Experience as a general concept comprises knowledge of or skill in or observation of some thing or some event gained through involvement in or exposure to that thing or event. The history of the word experience aligns it closely with the concept of experiment.

The concept of experience generally refers to know-how or procedural knowledge, rather than propositional knowledge. Philosophers dub knowledge based on experience "empirical knowledge" or "a posteriori knowledge".

The interrogation of experience has a long tradition in continental philosophy. Experience is an important aspect of the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard. The German term Erfahrung, often translated into English as "experience" has a slightly different implication, connoting the coherency of life's experiences.

A person with considerable experience in a certain field can gain a reputation as an expert.

Certain religious traditions (such as types of Buddhism, Surat Shabd Yoga and mysticism) and educational paradigms with, for example, the conditioning of boot camps, stress the experiential nature of human epistemology. This stands in contrast to alternatives: traditions of dogma, logic or reasoning. Activities such as tourism, extreme sports and recreational drug use also tend to stress the importance of experience.

Has anyone had bad experiences with pet sitters, especially ones who are uninsured and unlicenced?
Q. Am at present in dispute with a sitter and am wondering how many other people have gone through similar experiences. Am particularly interested in pet sitters who are uninsured and unlicenced (required for all pet sitters who use their own home in UK). Am trying to gain enough info on peoples experiences to start a campaign for some form of regulation to come into place. Let me know your stories. Thanks.

A. I really hope that they never have any kind of regulations on pet-sitting here. When I was a kid, I spent all my free time pet/house/baby-sitting and I really do feel that it helped me develop a sense of responsibility and a love for animals in particular. Besides, requiring pet-sitters to be licensed would make it technically illegal for you to ask a friend or family member to sit your pets for you. What a can of worms! I have never had any trouble with pet sitters. If you screen them properly, it really should never be an issue. However, I HAVE had trouble with people I pet-sat FOR who made false accusations and outright LIED in order to get out of paying me for the work I did. When it comes to sitting, it's the sitter who gets the raw… [cont.]

What are peoples experiences using paragard birth control?
Q. My husband and I are expecting our first child in two weeks (I can't wait!!) and I don't plan on getting pregnant again for at least 2 years. This pregnancy was planned, and before we got pregnant we always used natural family planning. But at this stage I don't want to risk getting pregnant shortly after we have our baby. I just want to know what peoples experiences are, and whether or not they would recommend it. Thanks in advance for your answers!

A. I had the Paraguard Copper IUD placed in June 2006 after my daughter was born. Never had any problems with it, always checked the strings and always found them. I missed a period in September, took two home pregnancy tests (both positive) and went to the doctor. Yep I was preggers! He removed the IUD, said the placement was still perfect. We did an ultrasound to make sure the pregnancy was not ectopic, and the baby is right where it is supposed to be. I saw the heart beating, and the ultrasound tech said there was no evidence that I ever had an IUD in the first place. They are supposed to be 99.4 % effective. I would never trust one again.

What experiences could make a person feel he had conrol over the chances of reinforcement coming into his life?
Q. Some people seem to feel they have little control over the reinforcement that comes into their lives. What kinds of experiences do you think could change this view, make a person feel he had more control over the chances of reinforcement coming into his life?

A. People that feel they have little control over reinforcements (rewards) are likely to attribute good things that happen to them to chance (something external, environmental) rather than to thier good efforts (something internal, personal). As a result, they are more likely to explain positive occurances in thier life as chance happenings and less likely to recognize thier own role in contributing to the positive outcome. People can gain insight into thier own role in successes by shifting thier perspective and experiencing new things. Examples of reinforcements (rewards) that occur in everyday life are getting good grades by studying, making a good meal then sitting down to enjoy it, dieting then losing weight, practicing a skill (i.e.… [cont.]
