What is the best software kids encyclopedia?
Q. My 8 years old is starting summer break and I want him to get familiar with a software encyclopedia so I can give him a daily 'homework' about learning something new that interest him. He likes to use our computer to play games and I thought that maybe he'll like the idea about using a computer program to learn about general things. Thanks all of you for your help.

What is a good kid friendly encyclopedia of animals?
Q. My son is almost three and is fascinated by animals. He already knows all the household, barn and most zoo animals and is constantly wanting to know more about them and learn about new ones. I would like to get him a good encyclopedia with lots of pictures. It doesn't have to be a child's book as he already knows about all the basics, but I do want to get him one with lots of full colored pictures and general information - what they eat, where live, etc. I live in a very rural area and don't have any good bookstores around so something I can order online is ideal. If you know of any websitesI could show him that would be great too. Thank you!

A. Try these. It says 5 and up but my daughter was like that too, (still is at 11) and he can at least look at the pictures!

Magic Encyclopedia game what color do you paint the hide on the Indian Settlement?
Q. On the Magic encyclopedia game I am stuck on the Indian Settlement part. You have to collect a piece of hide that is hanging outside the teepee and after collected you have to paint the boxes. There are 3 on top and 4 on the bottom, and the paint colors are red, green and blue. Not sure what order to paint them in, can you help? Thanks.

A. Hey Kim! I was stuck on this also for a while. There is a feather that you must put on a shield by the door inside the teepee. Then there is a puzzle to solve - and the puzzle will show you the colors to paint. Apparently it's different for everyone so I can't just give you the color Good luck!

How can I get free replacement volumes of an encyclopedia set?
Q. My local library gave me an encyclopedia set with 5 missing volumes. I have found people selling them on Ebay for $15 per volume. However, is there any way I can contact libraries around the country or schools to see if they will donate them? Any suggestions?

A. You can try freecycle - it's a community where people give their stuff away to other members of the community. I think it's something like freecycle.com. You can check and see if one has been set up in your community. (I read about this about a year ago but I'm sure it's still around.)

A. Well, I've got a fifth edition, which I bought in a "used and rare" bookstore in Chicago. I think your best bet would be a good second-hand bookstore in New York. Try the Strand (see below). If they can't help, they may know someone who can.

A. A lot depends on their condition - if they are falling apart - bin them If they are in good condition take one book from each set to various antique book dealers and ask for their value pointing out that you have the full set. Then depending on what they say, sell them, keep them as an investment or back to plan A and bin them

Q. I'm looking for a recent (past 40 years) critical review of the Encyclopedia Britannica Eleventh Edition (1911). The more recent the better. The more scholarly the better. Looking for comments on its value and worth as a research source today and errors it contains. The most recent review I could fund was from the 1920s. Any help appreciated!
Asked by StBalbach - Tue Aug 1 18:19:20 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The Eleventh Edition is valued more for the number of well-known people who contributed, than for its factual content. It is generally acknowledged that one cannot rely wholly on it and should cross-reference facts. Also, it was compiled in the days of the "British Empire", and the prejudices of that time jump out of the pages, along with racial content. The first wikipedia link lists several errors in the 1911 (Eleventh) edition. Also, if you scroll down to 'Wikipedia Content' you will find details of someone who has a copy and who is willing to discuss the content with anyone. He gives his contact as Britanicajo@hotmail.com. If you scroll even further down, under 'EB1911 More Harm Than Good', you will find a less than glowing… [cont.]
