How do I get melted aluminum foil off of the bottom of my self-cleaning oven?
Q. I see this question has been posted before, so I'm not the only person who was shocked to find that aluminum foil can melt. Did anyone try any of the suggestions and did they work?
Asked by Brooke22365 - Mon Apr 30 17:21:06 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The melting point of aluminum is 1220 degrees F. No way you oven gets that hot. Much more likely that melted food is holding a piece of foil stuck in you oven.

Does having foil in the bottom of the oven actually effect it's cooking performance?
Q. Someone told me it made the oven heat unevenly and cooking time longer, but I keep foil on the bottom of it so it's easier to clean. Just wondering if it was really true that it's more harmful than helpful.
Asked by Mrs A - Fri Aug 17 10:08:40 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Instead of using foil on the bottom, when I am cooking something messy, I use a pan on the shelf under it to catch drippings and spills. It has not affected my cooking time or heat distribution.

How to clean an electric oven?
Q. I've tried using Easy Off in my oven. It works well but I'm getting annoyed with trying to avoid getting spray on the heating elements. I've done the tin foil but it's still a pain. Is there any non flammable all over oven cleaner spray that is safe to use in an electric oven? I'm wondering if I'm making a hard job even harder by doing it the way I am doing it now.

A. Try putting Ammonia in a bowl and place the bowl in your oven overnight. The fumes from the Ammonia "should" soften any burned on stuff and make it easy to wipe off. This works on stove grates and wire shelves, only put those in a plastic bag and dump the ammonia in, tie and let stand overnight.

Is oven cleaner bad for the heating coil?
Q. I have an electric oven. Can I spray oven cleaner on the heating coil in the bottom, or do I have to cover it up with something? I covered it once by wrapping it with strips of foil and the foil disintegrated a bit from the cleaner and was hard to get off. I can tip the coil up a bit and spray under it to coat the oven bottom, but do I have to be concerned about getting the cleaner on the coil? It's not a self cleaning oven. It's kind of old. The heating element rests about a half inch above the oven floor, I can tip it up a bit, but can't take it out.
Asked by Horton - Tue Dec 9 06:11:19 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is best to keep the oven cleaner (caustic soda actually) off the heater coil. Aluminum foil is not the product to use as caustic will almost immediately attack it as you saw. I suggest you try a plastic food wrap film (e.g. Saran Wrap, Handi Wrap, Glad Wrap etc).

What is the proper way to put tin foil in the oven?
Q. Hello, I was cleaning my oven today and I threw out the tin foil that had been lining he bottom of our oven, now I was going to put in new foil, and I can't seem to remember if the shiny side was supposed to face the heating elements, or the dull side? I know there is technically no difference between the two (one side comes out shiny because of the way its manufactured), but I had read somewhere that the shiny side reflects more heat and wears out the elements... is this true? if you line your oven with foil, how do you do it? we've had foil in our oven for 2 years, cooking in it daily. our oven works perfectly fine. I just couldn't remember if it had to be shiny side up or not. or if it even made a difference! Thanks for all the… [cont.]

Aluminum foil stuck on the heating elements of my oven, what should I do?
Q. I just cleaned my oven. To prevent getting Easy Off on the heating elements, I wrapped them in aluminum foil, then I did the fast cleaning method (preheating the oven too 200 F, turned the oven off, sprayed the Easy Off, waited 5-10 minutes). When I went to clean the Easy Off off, it was stuck on the heating elements. What happened? And what can I do to fix it? (It will come off with steel wool, but if there's a better way, I'd like to know it)

Is $20 to clean a stove/oven fair?
Q. I work all the time and never have time to clean my oven anymore. It got to be where it had not been done in a year so I asked the 18 year old girl next door since she was out of work if she would clean it for $20 and told her it was bad and I would supply everything she needed.I paid her in advance since she needed the money.Well she cleaned it today I had aluminum foil down and it took her two hours but not working constantly on it cause she took many breaks which was fine but I walked outside one time to find her whining to my husband about how bad it is and she wants more money I hear him tell her he will get me to give her some extra money.I told him I'm not.Do you think what I paid her was fair?
Asked by Linda101 - Sat Sep 8 20:22:42 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes..it is fair... she probably does not work and gets everything she needs from parents or boy friends so does not quite understand the value of money nor the job associated with it. But let me ask... how long do you think it would have taken you? 1 hour? than $20 is plenty...tell her minimum wage and pay her by the hour.

