Are fantasy books supposed to be formulaic?
Q. I like to read but the stories seem to be similar. In fantasy for example: seemingly average protagonist finds out he/she is not so average after all and can do magic OR is destined for something great. Good vs. evil. Bad guy is purely evil and has no redeeming qualities. Good guy beats bad guy in the end. World order is restored. Ending can be bittersweet: some major characters are killed off along the way. Do you know more "original" fantasy stories I can read?

A. You don't specify if you prefer teen oriented or adult fantasies. The teen stuff, at least what I have read, tends to go by the formula, unless it's vampires/witches/etc, which is a different formula. Fantasies for the adult market can be just as formulaic. (Terry Brooks, McKiernan, David Eddings, Goodkind have all made successful careers out of redoing the Tolkien formula not as well as Tolkien did it.) But they can also be quite varied. Here are some of my favorites: Little, Big (Crowley) - a strange and sometimes confusing fantasy, entirely unlike anything else you've read. The Darkover series (Bradley) - A long series with both fantasy and science fiction elements, in which a human colony on a distant planet, cut off from all off- [cont.]

why are manufactured bands/music so bland and formulaic? eg: the saturdays, girls aloud, and others ?
Q. I am very cynical about it all. A lot of music is so boring and has nothing distinctive about it. Why is it only young, thin, beautiful, barely dressed/heavy make up ,gyrating their bodies, seem to be in these bands. Does anyone actually buy their songs?? I am a grumpy old woman. Well i'm 26 Music was better when I was young!!!

A. Manufactured music is boring, dull, and stale because it is not driven by someones vision, talent, or passion. It is driven by a room full of producers and executives that are trying to emulate something that has sold records before. Music is best when an artist or band works on their craft by touring and living and struggling. Most of those bands never make it now-days because the music that is crammed down our throats now comes from reality tv shows and over-hyped pretty faces. As for the visual side of these bands you are talking about you can thank the impact of TV and videos for the change... Attractive people always have an edge but long gone are the days when you might hear an artist on the radio and have no idea whether they… [cont.]

Do Catholics ever give up on praying because the prayers are repetitive and formulaic?
Q. Not trying to offend, but I was just thinking that if one repeats the same prayers over and over, they might lose some or all of their meaning or importance to the one who is reciting them to God. I'm not intentionally being offensive. I am asking an honest question.
Asked by nowyouknow - Sat Oct 11 07:32:48 2008 - - 19 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No offence taken! Yes, some prayers may be repetitive or follow a formula. This happens not only in the Catholic Church but in all faiths, particularly in a service. It does not lose any meaning because of that and sometimes is more meaningful and important when thousands of people are saying the same prayers together. We don't give up on praying, and other times we pray to God in our own words and listen to Him too. God bless

How can I make my resume objective stand out?
Q. I've only written: To fulfill an internship that will provide me with invaluable experience in the marketing and publicity of feature films. That's really boring, and I have no idea how to keep it sounding professional but less formulaic. Basically I want an internship in the marketing department of a film production company of some sort. Any suggestions?

A. Now I did find the URL below that you can consult. However, and this is from the hiring point of view (10 years, too many resumes and positions to remember), I don't pay much attention to objectives. They're kind of like references to me - flowery and generally don't add much value. You can add in good terms like hard working, reliable and dependable. "To take the next step in my career goal by ..." You could use that. But let me say, I have never rejected someone because of a badly written objective, and I've never put someone in the "interview" pile because of a well written objective.

How would you find beauty in this passage?
Q. I need to analyze this passage and find some sort of beauty in it. A little help? "She steps insincerely out onto the false balcony, albeit a genuine need for air, party huddling behind her back, formulaic exchanges slipping under the floorboards meant to be astonished, meant to be flattered desperately inhaling deeply via a cigarette." Thanks!

A. It's beautiful to me because with everything that is going on, even with all the people behind her...that she is still so alone it seems. She seems maybe stressed about the situation and she is finding condolence in that cigarette. To me, the comfort and company of that cigarette is beautiful. Or not, maybe I totally misinterrpreted that whole thing.

