How are place deposits related to the transport of sediments?
Q. Also what characterists of gold cause it to collect in place deposits?
Asked by elocin0419 - Mon Dec 3 18:18:26 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Placer deposits are generally found in streams where the running water has concentrated the heavier sediments(such as gold). Deposits like this will collect in areas where the velocity of the water is high enough to transport the lighter materials(such as silt), but not high enough to transport heavier materials(such as gold, gem stones, or sand grains composed of the heavier oxides). Places like this would be bars on the inside of meanders, the plunge pools under a waterfall, and depressions on a stream bed.

How do you take off calcium deposits from a glass fish tank?
Q. We have a 125 gallon glass fish tank and cannot get the calcium deposits off. We have used vinegar and used razors but it still has a cloudy look. Is there anything else that we can use. I know everyone else has said not to use CLR or any chemicals but I don't know what else to use.

A. with a scourer, water and elbow greese. it will talke a while but it will work. dont use steel wool. a general green scourer will do the trick, buy a new one so it doesnt have chemicals on it. ive worked in a pet store with lots of fishtanks for 8 years now. iv also had multiple fishtanks my whole life. this is the only method i have used and it works fine for me. u mite have to have a few goes at it. once its gone if you do it regularly you wont get the build up again. you can safely use this method while the tank is still in use, it will not hurt your fish. we use the same scourers to clean the algae off too.

I have calcium deposits in the main water line coming from our well to the house How can I flush the line out?
Q. We use well water. Recently our pressure tank quit working and we had to replace it. Now we have calcium deposits in the main water line coming into the house. This calcium is clogging up our cold water line and the faucets in the house do not work good. The hot water comes into the house really good, but we are concerned that we are getting large deposits of calcium in our hot water heater. What can I do to resolve this problem?
Asked by Dolly Beth - Wed Jul 11 17:43:04 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You could install a filter at the pressure tank but you'll have to change the filter out at least once every three months maybe sooner, maybe longer depending on what type of filter you install. The better solution is, of course, more costly but definitely better. Install a water softner by your pressure tank. This will take care of much of your problem but I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself. Good luck!

What can I do about the calcium deposits in my lower back, hips and shoulders?
Q. I have calcium deposits in my lower back, especially just above my hips and around my spine. I also have them on the sides and front of my hips and on the back and front of my shoulders. How can I get rid of them? They are painful and irritating.
Asked by Samantha - Sat Feb 2 14:09:10 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Something to consider: if you are or have been taking a calcium supplement that is not by New Chapter or liquid (which could still pose a problem) it can actually cause calcification. What your body can't absorb deposits in the bnody. New Chapter has a calcium that is from an algae source and one that is fermented and cultured, so the body recognizes it as food. Most calcium supplements are limestone, not something human beings would eat!

What gets rid of the redish/orange deposits that water leaves in the tub?
Q. I get the redish orange mineral deposits (I think that's what they are) in my bath tub and on my dish drying rack underneath where the water collects. I can't quite get the ones in the tub off because they are on the caulking on the inside of the tub. I sprayed it with lysol hoping to kill whatever it is, but it comes back! HELP!

A. It sounds like what you are seeing is essentially liquid rust. Try CLR - it worked for me. You can find it at Walmart, your grocery store or drug store (like CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens) with the cleaning products.

A. Whenever you have citrus fruits, chop up the peel and scatter it around the bark. The orange and yellow colours fade quickly but the smell remains and cats hate citrus.

How to remove stuck-on burnt stains and mineral deposits from enamel pots?
Q. Tap water mineral deposits. I've tried scraping it repeatedly with a spoon and wet paper towels, but they don't remove it all. I boiled saltwater in the pot, hoping the resulting salt cake will stick to the stains, but the bubbling prevents effective surface adhesion. Anybody got a better way?

A. I have found that the best way to clean any type of pot or pan with these problems is to sprinkle kosher salt and either white vinegar or lemon juice and a little bit of dish liquid and scrub with a nylon(non-abrasive) brillo pad. I have found Trader Joe's to have the best ones. If this does not work for you the alternative is to use a cleaner like Bon Ami or Bar Keeper's Friend with the nylon scrubber, because both are a non-abrasive powder cleansers.

How do I clean out my shower head of mineral deposits so it will spray at it's original strength?
Q. This shower head is only a year old and it sprays half as strong as it did new. There is build up of mineral deposits from the water and i think that it is responsible for the lack of pressure. When you take the head off the water blasts out of the hose...put the shower head on...it does little more than drizzle out. Is there something i can soak it in to eat away at the built up or should i just buy a new one?
Asked by heh2203 - Fri Mar 21 12:38:59 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Use CLR. It has an adjustable nozzle on it where it sprays out as a foam, so it sticks to vertical surfaces for a while. Get the face of the shower head well covered in the foam and let it sit for about 15 minutes. then try the shower again. If that doesn't unclog the holes, remove the showerhead and set it face down in a about 1/4 inch of liquid CLR (pour it from the bottle into a bowl or something). You can also pour about 1/4 cup of liquid directly into the shower head. Let this sit for a half hour, then rinse it out and reinstall it. It should be clear then.

Why do I have salt deposits on my dishes from my water softener?
Q. Every time we run our dishes through the dishwasher they come out looking like they didn't get rinsed very well. Some friends told us that our water softener isn't working correctly. I've also noticed deposits in the tray below our water and ice dispenser in our refrigerator. Is there an easy fix for this problem that a Do It Yourselfer can handle? Or do I need to have a professional come out and maintenance it?

A. We have that too, it's lime. Basically, you can get an expensive softener for your water. That's about all we have found. We have tried the dishwasher cleaner things, they work for a load or two and stink up the kitchen. Heavy lime in the water will screw up your plumbing, it sucks, but sadly there is no other way around it that a softener to pull the lime out. (My cobalt glasses look like poo when I put them in the dishwasher, I've started just washing them by hand)

Is it safe to have Bank fixed deposits during a recession? Is the money safe?
Q. Today's headlines in the news paper says that the world has entered the recession phase of the economy. In this stage how safe are the bank fixed deposits?

A. deposits are fine. in the US, right now your bank account is automatically insured up to $250k by the FDIC (read: US government). if you have more than that in one bank, it might be worth spreading it around to other banks, so you can say that you're never over the 250k cap at any one bank. basically, you'll be fine, no matter what. if the FDIC has to take over one of your banks, the only change that you'll notice is a new paper sign on the door. your money is perfectly safe, so long as you only bank at FDIC insured institutions.

In what year did banks start having to report large deposits?
Q. I am preparing to write a novel about time-travel which involves someone stealing money in, say, August 1961. They then go back to July 1961 (before the money was stolen) to deposit it in a bank account and I wondered if, at that time, did banks have to report any large deposits.