how to keep an oven clean?
Q. i'm tired of cleaning my oven( non self-cleaning) after every time I use, I used aluminum foil but the manual says is not recomended, any suggestions??? my time is so valuable and I have better things to do
Asked by Clara - Sat May 23 01:47:34 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Constant maintenance is the secret for easy life! Use non-stick oven liner to protect the oven base from spills. Don't use aluminum foil as it can melt in high temperature and damage your oven. Wipe up spills right away. Clean your oven throughly immediately after each time you bake using soapy Scotch-Brite pat and damp cloth . This way you don't have to use corrosive chemicals. Treat oven trays the same way. Consider to hire an oven cleaning company once a year to clean the hidden parts of the oven. Remember, maintenance is the king! Don't ever let the grease build-up in your oven. If your oven is already heavily soiled please follow the cleaning procedure at:

What is the stupidest thing your roomate ever did?
Q. What was the dumbest thing your roomate ever did that just dumbfounded you beyond your imagination? Mine - Put 3 pieces of steak right on the oven without any pan or foil and when asked to clean it afterwards, turned on the oven cleaner and the sauce that dripped to the bottom bursted into flames, setting off the smoke alarm.

A. Hahaha.. well it wasn't my roomate, it was my brother. He put a fork and tin foil in the microwave. It shot out sparks, and the food caught on fire. So he put the fire out, and got some more food. He then put the food on a fresh peice of tin foil, washed the fork off, and placed it all back in the microwave. We no longer have that microwave..

How do I clean my used electric oven with Easy Off?
Q. I'm guessing I would need to cover the heating elements with aluminum foil before shaking and spraying the Easy Off and later wiping it off with paper towels.

A. Lesley is right on. I think it's on the bottle, make that final rinse with vinegar and water. Removes that last bit of oven cleaner film from the oven walls. The racks do better if you put them into a garbage bag along with several cups of household ammonia and let it sit overnight (I put it in the bathtub). By the next morning the crud is far easier to remove. Yeah, you can use Easy Off but I didn't like what it did to the chrome on the racks. If you need to "scrub" some tough areas on the oven, use Brillo or SOS pads. OF course you don't have a continuous clean oven...never use chemicals on those. They are different than a self cleaning oven.

A. Hi, I heard something about this last week on the TWIS (this week in science) Podcast, this guy named William Gurstelle (see website below) has written a book called "Backyard Ballistics" where he blows stuff up with ordinary materials you can buy in a store. I think it's relatively safe, but just make sure you have parental supervision and be careful not to lose any body parts (disclaimer.)

Tin foil heat question?
Q. Ok, so i covered a baking pan with tin foil so I wouldn't have to clean it after I was done. I noticed when I took it out of the oven that the tin foil itself cools down very quickly. Then I thought about how when you want to keep food warm (say, at a barbeque) you wrap it in foil. So, my question is this: How does something that loses heat so quickly keep heat in so well?
Asked by Brian "R" - Mon Apr 14 19:31:25 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Tin foil is reflective. It reflects a large portion of the heat energy that comes in contact with it. Like how the emergency space blankets work. Since it does not "absorb" energy (it does a little) it doesn't stay hot for real long.

Melted Aluminum Foil?
Q. I have a toaster oven, and I accidentally touched the top element with aluminum foil, and now it is stuck on the heating element! There's this nasty chemical smell every time I use the oven now. How can I clean this off?
Asked by Joseph S - Thu Sep 25 02:38:11 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well you have got yourself a real problem there. The melted metal is only removable when it is melted-i.e. HOT. When its cold its solid so if your element is of the solid bar type you can try to scrape off the deposit when its switched on and hot. Use a long tool with an insulated handle both to stop your hand getting burnt and to guard against any danger of electric shock. If you try to do it when the element is cold it will be nearly impossible. If your element is of the wound wire type (you don't say) you have the choice of ignoring it or throwing the element away and replacing it. Having thought further-you say there is a nasty chemical smell-well aluminium would not smell-I think you might have a polythene/aluminium foil substance-many [cont.]