How can i paint one of those pictures i see on ebay of film/rock stars or cool cars?
Q. They're normally two or three tone and obviously based on a photograph which has quite possibly been photoshopped. Do you need a projector or a light box? what's the technique? it's obviously fairly formulaic as there are a lot of artists out there with a similar product. I'd like to do make some similar pictures for my flat but i can't figure out the method.

Is there a browser game similar to Travian but not so warlike or negative?
Q. I've played Travian twice now and am getting bored of it. Its too warlike and everyday just seems like more of the same with very little scope for any co-operation. There war scenarios are boring and formulaic and alliances are very limited as to what they can actually do. Is there something similar but with less emphasis on war and maybe more emphasis on trade or exploration, or whatever? I'm easy.

What is the appeal of the Judd Apatow movies?
Q. They are terrible, the death of comedy films, very formulaic and juvenile and immature humor.

A. I think the appeal is they are funny on a base level, and people don't have to think too hard about them. There not "dumb comedies", but they aren't high art, either. At least, that would explain the ones I've seen.

Whas the opposite of a formulaic action shonen?
Q. What would you consider the exact opposite of a formulaic action shonen? Like, lets say a shonen series where the main character is a woman (not the "fan service bimbo" type) but a warrior...and she's actually the real "villian" but you don't find that out 'till midway in the story. There's no damsels in distress or power upgrades or fan service but action & unusual/unique story with rich character development. A decent action packed story that breaks the ropes of a sterotype shonen series by taking it to a higher level without the chiche'. (although formulaic action shonen series types aren't nessisarily a bad thing, to some extent) Anyway, those are my thoughts...so what do you think?

A. Well I would say the opposite of formulatic action shounen would be episodic romantic shoujo, lol. But that's not what you are getting at is it? Anyways, there's plenty of anime out there like what you described (Guardian of the Sacred Spirit and Kino's Journey comes to mind immediately)- you just got to find the lowkey anime series each season, and get away from Cartoon Network's lineup and you'll be golden. Getting away from the fanservice and especially finding an evil main character is the hardest part- but everything else is abundent if you just look.

What is your opinion on wrestlers with formulaic movesets having the best matches in?
Q. I was thinking back to watching HBK vs Cena all those times. And I was thinking that fans always exepect the wrestlers to hit their sig moves to set up for their finishers. People love to cheer for HBK to do his atomic drops, chops, backdrop, scoop slam, elbow drop and Sweet Chin Music, as do they for Cena with his shoulder tackles, clotheslines, back body drop, 5 Knuckle Shuffle, and Firemen's carry. These two wrestlers attempt to do the moves in one swoop, and the momentum in matches changes when these constant chains of offesense are interrupted. So having said that, these two countering each others signatures makes for longer, drawn out matches that are usually unpredictable. After all, we're supposed to believe that if HBK doesn't hit… [cont.]

A. Those are wierd questions to have removed, I agree, but I didn't see any aditional information the asker may have posted that may have been cause for removal. I think a lot of questions are removed because they are not meant as actual questions that people want answers too but are asked to start debate or express opinion. The Obama one may have been removed for that reason. But I have posted legitimate questions that could be considered reasons for dissent so you may have a point..either that or the moderates don't pay attention to questions that get reported and just remove them without looking at content.

Women grow up with fairytale fantasies of finding Mr. Right and having a beautiful wedding day and living happily ever after. Men fantasize about sweeping a beautiful woman off her feet and sailing off into the sunset together. Sometimes I have to question why someone's "soul mate" has to be… [cont.]

A. I agree with your point about meaningless casual sex being rampant in our society, but I've never considered a platonic friend as a soul mate. I don't even like to use the term "soul mate"; I think a lot of younger females overuse it because it romanticizes the relationship they have. In most cases, it's just their ignorance and inexperience showing. My husband and I are each other's best friend. We know each other inside and out and are committed to encouraging, supporting and loving each other unconditionally. Sex is an important part of the relationship because it's the most intimate and revealing expression of love that you can have with another individual. Because we know each other so intimately and so well (and choose to… [cont.]
