What is the difference between eating raw veggies and eating steamed or cooked veggies?
Q. Do the nutrient or mineral levels go down when you cook them? Is eating cooked veggies pretty much equivalent to eating raw veggies? I am bringing this up because it seems like all the nutritionists I see on tv say to eat raw veggies but they don't explain why you can't cook or steam them...I don't even hear them say you can't but if they didn't want you to cook them then they wouldn't bother saying "Eat raw veggies" and would just say "Eat veggies". Any thoughts?

A. The problem with cooking (in water) is that much of the nutrients leach into the water which is almost always thrown out. Along with this, many vitamins are destroyed by heat. Steaming is better for you because not as many nutrients are lost, but the heat still destroys some of the vitamins. This usually doesn't effect minerals though. With raw vegetables you get all the nutrients. However, as was already mentioned, the important thing is to get plenty of vegetables in your diet. If eating them cooked helps you eat more, then go for it.

If i stop eating a certain food then start eating it again could i develope an alergy for it?
Q. Could i start being alergic to a certain food if i stop eating it for a long time then start eating it again? What if it was for less then a year that i stoped eating the food?
Asked by *Missy Doo* - Sun Apr 13 10:50:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Technically, you can develop an allergy to a food at any time, no matter how long you've been without it. No matter if you have not eaten it for 1 year, or 1 day. You are safe to eat whatever food you are worried about eating. I'd say your chances are really really low of 'all of the sudden' having an allergy to a food. Could happen, but not likely.

What kind of eating disorder is someone drinking beverages more than eating food?
Q. Well, my friend has been drinking beverages more than eating today. I mean, today, she only ate three spoons of noodles and a slice of pizza, and she is full the whole day. But she drinks more frequently than she eats that she could still finish a whole bottle of milk in one sitting! Is this a disorder? What is wrong?

A. Well, I have an eating disorder and everyone I know who is anorexic would NEVER eat an entire slice of pizza or noodles voluntarily. Maybe she's developing an eating disorder though, because people tend to start out just lessening their diets and then work there way down to less and less food. And some of us go on certain diets, like juice diets and stuff. Check what she's drinking. If it's got calories in it it's probably not an eating disorder because she's obviosusly not counting calories. And if she's drinking milk, that has crazy calories in it, so it's probably not an eating disorder. Nevertheless, I would talk to her about it, just in case. Just let her know that you're there and want her to be healthy. Even though she doesn't… [cont.]

How do you get a six pack without eating like a bird or a squirrel?
Q. I want to eat damn it. I don't like eating like those men's fitness magazines where they tell you eat 2 spoons of raisins, 1 slice of wheat bread, and 2 spoons of nuts, and a 1/4 glass of orange juice for breakfast. Man, screw that I want to be able to eat like a human not a bird or a squirrel. Somebody give me advice on eating what you want to eat and still having that six pack. I'll hit the gym hard to make up for what I eat is it possible?

A. Even natural fruit juice can give you a hypoglycemic reaction... even if it does not have added stuff. Try to space out you fruit in general... the higher gi means faster fule and faster burn off... bad news. If you don't like fruit, don't sweat it for the next month... but try to work them into your diet slowly... they are important. Lay off the juice- it really doesn't benifit you in your quest for a slimmer you.

When you put them to bed if they sleep all separated then give them their food back. they will all learn the time they have to eat and make sure they get enough eventually.

What's the difference between eating dogs and eating pigs or chickens?
Q. I have seen this comment many times in the answers justifying Koreans eating dog. My response has always been, "Dogs are pets, but pigs and chickens aren't." What do you think? This question isn't about judging Koreans who eat dog. I live in Korea and I will never eat dog, but those who choose to I have nothing against. Many good answers here. I can't decide so I'll let Gaya decide in the voting. Thanks everyone.

A. There is no difference between eating dog and eating a cow or a pig. The dogs eaten are raised to be eaten and are not someones pet. People around the world eat many different kinds of meat. Pigs, although not as pleasing to the eye are said to be more intelligent than dogs. I'm sure that these days many Koreans would prefer to eat dog rather than eat American beef. [ o > } [ o

Why is eating smaller meals more frequently, a better way of losing weight rather than three big meals a day?

