Euclidean geometry is a mathematical system attributed to the Greek mathematician Euclid of Alexandria. Euclid's Elements is the earliest known systematic discussion of geometry. It has been one of the most influential books in history, as much for its method as for its mathematical content. The method consists of assuming a small set of intuitively appealing axioms, and then proving many other propositions (theorems) from those axioms.

Although many of Euclid's results had been stated by earlier mathematicians, Euclid was the first to show how these propositions could be fit together into a comprehensive deductive and logical system. The Elements begin with plane geometry, still taught in secondary school as the first axiomatic system and the first examples of formal proof. It goes on to the solid geometry of three dimensions. Much of the Elements states results of what are now called algebra and number theory, couched in geometrical language.

For over two thousand years, the adjective "Euclidean" was unnecessary because no other sort of geometry had been conceived. Euclid's axioms seemed so intuitively obvious that any theorem proved from them was deemed true in an absolute sense. Today, however, many other self-consistent non-Euclidean geometries are known, the first ones having been discovered in the early 19th century. It also is no longer taken for granted that Euclidean geometry describes physical space. An implication of Einstein's theory of general relativity is that Euclidean space is a good approximation to the properties of physical space only if the gravitational field is not too strong.

Why is learning and understanding non-Euclidean geometry valuable in teaching high school mathematics?
Q. I need 3 or more reasons why learning and understanding non-Euclidean geometry is valuable in teach high school mathematics. Please give me as many detiailed reasons as you can.

A. 1) modern science like Einstein theory of Relativity is base on it 2) Astronomer use it to study Dark matter in the Galaxy and make gravitational lens to study the far reaches of the Universe 3) it's the basis for topology (mathematics of distortion) 4) it explains thing like Mazes and certain mapping problems 5 ) It the basis of things like the Space -time warp in science- fiction 6) might the able to explain what go on in a black hole- may be 7) explain why certain microbes are certain shapes 8) Artist use it to make anamorphosis and it helpful to look at things differently That all I can think of; for now. I hope this helps

What's another name for non euclidean geometry?
Q. Its a special question for my geometry class tomorrow. What is the name for the geometry that is not euclidean? Is it elliptic & spherical geometry? Or perhaps hyperbolic geometry? Or something else?

Development of Euclidean Geometry?
Q. Hi, I am doing an essay on Euclidean Geometry, which requires a little research that I am having a hard time finding. Every website I visit credits only Euclid with the development of Euclidean Geometry. Besides Euclid, can anyone tell me the other major contributors to the development of Euclidean Geometry? Thanks!
