Q. What factors determine the value of stock? What is the most important factor and why?
Asked by joel_morris1 - Wed Apr 26 12:49:46 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The value of a company is the present value of all future predicted cash flows. Therefore, anything that can affect the predicted future income of the company will affect price. If a new technology that will lower costs comes out from the company, the price will go up as that will cause it to have less expenses. If something happens to the CEO and he is caught for doing something illegal, that will lower public opinion which will lower how much they sell... making the price go down.

Can I factor a negative number out of a positive number?
Q. I have 2x^3-20x^2-48x and I am trying to factor to reach the zeros. Seems like the only way I can make it work is to factor out -2x, would that work or is factoring negatives out of positives not allowed for some reason?
Asked by ogroktehuber - Mon Jan 14 00:08:13 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can certainly factor out a negative number, but you don't have to here. 2x^3-20x^2-48x = 2x ( x^2 - 10x - 24 ) 2x ( x - 12 ) ( x + 2 )

Which factor best describes the motivation behind the founding of the English Colonies?
Q. The factors could be relevant to the religious freedom and the economic betterment, but there could be any other factor.
Asked by aj23player - Fri Jul 24 12:32:30 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The English, unlike france and especially spain, did not put a great deal of importance in spreading religion. Britain's motivation was almost entirely mercantile. That's why the settlement of Jamestown is considered more of a company than a colony. They needed workers to go and harvest the raw materials for them to be used in British factories to make finished goods. As a side note, the fact that the colonies could only trade with the british was a major reason for the separation, as our rights to trade had been taken. Also, this led to the popularity of piracy in the Caribbean, because people wanted to get this.

How much of a factor is legacy when applying to college?
Q. My dad went to Northwestern University, and my mom went to Brown. I'm interested in both and I have very good grades, test scores, lots of extracurricular activities, etc. Still, I'm curious as to how much of a factor being legacy will be when applying?
Asked by Roy - Sun Apr 5 19:41:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well you can receive legacy scholarships if a parent or relative went to that college. It shows that your parents went there and completed their education and that you may too. also If your parents were in a fraternity or sorority you have a better chance of getting into those if your interested.

What is the most important factor in explaining the increasing gender gap in college completion?
Q. In 1972, the U.S. Department of Education passed Title IX, which intended to redress gender inequality in schools. Men and women reached parity with respect to college graduation in 1982. Since then, women have overtaken men - in 2004 women earned 58% of Bachelor's degrees awarded in the United States. What specific factor(s) have led to this dramatic change? Opinions are fine, but if you can actually provide some evidence to support your answer, that would be even better.

A. Access. For example, in 1972, although I qualified for a prestigious science and technology scholarship and degree program, I was not allowed to attend because I was female. It is most difficult to complete college if one is not allowed to attend college. With access, women have opportunity. What any student does with academic opportunity is dependent upon individual character AND current acculturated role expectations that burden and influence both sexes directly and indirectly, and acculturated behaviors including work ethic, motivation, self-drive, delayed adolescence (which hobbles males more than females), emotional stability (beer kegger / video game / Internet addictions are blamed for some of the statistical decline in male… [cont.]

How do you factor a polynomial with a leading coefficient?
Q. For example, I am trying to factor 5r^2-26r + 5. How would you go about factoring this? Please show your steps.
Asked by Joe C - Tue Oct 6 22:10:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Looking at the first term, the factors will have to begin like this: (5r ... ) (r ,,, ) Looking at the last term, the factors will have to look like this, but maybe not in the same order as before: (... 5) (... 1) In order to get 26 in the middle term, the 5's need to be in the outer places: (5r ... 1) (r ... 5) In order to get the middle term to be negative, both factors need a minus sign in the middle: (5r - 1) (r - 5) The leading coefficient didn't cause anything unusual here.

How was temperature an important determination factor in the chemical composition of the planets?
Q. Differences in temperature determine the type of materials each planets was made from. The rate of cooling was a factor. Are there any basic explanations to this?
Asked by Anita - Tue May 19 16:12:51 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, I was taught that the chemical composition of our planets has to do with their distance from the sun. Note that close planets have little atmosphere and are comprised primarily of rock, while further planets have more atmosphere.. There's a distinct line in the solar system seperating gassy planets and rocky planets. When our solar system formed, the sun was made first, comprised of the matter in the center of the system. As planets began to form from the debris ring around the sun, closer planets couldn't hold an atmosphere very well because gasses and liquids like that would evaporate off the planet from the intense heat. The further the planet was, the more atmosphere it could maintain until you get what we call gas giants.

What is the relationship between the friction factor and Reynolds number in heat exchange?
Q. I did a lab experiment on a heat exchanger and the graph of friction factor against reynolds number had a positive gradient contrary to what I expected from the relationship f=0.046/Re^0.2. What could be the reason for this?
Asked by Elsen - Tue Nov 14 16:19:16 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. For most fluids, you would expect to see a negative gradient if you would plot the friction factor vs. 64 / Re ...top number is relative based on units or something. Are you sure you're plotting it correctly? The friction factor should be decreasing as the velocity of the fluid in the pipe is increased. I'm rusty w/ my chen material so this is all I have for answer; for now.

How was the Industrial revolution a major factor in the rise of Imperialism?
Q. Imperialism is strengthening one nation by it's territorial acquisition, right? Domination over other territories...But didn't the industrial rev. mean a more modern age? About equality or freedom and such...so how could the industrial revolution lead to the coming up of imperialism? shouldn't it be the downfall? Asked by HistoryLuv - Sun May 27 23:53:51 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Industrialism has nothing to do with freedom and liberty...they can coexists but they are not co-dependent. The reason for the rise of Imperialism during the industrial revolution is one of economics. With the rise of industry, countries found that they were able to produce more goods than there own countries could provide raw materials for. They need for more raw materials influenced countries into a imperialistic polices.

What is the relationship between the growth factor of an exponential and its y/ x vs y?
Q. How can I find what the growth factor of the exponential model is, from the y/ x vs y equation? How do they relate to each other?
Asked by Amy - Tue Sep 9 07:03:16 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What do you mean by " y/ x"? Are you referring to the standard "dy/dx," denoting a derivative? The symbol does indicate change... as does the 'd' in Leibniz's notation of the derivative... but the 'd' refers to an infinitesimal change while refers to any finite change. Anyway... the rate of change of any exponential function y = a^x will have a value of ln(a) a^x If y = a^x then y' = dy/dx = ln(a) a^x It is no coincidence that the transcendental number 'e', Euler's number (approx 2.718281828...) works beautifully with this. If y = e^x then y' = dy/dx = e^x ... the functional value and its instantaneous slopes are the same. That is no coincidence. This is the defining basis for what 'e' is. The value for e was evaluated using the… [cont.]
