What is the difference between ordinal data and interval data?
Q. The book says that ordinal can be used to rank or order individuals or groups, but it can NOT be used to determine how much of a difference exists between individuals. It gives the examples of percentile rankings on standardized tests and place finishes in a race. I don't understand why these numbers can not be used to determine the difference between individuals. Isn't the percentile ranking and place finish in a race used exactly for the purpose of comparing one performance against another? If someone finished 3rd in a race, and someone else finished 8th, the difference in their places is 5. It says you CAN use interval numbers to determine differences between individuals based on some trait or characteristic. Interval numbers are… [cont.]

A. Ordinal data just tells you the order of something. i.e. think of a 100m race. 1st place might take 10 secs, 2nd might be 10.5 secs and 3rd could be 11.09 secs. The interval times between them are not fixed. Ordinal data just provides the position of where they came. Interval data provides information which is more quantative. On the temperature scale you mention, 10 degrees Farenheit and say 11 degrees Farenheit - the difference is 1 degree... the interval between each is the same - the scale is uniform!! Ordinal - scale not uniform Interval - scale is uniform

What is the difference between Asians in Hawaii and those on the mainland USA?
Q. Is there a difference between Asians (in general) on the mainland and those in Hawaii? Such as a dress difference, attitude difference, even physical difference, etc. And while we're on the subject, would anybody like to pinpoint exactly what they believe the difference is among Asians in Asia, Hawaii, and mainland USA?
Asked by Kiryuu - Thu Apr 24 04:50:56 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. This is a very interesting question...but its a hard one to answer. This is like asking what is the difference between Caucasians living in England vs the US mainland vs Hawaii. There's really no real answers to this. I, being an Asian who lived in Asia, on the US Mainland AND Hawaii, I can give you some general ideas. First of all, there is a difference in attitude and dress no matter what ethic group you are. People in Hawaii tend to dress more casually and are more laid back than most people on the mainland USA. US is a very very diverse country, people from the east coast will dress differently than the west coasts/south/north. As to the comparison with Asia...that is just WAYYY too general...I guess the only thing I can say… [cont.]

Q. Is the difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien is comparable to the difference between a houseguest and a burglar ?

A. I would describe the illegal more as a tick. they latch on and suck the life blood out of the US by breeding at incredible rates. The legal immigrant at least filed papers and has some education and skills.

What is the philosophical difference between a child obeying primal instincts and an act of evil?
Q. A baby is wholly self-indulgent, a criminal is wholly self-indulgent. Ignoring differences of age and experience, what is the philosophical difference between the two? If you have trouble ignoring said differences, here is a different framing of the question: A man in a novel is depicted in one respect as evil, taking advantage of others and thereby stealing from them, while, in another, he is shown to be pathetic and frail, with an unorganized and undeveloped sense of self, engaging in what in the other respect is considered "evil" simply as a method of self-indulgence. What is the *philosophical* difference between the two?
Asked by topherblah - Sat Feb 14 09:22:05 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The difference,in ethics as in law, is one of intention and autonomy. Evil requires knowledge in advance of likely consequences, and the choice to do otherwise. Children have neither.

A. For starters, wedding dresses are worn to weddings, and are generally more expensive, fancier, nicer, and white or creme. Prom dresses are not as expensive, worn to proms, and based more towards teens, so they are usually in brighter colors and come in sexier styles.

What s the difference between good fats and bad fats?
Q. What s the difference between good fats and bad fats? I thought there was no difference. But what exactly is the difference? And what foods have good fats?
Asked by Citiscloset - Thu Apr 24 12:30:37 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The "good fats" are simply the unsaturated fats, found in foods like fish, sunflower oil, fish oil, etc. The "bad fats" are the saturated fats, found in various oils, as well as trans fats, found in most commercially supplied, packaged foods (like fast food). I placed the quotations around the good and bad fat to isolate the colloquial meaning of them, both types of fats can be both good and bad.

What difference does it make where the pipe enters the muffler in an exhaust system?
Q. I want to make my small block V-8 loud. I am thinking about some Flowmaster Super 40's. My problem is that I don't know if it makes a difference when the exhaust pipe enters the middle or on either sides, and whether it goes out the middle or either sides. Does it make a difference?
Asked by Matt R - Mon Feb 16 18:50:01 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. doesn't make a difference. they have the different set ups for certain pipes and certain cars. some cars have the muffler situated so the exhaust pipe can only enter the far side of the muffler. others have enough room for the pipe to go down the middle. all depends ps. try magnaflow instead of flowmasters. they sound good but rob your horsepower