How important is healthy eating for your fertility?
Q. I'm planning on starting my family in a couple of years (God willing) and i've been looking at my diet now... I am slim but I do eat a lot of junk food... I have started my healthy eating regime today. But how important is it to eat healthily, how does it affect fertility? Thanks in advance!
Asked by Nadine - Fri Jun 13 07:12:32 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. it is very important to eat healthily, as it is for your own health and eventually the health of your baby. you need to get all the essential nutrients, and this is not possible from a diet high in junk food. once pregnant you will feel lethargic etc, and this is because the growing baby takes all the best parts of your ingested vitamins, minerals etc, for itself, leaving you with not much, so you need to make sure you eat enough for both of you. your diet now will affect your menstrual cycle. also the diet affects the health of your body tissues. if you have a bad duet your tissues will be in poor health, so your uterus will not be in the optimum state for implantation of the foetus to take place. good luck!

A. There is nothing wrong with eating in the evening. The common mistake is that people think that because your body is slowing down you should stop eating, but by not eating your body is slowing down anyway. I'm not a dietitian but I've done alot of research into good dieting. I'll start from dinner at about 5pm, you need protein, plenty of vegetables and maybe a little bit of fats, steer clear of trans fats and make your saturated fat intake minimal. After dinner you should be ok for a couple of hours. When you start to get hungry around this time you should eat foods low in starchy carbs such as breads and potato, and eat foods higher in protein. By eating food before about an hour before bed your actually giving your body something to… [cont.]

A. You can't have a healthy diet on just vegetables. If you're thinking of turning vegetarian you need to eat wholegrains (bread, pasta, rice, cereals etc), fruit, beans, pulses, nuts and seeds. I switched over from a diet which consisted mainly of meat and general junk in one day and I was fine. Now I feel a hundred times better... haven't got ill once and my allergies have completely cleared up after I gave up milk! good luck :o)

A. Fiber, which cleans out your system N regulates your digestive system. Tons of vitamins, different fruits N veggies offer different ones. N you should already know, you need certain vitamins for different parts of your body. BUT! You need proteins too. To help rebuild muscle N keep you going. That's why vegetarians are a little slow... Unless they eat plenty of beans N nuts.

Q. My fridge is full of them, but the kitch en is also filled with junk foods too and I tend to just grab the unhealthy stuff because it tastes better. I want to become healthier by eating more fruits and veggies (which I hardly eat any of now). Today I didn't have ANY fruits or veggies, the closest thing was cottage cheese (I know that's not close). What can I tell myself or do so that I start eating fruits and veggies and just start eating healthy?

A. I think it's a good idea to start out with something easy you can just grab from the fridge. Try a cucumber you can eat the skin of, carrots, apples, pears, bananas, etc. Fruit juice is also great to get your fruits and veggies. Try not to have any junk food at all in your house, then you won't be tempted to eat any. Good luck!

How can I prevent squirrels from eating my vegitables?
Q. last year I planted tomatoes and cacumber in my garden and the squirrels ate them. This year, I planted tulips and squirrels ate them as well. How can I prevent the squirrels from eating my plants?

A. The jalapeno solution may work, you just need to remember to wash everything before YOU eat it! This may sould kind of gross, but you can buy fox or coyote urine in garden supply stores. It's used to keep nibblers out of the gardens (and works for cats, too). When you use it, get a miracle grow type solution container that mounts to your hose and spray the perimeter of the garden and in between the rows. If you notice some activity, spray the plants, but don't worry...it's not harmful or toxic. With the scent in your garden area, they will think there is a predator in the area and they will avoid it. You WILL have to reapply it, so they can smell 'fresh' urine (but you wont smell it). If you slack off, they will think the predator… [cont.]

How do you stop eating beef, chicken, and fish?
Q. I have started the road to becoming healthier by limiting my chicken and fish intake, but I am finding it hard to cut out meat altogether. I am truly against the conditions I find the farm animals in and just get sad about the whole meat industry. Any suggestions on eating with family and friends? Eating out at a restaurant?

A. Congratulations, you're on the right track! The trick is to do it gradually and don't get all obsessed. You can cook dishes that use more vegetable protein and less meat, and also dishes that mix meat with other foods so that you are satisfied without eating a whole big chunk of meat. For example, stir-fries instead of steak dinner. Another good meal is a stew with lots of different veggies, beans, and just a small quantity of meat or chicken. Tacos made with black beans instead of meat are delicious and healthy, and meatless chili is so good, you won't even notice that there's no meat in it. good luck!
