why are manufactured bands/music so bland and formulaic? eg: the saturdays, girls aloud, and others ?
Q. I am very cynical about it all. A lot of music is so boring and has nothing distinctive about it. Why is it only young, thin, beautiful, barely dressed/heavy make up ,gyrating their bodies, seem to be in these bands. Does anyone actually buy their songs?? I am a grumpy old woman. Well i'm 26 Music was better when I was young!!!

A. Manufactured music is boring, dull, and stale because it is not driven by someones vision, talent, or passion. It is driven by a room full of producers and executives that are trying to emulate something that has sold records before. Music is best when an artist or band works on their craft by touring and living and struggling. Most of those bands never make it now-days because the music that is crammed down our throats now comes from reality tv shows and over-hyped pretty faces. As for the visual side of these bands you are talking about you can thank the impact of TV and videos for the change... Attractive people always have an edge but long gone are the days when you might hear an artist on the radio and have no idea whether they… [cont.]

What is a formulaic action shonen series?
Q. Like, what would you consider a stereotype shonen series? Such as the protogonist male lead & female lead who usually accompanies the "hero", what are their stereotype personalities? As well as the antogonist & his/her "evil goal". I know it's alota questions, but I'm curious as to what determines a formulaic action shonen series, & how to reverse the sterotype when creating my own shonen manga. (In case you may not know, "shonen" means manga/anime for boys- typically has high action.)

The dumb girl who isn't really any use to the the team. When he's fighting alot of people, there's no depth. Yet when it's one on one, the other character has some amazing backstory. And of course, the crazy bad guy who got "steered from the path of justice" and used to be taught by an extremely powerful warrior. What to do during the day in Amsterdam for stag do?
Q. Going on a stag do to Amsterdam in May but the best man is having trouble finding day-time activities for a group of 4 of us (the night-time activities are sorted...) - anyone got any ideas? All the sterotypical stag-do things are minimum number of people around 6 upwards. So thinking we might have to go with something 'alternative', not necassarily drink or drug related (far too formulaic!)

A. Boat tour in old Dutch boats: take an insider's tour of the Red Light District with Rob van Hulst: 020-6245720 or info@robvanhulst.nl ask him about bicycling in Marken, Volendam, Monnickendam, or another short half-day or day trip to get out of Amsterdam. Mike's Bikes (Lijnbaans-gracht 302a, E9), a fun, reliable company, that also has internet facilities. They also give daily tours of the city and surrounding areas in the warmer months. drink a beer at De Gooier, a windmill that is now a brewery and bar. Address Funenkade, tram 10. Check out for more good stuff. Why is network TV so formulaic?
Q. Why is every show on CBS a detective show or a formulaic sitcom with the same plot passed from show to show? I read that formulaic shows are encouraged by network execuitives and that people who think outside the box are discarded. Seinfeld was almost thrown out. Are Americans really THAT stupid? Whas the opposite of a formulaic action shonen?
Q. What would you consider the exact opposite of a formulaic action shonen? Like, lets say a shonen series where the main character is a woman (not the "fan service bimbo" type) but a warrior...and she's actually the real "villian" but you don't find that out 'till midway in the story. There's no damsels in distress or power upgrades or fan service but action & unusual/unique story with rich character development. A decent action packed story that breaks the ropes of a sterotype shonen series by taking it to a higher level without the chiche'. (although formulaic action shonen series types aren't nessisarily a bad thing, to some extent) Anyway, those are my thoughts...so what do you think?

A. Well I would say the opposite of formulatic action shounen would be episodic romantic shoujo, lol. But that's not what you are getting at is it? Anyways, there's plenty of anime out there like what you described (Guardian of the Sacred Spirit and Kino's Journey comes to mind immediately)- you just got to find the lowkey anime series each season, and get away from Cartoon Network's lineup and you'll be golden. Getting away from the fanservice and especially finding an evil main character is the hardest part- but everything else is abundent if you just look.

How does Danielle Steele outline her novels?
Q. And what do you think about her writing style? Many people I know seem to think that her stories "run together", and are formulaic. But I have read nearly two of her novels and think she is pretty good. (Daddy and Five Days in Paris).

A. All stories are a quest. So, in essence, all stories are formulaic. I think Danielle Steele gets branded as a formulaic writer because many of her stories are told similarly. Does she have a blog? She might discuss how she creates her stories. In the meantime, learn about what a quest is and how it's related to storytelling.

A. Hey, no one said you had to follow the crowd...Live your life the way you want...Some people choose to get married because it is a sign of their committment to and love for one another and there's absolutely nothing wrong with spending your life with the person you love. I agree people may enter into marrige a bit too hastily and immaturely today. Another thing...your life has not been written for you nor has it ended, when you marry. And if you feel this way, then obviously marriage isn't for you.

Does life seem to be more like a movie (in other words, formulaic) with the more philosophizing you do?
Q. I look around and it seems like everyone fits a role in a movie but sometimes the audacity of some people's actions makes me wonder whether they wake up everyday not even thinking about the past or the future and just living every minute off of basic instinct. I'm not saying it's necessarily a negative thing--in fact, choosing to be simple when being complex gets tired feels like the reward for all of the philosophizing I do--but it does contrast with spending time to recognize the significance of every aspect.

There are a number of freelance web design forums you can place a project on and receive bids. Some designers are trying to build a portfolio and others are trying to get their foot in the door, so they offer some services at more reasonable rates than commercial web design firms. Have you read "The Kite Runner," and what did you think?
Q. I was underwhelmed. I don't know where I got the idea that this was literature. It was just some formulaic hack writing. I did learn a few things about Afghanistan's culture so it was not a complete waste.

A. Yeah it was far from a literature work that will be recognized for hundreds of years but it was interesting and like you said it gave an interesting insight to Afghan culture.

How can I inspire my boyfriend to be sexier and more sensuous instead of machanical and crude?
Q. My sweetheart was full blown alchie from age 14 or 15 untill about five yrs ago. He is now 49. Clearly he has matured little during all those drunk years and his sexual style reflects it. How can i inspire him to try being sexxier and more seductive and less crude and formulaic?

Buy or Sell: Xzhibit was the Ludacris of the west coast?
Q. They both released very formulaic records (1/3 fight songs, 1/3 sex songs, 1/3 party songs). They both weren't good enough to love, but weren't wack enough to hate. They both lost their spark after their first few albums.

Do you like Weezer's new album? How about the single?
Q. I think it's foul myself. I'm a fan of a few of their old songs. This new stuff is trash, their old stuff may have been just as formulaic but at least it sounded like THEY thought it was inspired.

A. It's terrible, man. Pinkerton and The Blue Album was great, but everything since has been trash. The Single is better than I expected, but I wasn't expecting much.
