A farm is an area of land, including various structures, devoted primarily to the practice of producing and managing food (produce, grains, or livestock), fibers and, increasingly, fuel. It is the basic production facility in food production. Farms may be owned and operated by a single individual, family, community, corporation or a company. A farm can be a holding of any size from a fraction of a hectare to several thousand hectares.

Types of farms

A business producing tree fruits or nuts is called orchard; a vineyard produces grapes. The stable is used for operations principally involved in the training of horses. Stud and commercial farms breed and produce other animals and livestock. A farm that is primarily used for the production of milk and dairy is a dairy farm. A market garden or truck farm is a farm that grows vegetables, but little or no grain. Additional specialty farms include fish farms, which raise fish in captivity as a food source, and tree farms, which grow trees for sale for transplant, lumber, or decorative use. A plantation is usually a large farm or estate, on which cotton, tobacco, coffee or sugar cane, are cultivated, usually by resident laborers.

How do very small farms earn a living?
Q. I've often loved the idea of just quitting everything and buying a little piece of land (say 5-10 acres) with a house and maybe and outbuilding or two - and trying to make a modest income from that - but have no idea what small farms do to make money. That's certainly not enough land to say have a dairy farm - or (I'd think) to grow enough of a crop to make much of a profit. I've thought of maybe a small greenhouse type thing - but have no idea who you would sell your product to. Does anyone know anything about this - or have any websites or books to suggest? Thanks very much!

A. It can be done. It is a lot of hard work, and one member of the family will need a job to sustain the family, pay taxes and medical insurance. You will have to live in a manner that farmers existed prior to the advent of electricity; up with the sun, to bed when it gets dark. You will need to get used to using a lot less electricity, knowledge to fix things, or barter to get things fixed. You will need to learn when to plant, what to plant. Small farm families survive by finding niche markets. You will want to raise certified organic foods and find a restaurant or grocery that will carry your produce. Free range eggs, raw milk and organic produce fetch a premium price, but you will not be driving a lexus, you may be riding in an ox-drawn… [cont.]

How do tree farms that are on clay dirt make their land more fertile?
Q. how do they ammend the dirt to allow for best most promising growth of trees, shrubs , etc? noticed many tree, shrub farms in the US are in areas of mostly clay and sedimentary rock even. why is this? Thanks for your answers!

A. First of all, clay actually attracts water. It is the smallest of the soil particles. Because it attracts water, the water makes it bind together. Therefore, clay soil is the most nutrient rich, because the soils nutrients are water soluble. Problem is, it is so tightly bound that the roots can't get to it. So you mix in some type of organic material to break up the clay and improve quality. Most farmers here in Ga top dress their pastures with manure. In our county we have lots of chicken farms, so in spring and fall they spread composted chicken manure. PU! Tree farmers only need to amend the area where the tree is planted. Many types of organic material are used. Which ever is cheaper will do. Many people use shredded limbs,… [cont.]
