Is Rhodium the most expensive metal?
Q. I've noticed over the past 2 years that the price for rhodium per troy ounce has ranged from 1,000$ clear up to 10,000$. Considering this, is it safe to say that rhodium is the most expensive metal on the market? Also, why is it so expensive and what applications is rhodium used for that would require such an expensive metal compared to platinum or gold?

How much more expensive are ceramic braces than metal braces?
Q. Im fifteen and just now getting braces, but really dont want to because all of my friends are getting theirs off now. i was thining, and i would really rather have ceramic braces than the traditional metal ones because they are much less noticeable. i'm not sure if my mom would pay tons of extra money for them though. so about how much more expensive are ceramic braces?

A. I have ceramic, my orthodontist doesn't really allows children to get ceramic. Metal braces move teeth a bit quicker. Anyway, to answer your question it is about $200 - $350 each meaning upper and lower. So if you want both (upper and lower) it shouldn't be over $700. Some dentist won't even really charge you for ceramic. My dentist was so nice, he really wanted me to have ceramic and help me fix my smile he let me have ceramic for the same cost as metal. I love him!

Why are metal trash cans so expensive?
Q. It doesn't seem like something meant to hold your garbage should be so expensive, but even light aluminum trash cans are so expensive. Why is this? Which stage of production or shipment makes it so expensive? I've never understood this.

If there is silver clay and gold clay to make jewelry, is there alloy clay, or other less expensive metals?
Q. I want to make jewelry w/metal clay, but I don't think that I can afford the gold clay. Is there something that is less expensive that looks like gold, or a very low carat of gold clay that would cost less? I'm also interested in metal paint that looks like gold. Does anyone know about this? Thank you!

A. I don't have a lot of time to respond now, but you can make polymer clay look like gold and other metals quite convincingly... there is "gold" mica-containing polymer clay, but also real-metal or mica powders can be used on the clay, or "composition" metal leaf, etc. Check these pages at my site for more on those things: (...click on the category called METAL) (...click on MICA powders and on real metal powders) (...click on LEAF) (...this page is mostly about all the special effects that can be done with gold and other mica-containing polymer clays, but some of the links might be inspirational) HTH, Diane B.

A. Right now, rhodium is the most expensive metal, due to its scarcity and the industrial applications (mostly catalysts for chemical reactions) where only poor alternatives exist. A similar metal, rhenium, is sometime valued more highly, for similar reasons. This applies only to naturally occurring elements, as synthetic ones, like the americium that is put in smoke detector in extremely small quantity (americium is produced in nuclear reactor, extracted from spent fuel) could evidently be more expensive still. That said, if one wants to add gems to the equation, all bets are off, as a flawless diamond that is 2 carat in weight is more than twice as expensive as an equally flawless 1 carat diamond; basically, the value per carat goes up with… [cont.]

In general are Invisalign braces a lot more expensive than regular, metal braces?
Q. Which is the better investment for the money? Are invisible braces much more costly than regular ones?
Asked by The Disciple - Mon Jun 26 01:11:17 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Invisalign braces certainly are more expensive than the traditional type, and they can't correct a lot of problems like traditional braces can. Invisalign can correct minor misalignments, but for seriously crooked teeth you will need the old fashioned metal. The other option is clear brackets on your traditional braces. Having worked in the dental industry for 6 years I think that traditional braces work better most of the time and are a better investment. But each case should be assessed by a dentist.

Q. What is the lightest/least expensive, durable, glass and metal in the world and where can i buy it?
Asked by GamerWizz - Sat May 30 13:58:18 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments
A. The lightest and most durable (i.e., strongest and most ductile) materials are going to be the most expensive, not the least. Titanium alloys are very durable, with a very high strength-to-weight ratio, temperature resistance, and ductility. However, they are expensive. If you want something that isn't terribly strong, but is cheap and light, I suggest 6061 aluminum alloy. You can buy it here: If you want durable glass, you need annealed borosilicate glass (aka Pyrex). Another, more expensive option is laminated glass/plastic sheets.

A. Lutetium is a silvery white corrosion-resistant trivalent metal that is relatively stable in air and is the heaviest and hardest of the rare earth elements. Lutetium has the highest spin quantum number of the elements, at 7. This element is very expensive to obtain in useful quantities and therefore it has very few commercial uses. However, stable lutetium can be used as catalysts in petroleum cracking in refineries and can also be used in alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization applications. Lutetium aluminum garnet (Al5Lu3O12) has been proposed for use as a lens material in high refractive index immersion lithography. A. Ok, assuming this is not some kind of silly riddl you want us to guess the answer to, I am going to say it is one of the man made radioactive elements like Californium. Cf is so incredibly unstable (short half life) that even if they tried to make it in quantity, it breaks down into smaller atoms very quickly. After a few hours or days, there is an undetectably small amount left. And, considering that to make it requires atom smashers and other multimillion dollar equipment, and heavy radioactive isotopes to hit with the particles to bu8ild up the Cf atoms, I am guessing that this is the most expensive element in the world. 21 DEC 06, 0345 hrs, GMT.

How do I paint a plastic mail box and it's stand to look like old metal?
Q. The mail box stand is styled to look like a heavy expensive metal stand with the all the nice webbing. The problem is that it's black plastic and it looks like plastic. How can I paint it to look like old metal?
Asked by thedfordbyrum - Sun Nov 8 10:38:05 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You can use a silver silver color to paint the mailbox but make sure you first use a primer that is recommended for plastic. After priming and painting, if you want a more rustic look, use the same silver color you painted the mailbox with and mix just a little brown paint and dab this over some areas with a piece of sponge. For an even more rustic look, add just a bit of red paint for an even more weathered look. One tip though, get a practice surface and try this before you paint the mailbox. This technique takes a little practice, but it should give you the desired effect.

What's less expensive as far as roofing, "screw down metal roofing" or "basic shingle roofing"?
Q. THe best I hear is "seemless" metal roofing but it is also more expensive. I lived in a house once with the screw down metal roofing types and well there was leakage where the screws were screwed into thru the metal and then into the "runners or strappings"... there is a little washer on the screw and it's suppossed to seal it up but I guess it only lasts for a certain number of years before the wind and snow(weather elements) take their toll... Is tin nailed down? or do they have that seemless nowadays?

A. depends on the metal like shingles there are many types and grades screw down metal ( as opposed to soldered ) is always cheaper than shingles to INSTALL ( assuming you are talking about sheets not shingles ) and usually the basic galvanized 'tin' or aluminum is cheaper per square to purchase high quality metal ( copper coated - anodized - copper ) is more expensive but can be cheaper in the long run ( except for copper sheet which is outrageous in cost ) due to its 50-75 year lifespan ( shingles 15-25 years )
