How do I go about finding out if teens like acting?
Q. I have recently started a production company and I have so many ideas for new shows that I would like to do that are young adult sitcoms. But the problem is finding teen actors. I don't live in LA, Florida, or New York, I'm from SC and my production company is in SC. I personally think the larger cities are over crowded and over rated. But being from SC makes it hard to find actors, even harder to find teen actors. What is the best way to advertise specifically what I need?

A. Newspapers, radio, fliers and friends. Spread the word as much as possible. Just ask around. A LOT of kids want to be on television. Me, being one of many. Believe me, you'll have chances. The number 1 way to find kids, are to put new websites up. Find someone who knows how to make sites and you're good. It's as easy and sending links, posting blogs, and advertising on myspace, facebook, and places such as this.

A. I do a lot of math tutoring on this site, so I've seen this and questions like this before: "Why study ___ ?" (fill in the blank). What's it good for? I'm not going to be a carpenter or carpet layer or whatever." I personally think that learning math skills goes far beyond knowing how to factor a polynomial or even calculating the area of something. What's really important is that math stretches your thinking and problem-solving capability. If you know how to approach a complex problem and systematically break it down into simple steps, that's a tremendous skill to have. This is because you usually don't get problems in real life like what you have in your book. Sometimes they are similar and so you can adapt something, but more… [cont.]

A. You could find new clients at marketplaces like or When businesses post projects on these sites designers submit quotes and show them their portfolios. DesignBay is good for start-ups because it's free to register and submit quotes. Often designers will win a piece of work using a marketplace and then develop the relationship with that client outside the marketplace.

How do Journalists go about finding subjects for their story?
Q. How do Journalists come about subjects for their stories? In newspapers and magazines you read amazing life stories about people that seem like ordinary neighbours. How do Journalists come about finding these people/stories? Or if the Journalist is famous enough, do subjects come find them?

A. We look everywhere we can. A sense of curiosity is a start, of course, and a knack for finding the unusual helps. We also listen -- plenty of good ideas come from friends and readers. E-mail has really helped in that regard. Funny story along those lines -- my wife once told me that I should do a story on two of our friends who have been running together on weekends for 25 years. I asked, what's the hook? I discovered that they started because one thought it would be a good way to get over the grief caused by the death of a child. Bingo. Got a really nice warm story of it. You just never know. But usually, everyone has a story to tell.

What do you get for finding a typo in a published book?
Q. I just started reading a book, and I have found a typo in the book. Do you get any money for finding it? If so, who do you contact about it?
Asked by chrisnjodysimms - Thu Nov 13 12:11:12 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No, you don't get anything. You can write to the publisher (the address of the publishing house will be on the copyright page of the book, or you can check their website for contact information) but there isn't a reward for finding a typo. And if you've noticed it, odds are someone else (a literary critic or reviewer) has already noticed it too.

What are the pros and cons of finding a job through an employment agency?
Q. I'm having a hard time finding a good job and I'm considering using an agency to help me find work. I've never done this before. Can anyone give me the pros and cons? They told me that we can work out direct hire or temp to hire options so I'm not bouncing from one assignment to the next.
Asked by CJ - Sat Jan 13 15:42:41 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Pros: They have access to more employers. Many of those employers won't advertise anywhere else. Also, they will allow you to seek jobs on your own still. It doesn't take anything AWAY from your search, just adds more places to look. Cons: They take part of your pay if it's temporary. Typically they don't do that for permanent jobs though. Also, getting a temp job through them might make it harder to find a permanent job depending on your commitment. Temp jobs aren't great on the resume either. Overall I think they add without harming your search, so go for it, but don't rely JUST on them.

How do I start finding clients as an graphic designer..?

A. Yes, you do need a portfolio, but you also need to know how long it takes you to create certain things so you can quote jobs. Start by giving yourself "assignments," as if you had customers. Keep a time sheet on each project, like you would for any client. Use the finished pieces for your portfolio. Design your portfolio to appeal to the kind of customer you want to approach. Most of my customers when I first started were small businesses and hospitals, so my portfolio reflected the types of things that they actually needed... logos, business cards, letterheads, brochures, newspaper and magazine advertisements, in-store signs, 8 1/2 x 11 handouts. How do I go about finding the contact information?
Q. How do I go about finding the contact information, Management Company or owner of a strip mall? I know I could ask in person but unless you ask the person that writes the rent check you get wrong information. Is there a web site or something? I am trying to solicit the landscaping accounts. Thanks!

A. This is an easy one! You can find that in public records from your tax assessor. They have to receive their property tax bill every year so the assessors office of the area you are looking for will have the most current contact information. Be sure and bring as much information on the property as possible. You might have to go to the permit office to get the legal description from the manciple address. Some assessors office only keeps records by legal descriptions. These records should be free and are available to the public. You may have to pay for copies of the records so just bring a pen and paper with you.

What is the formula for finding the number of possible combinations?
Q. For example, say I have five six-sided dice. What is the formula for finding out how many different rolls I can make? It's something along the lines of 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 but I'm missing something. Thanks!

A. if you have 5 dice, 6^5 is the number of ways you can make different rolls. 6 possibilities for each dice 5 times.

How do you go about finding a doctor to get a prescription for medication for social anxiety?
Q. I haven't been diagnosed with social anxiety but I know that this is what I have. I don't know how to go about finding a doctor because I don't have a regular one.

A. Your best bet is to call a local hospital and get a list of doctors in your area and make an appointment. Explain to the doctor your symptoms. You and the doctor can decide together how best to treat your symptoms. Good luck
