Define and give an example of a solute and solvent?
Q. What effect does a catalyst have on reaction rates? What does it mean for something to be at equilibrium?
Asked by valygirl94 - Thu Apr 2 23:43:20 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. a solute is a substance is dissolved in a solvent. the simplest case is salt into water. the water dissolves the salt. but you can use two solids or two liquids, but ignore that for right now you can ask your teacher about that later. catalyst has no effect on reaction rate in an equilibrium equation, it only decreases activation energy and can be applied in both directions. however in a one way reaction catalysts speeds up a reaction rate by decreasing required activation energy for the reaction to occur. at equilibrium the products and reactants are changing into each other but at a rate at which there is a balanced exchange. meaning for every reactant that becomes a product a product becomes a reactant.

A. A solute is what is going to be dissolved. The solvent is what the solute is dissolved in. A solution is the solute and the solvent together.

I was wondering in a solution, is the thing added a solvent or a solute?
Q. Example in kool-aid, is the powder the solute or solvent?
Asked by bihacmi - Sun Nov 9 19:50:36 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. "The thing added" is ambiguous. You can add the powder to the water, or the water to the powder (depending on which enters the container first.) The dissolving medium is the solvent. In a solution containing a solid and a liquid, the liquid is always considered to be the solvent. (Liquids have priority over solids, which have priority over gases. When a solution consists of more than one component of the same state, the one present in greatest quantity is considered to be the solvent.)

A. A solute is a substance that dissloves in a solvent. The solvent molecule surround the solute molecule and breaks apart the intermolecular bonds that hold the solute in a solid form. As a result each solute molecule is surrounded by solvent molecule ( usually a solute is broken into pieces like salt). It the case of an ionic solute the solvent surrounds both the Na+ and Cl- part of the NaCl. If you add too much solute such that the solvent can't handle that much - you get what's termed a saturated solution. Adding more salt after this point does nothing - there are no more solvent molecule free to dissolve the solute. A long winded explaination...

Can supersaturation crystallization happen if a solute is added to an impure solvent, made of water and a coll?
Q. An example would be something like..supersaturating Epsom salt in a solution of milk and water.
Asked by dwight t - Mon Mar 16 23:29:37 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Adding ionic compounds to water will increase the ionic strength of the solution. This could cause the colloidal substance to agglomerate but that is not the same thing as crystallization.

How can I tell what the solvent/solute is in the solution?
Q. Here is an example from my chem homework. I will show what I did. If someone could try it themselves and tell me their answer. Also explain how to know what the solvent is. Here's the problem: Calculate the vapor pressure of a solution of 92.1 g of glycerin, C3H8O3, in 184 g of ethanol, C2H5OH at 40C. The vapor pressure of pure ethanol at 40C is 135.3 torr. Equation: Psolution = (x solvent) X (Psolvent) Here is what I did: 92.1/92 = (about) 1 184/46 = 4 4 (I am thinking ethanol is the solvent) / 4 + 1 4/5 X 135.3 = (about) 108 torr I included sig figs. But, I am still not sure how to determine what the solvent is given the info. I only assumed it was ethanol because they gave the vapor pressure of it. Any help is appreciated.

Biology Help!?
Q. I have a few osmosis questions as I am still not clear on the topic and am having difficulty resolving them. Any insight is appreciated. How does concentration affect the direction in which osmosis occurs? Define solute, solvent and solution. Then state state examples of them as used in the experiment. (I do not know how to distinguish these terms nor how to identify them in the experiment I did which used distilled water and sucrose as well as dialysis tubing)
Asked by english - Sun Oct 7 20:51:56 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Concentration affects the direction of osmosis because water will flow from a low solute concentration to a higher solute concentration. The solute is the substance that gets dissolved. In terms of your experiment, the sucrose is the solute. The solvent is the liquid that does the dissolving. The distilled water is the solvent. The solution is a homogenous (uniform) mixture of the solute and solvent.
