From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Distance is a numerical description of how far apart objects are. In physics or everyday discussion, distance may refer to a physical length, a period of time, or an estimation based on other criteria (e.g. "two counties over"). In mathematics, a distance function or metric is a generalization of the concept of physical distance. A metric is a function that behaves according to a specific set of rules, and provides a concrete way of describing what it means for elements of some space to be "close to" or "far away from" each other. In most cases, "distance from A to B" is interchangeable with "distance between B and A". MathematicsSee also: Metric (mathematics)From Wikipedia under the

Q. If the strong nuclear force is carried by virtual fermions, they ought to be limited in range by the uncertainty principle. Can anybody calculate the maximum distance and tell me whether the decrease in strength with distance is abrupt at the end, or follows an inverse-square law, or whether some other kind of trailing off happens? Asked by David S - Fri Aug 11 10:42:38 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The strong nuclear force is not mediated by fermions - it is mediated by gluons, which are gauge vector bosons. Gluons mediate the strong attraction between quarks. Quarks make up the nucleons that make up nuclei. Quarks have colour charge, as do gluons themselves. There are three types of colour charge. Hence as quarks exchange gluons they change colour charge accoriding to strict rules. This means there are actually 8 types of gluon. The force between nucleons (between protons and neutrons) is a residual strong force, caused because the echange of gluons between quarks is not symmetric (its like the polarity of the water molecule caused by the distribution of charge, even though the molecule is neutral). The strong nuclear force is… [cont.] Answered by epidavros - Fri Aug 11 12:27:19 2006 How would the distance a book slides be solved with energy conservation? Q. A book of 7.3kg slides down an inclined board of 43.2 degrees at an initial velocity of 2.88m/s. It the friction coefficient between the block and hill is 0.62., what is the distance the book slides down the hill? Asked by Mikio7 - Wed Feb 27 22:48:28 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The book has an initial kinetic energy. Moving against friction does work which transfers energy (heat) to the hill. When the kinetic energy is used up the book stops. Q. I just bought an LG home theatre surrounding system... In the audio set up for the speakers there's Volume and Distance... Ok, the volume is obvious, to raise the volume of the speaker i want...But i didn't understand what is meant by distance... Now the distance for each speaker is 0 metre but i can raise it til 5 metres... So what is meant by Distance? What does it do to the sound? Please give me specific details... Appreciate it!
