saw men"). In Serbo-Croatian, and to a lesser extent in Slovene, definiteness can be expressed morphologically on prenominal adjectives. The short form of the adjective is interpreted as indefinite (nov grad "a new city"), while the long form is definite and/or specific (novi grad "the new city, a certain new city"). In Japanese, a language which indicates noun functions with postpositions, the topic marker (wa) may include definiteness. For example, 馬は (uma wa) can mean "the horse", while 馬が (uma ga) can mean "a horse". In some languages, the definiteness of the object affects the transitivity of the verb. In the absence of peculiar specificity marking, it also tends to affect the telicity of monooccasional predications. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Are there any? As far as what to say or not say around a pregnant woman or questions to ask her? Asked by Sandy - Fri Jan 9 16:22:09 2009 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments A. Here's my top four: Rule #1 - Don't say anything that implies she's fat or waddles. That means it's not ok to say "Look how big you are." (One stupid b*$%! told me my cheeks were getting fat like I was supposed to be excited about that.) #2 Just don't comment on her apperance at all, unless maybe you like her shirt or something. It's not really a compliment to say "You're so small." She doesn't want to hear your, a non-medical professional's, opnion on how she should be. #3 Ask before you touch! She is not a petting zoo. #4 Talk to her about things other than her pregnancy. Q. My friends were recently told by their biology teacher that males generate more heat than females. I've tested it by grabbing my guy-friends' hands versus my girl-friend's hands, and it appears to be true! Why is this? Asked by Taylor - Wed Jan 14 18:08:35 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't know if that's a true scientific observation, but I've noticed it too. This might be why: Muscle tissue generates heat even when you are at rest. Females naturally have a higher proportion of body fat than males, and correspondingly have a lower proportion of muscle mass than males (obviously, athletic females will have more muscle mass than flabby or skinny males, but for two similarly-sized people, these rules apply). The males, with their extra muscle mass, could generate more heat than a similarly-sized female. Answered by Natural - Wed Jan 14 18:29:51 2009 What is the definite definition of a commercial and a theatrical actor?
Q. I thought that a commercial actor was an actor who did film and television and that a theatrical actor did, well, theater. I read different things on this and so now I'm confused. I thought I knew, as stated above but from what I've been reading lately... I don't know. Thanks all! : ) Asked by Iamready! - Mon Jun 25 02:19:07 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. In La Industry - Speak, "Theatrical" means someone who does films and television. Commercial is someone who does commercials. Many actors in LA who have never been in the theater have both theatrical and commercial agents. Answered by Elizabeth - Mon Jul 2 10:21:36 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "definite" |
