In mathematics and other sciences, a formula (plural: formulas or formulae ) is a concise way of expressing information symbolically (as in a mathematical or chemical formula), or a general relationship between quantities. One of many famous formulae is Albert Einstein's E = mc (see special relativity).

In mathematics, a formula is a key to solve an equation with variables. For example, the problem of determining the volume of a sphere is one that requires a significant amount of integral calculus to solve. However, having done this once, mathematicians can produce a formula to describe the volume in terms of some other parameter (the radius for example). This particular formula is:

Having determined this result, and having a sphere of which we know the radius we can quickly and easily determine the volume. Note that the quantities V, the volume, and r the radius are expressed as single letters. This convention, while less important in a relatively simple formula, means that mathematicians can more quickly manipulate larger and more complex formulae.

In general mathematical use there is no essential difference in meaning with the term "expression", although the word "formula" tends to be reserved for an expression that "can stand on its own", that has a meaning outside of the immediate context in which it appears and a significance that can be grasped intuitively.

In a general context, formulae are applied to provide a mathematical solution for real world problems. Some may be general: F = ma, which is one expression of Newton's second law, is applicable to a wide range of physical situations. Other formulae may be specially created to solve a particular problem; for example, using the equation of a sine curve to model the movement of the tides in a bay. In all cases however, formulae form the basis for all calculations.

In a microsoft excel worksheet, is it possible to hide the formulae only?
Q. I would want a situation where if one opens the worksheet they can see the figures, but not the formulae behind the figures. Thank you. I would want to keep the worksheet as a shared worksheet, where others may be able to work with the entry of data to the cells from where the formulae links.

A. Right click on the cell that has the formulae, Select Format Cells, Choose Protection, Tick Hide. now this does not hide the cells until the worksheet is protected so first, if there are cells where input is required: Select all the cells that require data input by using mouse and CTRL key, then follow above for Protection but just Untick Locked. Finally, choose Tools from the menu, then Protection and Protect sheet, you will be given the chance to give a password or you can leave it blank. (Before adding any other information to your spreadsheet you will have to Unprotect it first)

In a shared microsoft excel worksheet, how can I stop others from changing formulae, yet still work with it?
Q. I would want others to be able to use the worksheet by way of posting new entries, but are not able to change the formulae I have formatted.

A. You can try the Protection options under Tools. First start by specifying which cells you want to be protected (locked). Anything that you'd want users to be able to change should be unlocked. Do this by highlighting the cells, then go to Format-Cells, and click on the Protection tab. Clear the Locked checkbox, then hit OK. Now to protect the sheet from changes, go to Tools-Protection-Protect Sheet. Clear the option for Select Locked Cells, and fill in a password if you wish. Hit OK, and test away. You should only be able to click and enter data in the cells you highlighted in the step above. If that works, then share the workbook and you should be set.