How can I remove stains from a cookie sheet?
Q. The cookie sheet is Farberware and it is non-stick. I used it to cook/heat up various things in the oven and now it has brown stains on it. Any advice on how to clean it is appreciated. A. Get a scotch-brite non-scratch nylon sponge. It might come off it might not... I have some wearever bakeware that can go into the dishwasher.. The detergent takes off the stains.. I also bake using a SILPAT.. It's flexible glass and makes any cookie sheet non-stick. So, I use cheapie aluminum sheets I get for $3. Cover with the SILPAT and everything slides right off! It also cools quickly and can be used over and over.. Just don't cut on top of it... It will damage the finish. You can find SILPAT'S at TARGET, bed bath & BEYOND or the generic ones.. They work well! Aluminum foil depending on what you are cooking/baking can alter the bake times... Good luck

Baking brownies with aluminum foil?
Q. I'm trying a new brownie recipe for the holidays this year. My experiences with baking brownies is never good. After I've taken them out of the oven and let them cool, I can never get them out of the pan without them falling apart on me! Can I bake brownies in the pan if it's lined with aluminum foil? I think that may make them easier to get out. Also, the new recipe I'm trying is actually a cheater recipe that starts with devils food cake mix. These are going to be gifts for friends and coworkers, and I just want perfectly squared, clean brownies! Any tips or ideas?
Asked by Folky Veronica - Wed Dec 12 20:11:03 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Aluminum is an amazingly good conductor of heat. Which means that the bottom of the brownies will be burnt before the middles are done. I agree with others: try a parchment-paper-lined pan, or grease the pan well (use margarine spread with clean fingers or a spray), and then dust the pan with cocoa. Usually you would use flour, but that will leave a white residue on the brownies--the cocoa will blend in and actually add a bit more chocolate flavor. Or, dust with some of the cake mix before you mix up the batter. Also, be sure to let the brownies cool in the pan before you try to cut them.

Baked bread in 9x5 loaf pan, edges & top overly brown but center is gooey. Help!?
Q. I followed the directions for strawberry bread. Toothpick didn't come out clean, but the edges were getting VERY done. I took it out to cool, thinking it might set up, but it didn't. Try number two did the same thing. I've heard using foil tents might help, but didn't have much luck with that. Is my oven just too hot? I'm new to this bread thing. Should I try lower temp for longer? Any ideas?
Asked by TeacherIN - Sat Jul 19 16:02:15 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Are you using the correct rack placement in the oven? If you are using a glass pan I think you have to lower the oven temp by 25 degrees. Is your oven temp correct? A strawberry bread has quite a bit of sugar in it so it has a tendency to brown a bit more than some other breads. Bake the next one a bit longer and place a rim of foil around the edge of your pan. For this bread, since it is to late to put it back in the oven when you slice it put your slices in the toaster. I love toasted pound cake and banana bread. For a treat tomorrow morning try strawberry french toast. Doesn't that sound like a good breakfast? A little butter and jam on it...

Cleaning a gas grill? Soot builds up on the food and something smells a bit like plastic?
Q. I have a gas oven that heats my kitchen to 5 billion degrees when I use it in this hot summer weather :( ...I need to fix this grill! The rocks in the grill are a bit old and probably need to be replaced, but this all started when I replaced the 'guts' to the grill because they were rusted and falling apart. The first time I noticed it, soot (or something) built up on my chicken breast. I could take the spatula and scrap most of it off... it was slimey. Something smelled like plastic, but I thought maybe it was the new 'guts' breaking in or something. I ate the chicken... yeah I know, I shouldn't have. A. You are getting too much air. Is it LP or Natural gas you are using? Are the new parts for LP or Natural gas? The LP burners have large orifices than Natural Gas. Also, before the burner is a collar type sleeve that goes over the gas pipe going to the burner. It will have 1 or 2 holes on it. When the fire is on medium turn this collar to adjust the air to gas ratio. The flame will change color and size. Try for a nice blue flame with small yellow tips. Not a big orange flame. Replace the lava rock yearly and use more than you think you need. Good luck.
