determining the best solvent based on the retention factor.?
Q. Given the retention factors of several dyes, what solvent system would work best for the components of the dye. Is it the solvents that create the largest retention factor numbers for the components, or teh ones with more separated distince retention factors? Example Solvent Retention factors H20 0.64 0.38 0.28 H20 + 2 % NaCl 0.92 0.10 0.27 isopropanol/H20 0.79 0.45 0.43 which is the best solvent to use?
Asked by Jay - Sun Jan 27 21:14:38 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The one that gives the most separation. That means that there is less chance of error. So the isopropanol one gives little separation for two of the compounds, so would not be the one. It looks to me like water/salt gives the best separations.

Examples of Good solvent pairs?
Q. For some reason I cant understand why some solvents aren't good pairs? I have a few example problems from class that are listed below: water-ethanol acetone-ethanol hexane-pentane ethanol-hexane water-hexane ethyl acetate-hexane Any reasons that a person could understand with limited knowledge with organic chemistry would be the most helpful :)

A. Things that are polar will dissolve other things that are polar. Nonpolar items will dissolve in nonpolar solvents. You have to look at each pair and decide whether they are polar or nonpolar.

Asked by xinxin - Sat Jan 12 09:06:15 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A solvent is a liquid that dissolves a solid, liquid, or gas, and this results in a solution. The solid, liquid, or gas that is dissolved is called the solute. An aqueous solution is when a solute is dissolved in water, for example, when you pour salt into water before cooking spaghetti: the salt (solute) is being dissolved into the solvent (water), making an aqueous solution. Compounds with the ions Na+, K+, and NH4+ are all soluble in water, along with nitrates, acetate, sulfates, and chlorides.

A. Many organic acid have a little or almost nil solubility in water but these are soluble in solvents like ether, chloroform, benzene, ethanol, methanol, etc. Such acid are also sloble in dilute alkali like NaOH, KOH, etc. Many aromatic amines are insoluble in water. These are soluble in organic solvents like ether, benzene, chloroform, ethanol, methanol, etc. These are also soluble in dilute acid like HCl and H2SO4, etc.

Define and give an example of a solute and solvent?
Q. What effect does a catalyst have on reaction rates? What does it mean for something to be at equilibrium?
Asked by valygirl94 - Thu Apr 2 23:43:20 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. a solute is a substance is dissolved in a solvent. the simplest case is salt into water. the water dissolves the salt. but you can use two solids or two liquids, but ignore that for right now you can ask your teacher about that later. catalyst has no effect on reaction rate in an equilibrium equation, it only decreases activation energy and can be applied in both directions. however in a one way reaction catalysts speeds up a reaction rate by decreasing required activation energy for the reaction to occur. at equilibrium the products and reactants are changing into each other but at a rate at which there is a balanced exchange. meaning for every reactant that becomes a product a product becomes a reactant.

I need examples of household solutions?
Q. Hey, do you guys know some examples of household solutions, and kindly indicate what/which is the solute and the solvent. For example, Vinegar -- solute: acetic acid, solvent: water. Something like that, thanks! Will really appreciate your answers.

A. Some household solutions are... ammonia (used in al lot of household cleaners) - in this the solute is ammonia gas and the solvent is water nasal spray - in this the solute is salt and the solvent is water (most nasal sprays are just salt water) bleach - here the solute is HOCL3 (the three is a subscript) and the solvent is water and... liquid plumber (the pipe cleaner) - the solute is sodium hydroxide and the solvent is water i hope this is what you were looking for =]

how to determine the degreasing power for one solvent? TCE vs. Hydrocarbon?
Q. Example: what to look at to determine the degreasing power of one cleaning solvent? I need to compare TCE and Hydrocarbon cleaning solvent.
Asked by You got it right! - Thu Jun 1 02:05:00 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Trichloroethylene (TCE) IS a chlorinated hydrocarbon as are tetrachloroethylene (TTCE) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA). To be honest they are all pretty evil substances and they have mostly been banned in Europe as they are classified as CFC's. I used to work for an aerospace company and they used 'trike' (as we called it, actually 1,1,1-trichloroethane). Just seeing it boiling away in the baths would give me the 'willies'. You should look up the source material below before deciding whether you want to go near the stuff. If you do have to work with these substances you should ensure you are in an adequaely ventilated environment. Sources (3) and (4) give alternatives to using these chemicals. Other than that, to determine the degreasing… [cont.]

Chemistry :Can someone explain me what are organic solvents?
Q. Im Estonian i really need to know what they are but i have no knowledge about English names Can you give some examples of organic solvents? Is ether a organic solvent?
Asked by Dar - Mon Nov 10 11:16:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, ether (the common name for diethyl ether) is an organic solvent. Other examples of organic solvents are ethyl acetate (EtOAc), hexane, 1,4-dioxane, toluene, tetrahydrofuran (THF), acetonitrile (ACN), dicholoromethane (DCM), and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), just to name a few. To answer your first question, an organic solvent is a solvent which is made up of organic molecules (carbon-based, covalently bonded, etc). In general, organic solvents are low boiling (<170 degrees C) liquids that can dissolve a variety of organic compounds and be easily removed by concentrating the solution under reduced pressure. Hope this helps!!!
