Flight is the process by which an object moves either through the air, or movement beyond earth's atmosphere (as in the case of spaceflight), by generating lift, propulsive thrust or aerostatically using buoyancy, or by simple ballistic movement.

Types

Morning flight

Humans, although not apparently other animals, have managed to construct lighter than air vehicles that fly due to their buoyancy in air.

I've heard of the introductury flights offered by flight schools and had questions?
Q. I've heard of those introductury flights offered by flight schools for $100 and under, and was wondering what happens during one? Do you get to sit up front in the passenger seat during the flight? Can you take your camera with? How long does the flight last? Thanks in advance.

A. The introductory flight is an introduction to flight instruction. You will preflight the airplane, under your instructor's supervision. You will sit in the left front seat as a student pilot, and the instructor will sit in the right seat. You will be given preliminary experiences with some basic maneuvers, and you may make a supervised landing. In most cases they will give you a cheap logbook, and log your flight as actual time toward your certificates. You will be too busy to take pictures while in the air, but if you are a picture taking type, bring your camera. There will be other things you will want pictures of.

Flight school financial aid or loan repayment?
Q. Does anyone know if any of the regional or major commercial airlines have loan repayment programs for pilots? I have a strong interest in flying and I'm looking for help in financing flight school, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to go to ATP's flight school. Would FAFSA help with flight school? I'd love to hear from some pilots who have dealt with this before, however like I said ANY advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How often are stewardesses on the same flight?
Q. Hi! How often are stewardesses scheduled on the same flight, i.e. If the fly on a Friday from Frankfurt to Athens, how soon will they be scheduled on that flight again. Is there any way to find out about the scheduling times and flights, if you are not working for that airline? Are they allowed to give out this information or is that confidential? I mean can I call them up and ask for such info? Thanks! Stephan

A. The F/A schedule depends entirely on how the monthly "bid lines" (monthly schedule) were constructed at that airline. At one carrier, the same trip may be repeated on a weekly basis in a given "line", and in another line the trips may vary each week. As mentioned, the line a F/A gets is bid by seniority. This means that the junior ones will generally be on reserve and will have a monthly schedule that varies quite a bit as they cover open flights. The more senior F/As will have a set schedule, which may or may not be a weekly repeat of the same sequence depending on how crew scheduling constructed the flight attendant lines for the month. At my airline, our trip sequences are genreally repeated every week and we always start work on the… [cont.]

Aviation refers to flying using aircraft, machines designed by humans for atmospheric flight. More generally, the term also describes the activities, industries, and regulatory bodies associated with aircraft.

  • When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.
  • No bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings.
  • Pilots take no special joy in walking. Pilots like flying.
  • The way I see it, you can either work for a living or you can fly airplanes. Me, I'd rather fly.
  • Pilots are a rare kind of human. They leave the ordinary surface of the word, to purify their soul in the sky, and they come down to earth, only after receiving the communion of the infinite.
  • If God had intended us to fly, He would have given us wings.

Note that many humorous variations have been made from this, replacing the second half of the sentence with things such as, "He would have given us more money" or "He would have bought us the tickets" or in the quixotic commentery of Michael Flanders, "he would never have given us railways".
  • If God had intended us to fly, he wouldn't have invented Spanish air traffic control.
