A. Usually, coal burns by C + O2 --> CO2 If insufficient oxygen is present, then the coal burns by 2C + O2 --> 2CO In an industrial burner there is often additional oxygen present so that the CO can burn by 2CO + O2 --> 2CO2 There is not enough information in your question to tell whether there is sufficient oxygen present to burn your C all to CO2, or to leave some of it as CO. A small furnace would burn the coal slowly, while a large one would burn it quickly. There is no information on your question that would indicate how to calculate rate.

A. 13x+2=24x^2 0 = 24x^2 - 13x - 2 x = [-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)]/2a a = 24 b = -13 c = -2 Now, just substitute x = [-(-13) +/- sqrt((-13)^2 - 4(24)(-2))]/2(24) x = [13 +/- sqrt(169 + 192)]/48 x = [13 +/- sqrt(361)]/48 x = (13 + sqrt(361))/48, which is 2/3 x = (13 - sqrt(361))/48, which is -1/8
