What is the best way to portray Dorothy Gale in a middle school musical?
Q. I've been cast in the role of Dorothy for my middle school's production of The Wizard of Oz, and I'm afraid of becoming a Judy Garland clone with my acting. I want it to feel real to the audience. I don't want to copy everything she did. Any tips would be welcome.

A. Playing Dorothy is so much fun! I think my favorite part is meeting kids afterwards to really believe you are the real thing. You'll pose like Mickey Mouse at Disney World! Depending on the script you have, the role can be challenging. My school (in 2002) had a script that I called "The Wizard of Oz on crack" b/c Dorothy was all whiny and left in a rocket ship! It was a mix of the book, the movie, and an author who had to have been smoking something. I had to stick to the lines as the whiny Dorothy, but keep the Dorothy every one loves at the same time. The worst part of the show, though, is the munchkinland sequence. It is so so long! You can't sing along because they're singing to you. You just stand there and smile and look… [cont.]

Q. Everything I can find about Dorothy Thorpe is all about etching glass. I have a Venus statue that is about two feet high, and appears to possibly be a very dense, heavy resin that has some faint color inside the body. It has a sticker on the bottom that is very worn out, but under magnification it says, "Dorothy C Thorpe Inc. Does anyone know what Ms. Thorpe had to do with art reproduction?

Q. so i have the yoyojam hitman (wide gapped) with the stock bearing and i love it. but i was wondering if the dorothy bearing was really worth it, or if i should just go for a ceramic one. Which one is a better deal for the price

A. Unfortunately, the Dorothy bearing has been discontinued by Yoyofactory. It has been replaced by the SPEC bearing. Although a more expensive bearing has a slight difference, it really all depends on the skill level of the player. If you are just starting, you will probably not feel the difference. Bearings wise, I'd go with the Dif-e-yo KonKave bearing. It centers the string and is personally my favorite bearing. Ceramics, in my opinion, are not worth the steep price tag unless you have lots to spend on yoyo accessories. Hope that helped!