What is the difference between Irish Whiskey and Scottish Whisky?
Q. I have got my dad a bottle of Irish Whiskey for a birthday present, I don't drink any alcohol myself so I have no idea what the difference is between Scottish Whisky and Irish Whiskey is? Is there a taste difference? Why does one spell it with an "e" and one without? Who made it first? Who makes the best one? What does it mean about the distilling process? How do you know which is a good one? Why is there a 10 difference between two bottles of Whiskey? Are the most expensive ones better or not?
Asked by Angel Barbie - Sun Mar 23 08:14:24 2008 - - 12 Answers - 3 Comments

A. Whiskey as it is spelt in Ireland or whisky in Scotland is the most popular of all the grain spirits, first thought to be distilled by monks in Ireland as early as the 12th century. But it was in 1608 when Bushmills distillery first received its grant. Even up until Victorian times Irish whiskey was more popular than Scotch. The difference between Irish whiskey and Scotch whiskies The big difference between Scotch and Irish whiskey is the distilling phase which is made twice with Scotch and three times with Irish, giving Irish whiskey a particular lightness Scotch whisky first allows the barley to sprout and then it is dried. Irish whiskey uses raw and malted barley while Scotch is entirely malted barley. (This is partly because… [cont.]

What is the difference between full sized digital cameras and pocket size?
Q. I know the size is different. Is there a difference in profarmance. Assuming the the cameras have the same (Megapixals, zoom, and have the same features what is the difference in picture quality? Is there a difference in lenses, as far as quality?. Can you get as much in your picture with a small camera as a large?
Asked by Jim O - Sat Aug 19 14:22:30 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. With small models you get 3x or 5x zoom, tops. With bigger ones you get up to 12x zoom, where the wide end is the same but you can zoom in much, much more. The larger models are generally also equipped with better lenses, which translates into better looking prints. Other features can be identical. (Larger models often have a lot of bells and whistles, but so do many compact cameras.) Digital SLR cameras are the best in terms of lenses (sold separately), and they offer much better responsiveness, better low light performance, and a bunch of other advantages.

What is the difference between care and pity?
Q. The problem with this question is that there is no freely available solid information on the difference between the two words (I suppose one could relate this to defining love). Even so, when certain things happen in life, one begins to realize that there are times when on comprehends there is a difference between the two words. Such a thing had recently happened to me. Also, people constantly have the tendency to mix pity with care. I wish only for a clear explanation for this specific question--What is the difference between care and pity? Please and Thank You!
Asked by Cookie - Mon May 18 17:29:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Pity is often condescending while care is closer to experiencing empathy. That means a person who cares actually feels with the person and does something about the distress as well. When a person experiences pity he/she looks at the person's problem as external to himself and that it's not his/her problem.

Can somebody tell me the difference between Yams and Sweet potatoes?
Q. I have always made candied yams with yams? But since I have relocated from the North to the South, no one seems to know the difference? I'm surprised that southern folk cant tell the difference. The problem I'm having is that the stores down here wont label yams as yams because they feel there is no difference between a yam and a sweet potato; but when I ask specifically for "yams only", they are confused and they give me sweet potatoes! I know there has to be a way to tell the difference between the two. I need my yams for thanksgiving!

A. Actually the plants are quite different. We may use the terms interchangeably, but they are really quite different. What we find in supermarkets and in cans are sweet potatoes, no matter how they are labeled. Sweet Potatoes are orange tubers with elongated with ends that taper to a point and are of two dominant types. The paler-skinned sweet potato has a thin, light yellow skin with pale yellow flesh which is not sweet and has a dry, crumbly texture similar to a white baking potato. The darker-skinned variety (which is most often called "yam" in error) has a thicker, dark orange to reddish skin with a vivid orange, sweet flesh and a moist texture. The true yam is the tuber of a tropical vine (Dioscorea batatas) and is not even… [cont.]

What is the difference between a wabbit and a rabbit?
Q. I have always wondered what the difference is between a "wabbit" and a "rabbit". A few days ago I saw a small child point at an animal in a pet shop and call it "wabbit", even though the cage said "Netherland Dwarf", which until then I had thought was a "rabbit", not "wabbit". Is a "wabbit" a relative of a "rabbit"? I kept looking at the Netherland Dwarf for maybe an hour trying to figure out the difference between it and the rabbit next to it, but to no avail. Someone please help and tell me what the difference between these species are. Thanks.

Whats the difference between these milk types ?
Q. 1 - ultra heat treated, available at room temperature on supermarket shelves and are cheaper, with longer expiry 2 - slightly more expensive, with quicker expiry, available in the refrigerated section in the supermarket, but this one does not say it is ultra heat treated on the ingredients Whats the difference ? why one more expensive ? anything to do with quality and nutrients and freshness etc ? TThe 2 I am comparing are both from the same company and are the same milk as on the label. the only differences I can see are what i mentioned above. thanks.

A. The first is mast product. The milk will have a longer expire time, maybe months. The ultra heat treated may change some nutrition content of the milk. The second is more natural and fresh. The milk will expire just within some days. That's why it is more expensive.
