The dog (Canis lupus familiaris, pronounced /ˈkeɪ.nis ˈluːpəs fʌˈmɪliɛəris/, nicknamed: Man's Best Friend) is a domesticated subspecies of the Gray Wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The term is used for both feral and pet varieties. The domestic dog has been one of the most widely kept working and companion animals in human history. Amongst canine enthusiasts, the word "dog" may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "bitch."

The dog quickly became ubiquitous across culture in all parts of the world, and was extremely valuable to early human settlements. For instance, it is believed that the successful emigration across the Bering Strait might not have been possible without sled dogs. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, protection, and, more recently, assisting handicapped individuals. Currently, there are estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.

Over the 15,000 year span that the dog had been domesticated, it diverged into only a handful of landraces, groups of similar animals whose morphology and behavior have been shaped by environmental factors and functional roles. As the modern understanding of genetics developed, humans began to intentionally breed dogs for a wide range of specific traits. Through this process, the dog has developed into hundreds of varied breeds, and shows more behavioral and morphological variation than any other land mammal. For example, height measured to the withers ranges from a few inches in the Chihuahua to a few feet in the Irish Wolfhound; color varies from white through grays (usually called "blue'") to black, and browns from light (tan) to dark ("red" or "chocolate") in a wide variation of patterns; coats can be short or long, coarse-haired to wool-like, straight, curly, or smooth. It is common for most breeds to shed this coat, but non-shedding breeds are also popular.

How does a dogs social structure work as a pet within a standard human family?
Q. I was lead to believe that most dogs view the humans their most commonly around in much the same way as they'd view other dogs they'd be around in the wild, kind of like a pack. What position within that pack does the family dog give view itself? Does it consider itself to be a member of the pack (family), or does the dog view the family as being members of the dogs pack, and thus the dog views itself as the leader?

A. That is an excellent question. Dogs view things differently then we do and there is much speculation about the question you just asked as to how a dog finds his place in a pack, albeit an artificial one since we, humans are not dogs. In a dog's world things are black and white simplicity wise. Everything a dog does stems from pack drive, the fundamental force behind a dog's existence. In the so called civilized society of ours, we have brought the dog in our home, but, to that dog, we are still his pack and he still wants to belong and find his rightful place within it. That is where things get confusing. Most people have no idea what pack drive is, most people refuse to view a dog for what he really is, a dog, and confuse it and… [cont.]

How to train my dog not to be aggressive with other dogs?
Q. I have a dog (8ball) he is a retriever mix and about 10 months old. I have been trying to walk him but every time we run into a dog he tries to attack. I turn around and try to go the opposite way but he just pulls and growls. I really want to be able to take him to the dog park and let him play with other dogs and play fetch at the park instead of our small backyard. What can i do to train him to be more friendly with other dogs. P.S. I dont want to get a personal trainer. It costs too much money.

A. i recently got a different type of head collar for my dog...it's called a "gentle leader". i got it from my vet's office. it doesn't muzzle my dog, but rather when she tries put pull and i give a little tug her head will go to the side, since she wants to look straight ahead she stops pulling. immediately tell her "good girl, good girl" and give her a treat. then we moved on to if i/ we knew a house w/ a dog or person walking was coming i would could actually get her to sit for a minute, praise, praise, praise, calming pets, and when she was settled down we would continue and when we past the situation i would praise her more and give her a treat...had to do the same with passing cars (she would l go bananas jumping at them...1st we worked on… [cont.]

The dog is a mammal in the order Carnivora. Dogs were first domesticated from wolves at least 17,000 years ago, but perhaps as early as 150,000 years ago based upon recent genetic fossil and DNA evidence. In this time, the dog has developed into hundreds of breeds with a great degree of variation.

A dog will look at you as if to say, “What do you want me to do for you? I’ll do anything for you.” Whether a dog can in fact, do anything for you if you don’t have sheep (I never have) is another matter. The dog is willing.
