Is it necessary to have steel / metal framing in a replacement vinyl window?
Q. We're getting ready to replace our existing aluminum windows. Two different company's have told us that it is better to have a vinyl replacement window which has a steel framing in the structure so the vinyl can't buckle over time (i.e. Polybau and Window World). Is it really necessary to have this metal framing in the structure or does it depending on the size of the window? We have one very large window, 120" width x 60" height which I would find this to be very important in the long run. If it is recommended, can anyone recommend other brands with great NFRC ratings that have metal framing in the vinyl windows structure besides the two I have already listed? I am in Northern California, so please keep in mind available brands.… [cont.]

Framing a roof for a carport?
Q. I am planning a rather large carport to build over this summer, which will cover my boat and provide two extra parking spots. Total size will be in the neighborhood of 26 feet wide by 30 feet long. I need some pointers on spacing the framing for the rafters - do I use 16 inch on center or can I go to 24 inch OC since it's a carport?
Asked by Pete R - Thu Feb 22 12:40:52 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What the hell are these people talking about? 26 foot spans? I'd like to see you find a 26' long piece of lumber in any dimension. 2x12 rafters? Is he kidding? You don't use 2x12s for floor joists, for Christ's sake. For a 26' long (deep) shed roof (sloped from front to back in a straight line), you'd need at least one beam running perpendicular to the rafters. If the roof decking is plywood and shingles, you would have to use 2x10s to span 13'. For a lathe and metal roof, you would use 2x8s, both on 16" centers. No matter what size lumber you are using, it will all sag over a 13' span. The lumber will sag under its own weight. If you put in two beams, you're only spanning about 8 1/2 feet; you can use 2x6s on 16" or 2x8s on 24". If… [cont.]

Do you recommend professional inspection of framing for a new construction that is 2 storey?
Q. Hi, we have bought a house in a new community. The house is a week away from completion of framing. Do you recommend professional inspection of the framing?
Asked by kkazb - Sat Jul 25 19:07:31 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Buildings with unique structural features should be checked by the architect or engineer to confirm that they have been built according to the design/load calculations before the structure is covered up. More straightforward buildings are less critical but should still be given an inspection. Simple things like electrical wiring holes that are too close to the edge of a stud put the wire in danger of being penetrated by drywall screws, plumbing holes that are too large could weaken the structure (not usually resulting in failure, but could cause sagging over time which leads to cracks in the plaster or windows that don't operate properly), fire code compliance for chimneys and mechanical, verification that framing meets egress standards… [cont.]

Would it be a lot more expensive to build a house using post & beam or timber framing?
Q. I asked a question before about barn conversions, but it sounds like it could be more trouble than what it would be worth. Although, I still love the look of the post & beam and timber framing. Would the price of materials for post & beam or timber framing be more expensive than materials for stick framing?
Asked by country.girl - Wed Mar 19 09:41:39 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, post and beam or timber framing is more expensive and there are limited people who contract to build homes in that style. Assuming you are talking about the inside look, you can still get the look of post and beam if you choose to. It would add some to the cost but not to the extent of a full post and beam house. I would think there are all ready plans with this look available but you may have to spend some time looking for them. Of course you can also hire a someone to do that kind of interior design for you.

what type of air compressor do I need to run two roofing nailers or one framing nailer?
Q. I currently have a large framing nailer and a finish nailer. I will be putting a roof on this summer as well. I am wondering what type of air compressor will be the best for this.
Asked by Ryan - Thu May 17 14:24:31 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just a small portable "pancake" compressor. Available for purchase at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. But, you may want to just rent one from HomeDepot, or another rental shop in your area. Besure to also get at least 100 feet of air hose that will interface with both gun and compressor.

A. I don't really know what a framing carpenter makes here in Texas but I would be willing to bet it is nowhere near what one makes in California. The cost of living in Texas isn't as high as in California either so that should be taken in to consideration when looking at the wage differences. I would contact the carpenters union to see what information they could give you. Of course, the housing market is not so hot these days. Good luck!

A. I actually have some pictures of the puzzle I framed if you would like to see them. My puzzle was odd shaped also and so I went to Hobby Lobby and found a frame that was a couple inches larger on each side. Then I bought a piece of matting that matched the color of my puzzle and cut it to fit the frame. I then glued my puzzle in the center of this matting and placed it in the frame and it looks great. I can't remeber exactly but I believe the frame that I used was 28"x22". Also, you probably already know this but before you frame your puzzle make sure you go to the hobby store and pick up the puzzle sealer to make sure your puzzle stays together while framed. I will upload my puzzle and post a link on here for you to view. Here are… [cont.]

Does a steel beam used in residential framing have camber, and is it required to be placed with the camber up?
Q. I have a condition in which a 23'-0 steel I beam that was used in a house during framing has, what appears to be, deflection of 1 inch or so. The steel supplier however, has indicated that the beam was incorrectly installed with the camber down. I personally have never heard of such a thing. Has anyone experienced this before? Is there really a top side on a steel I beam?
Asked by R S - Wed Jun 11 19:33:13 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. being a residential carpenter i would suggest that maybe the beam was underated for the load and span or bad material as stated in one of the answers. altough some steel beams may have a camber (truck beds, semi truck beds), i personally have never seen cambered steel beam used in residential construction as this would place high point in the floor (assuming the beam is in the floor or the floor joist sit atop). from personal experience i have seen a steel beam bow down during installation in a remolding project a few years back, but this was a small 6" high beam. the only time a steel beam would have a pre-set top or bottom, would be when the lower flange is wider than the top to act as a lintel for masonry or for the floor joist to… [cont.]

How do I reset/change framing on my Panasonic HDTV?
Q. I have a wall mount HDTV, well my parents do, and when i plug in the dvd player into the jack's on the front the framing is completely off, with a black bar on the right side, and the screen disappearing on the left, tried other dvd players, same thing, so i know it's the tv. Is there a way to reset it? I don't know what the model number is since it's not my tv. Thanks in advance.!

A. What are these jacks on the front? Composite (yellow), S-Video? Do you use the correct output out of the DVD? Looks like a sync problem, most common to PCs than DVD players. Make sure the output picture setting of the player is set to 16:9. (not 4:3).

Q. I would like to find out how to go about fixing a new mirror to a tiled bathroom wall. I just have a piece of mirrored glass and wonder whether I should fix the glass to the wall first and then surround it with the timber framing, OR assemble the mirror with framing first and then fix to the wall. Thanks for any ideas.

A. You would be better of building a frame then hang it.Unless its a large mirror you can go to a glass shop or DIY bath dept and get clips be sure to use anchors depending on size, because you've seen mirrors above bars and bathroom sinks and powder rooms,if your going thru tile be sure to predrill thru the grout then use anchors.

Does anyone know what the black stuff growing on wood (construction framing) is?
Q. I am building a house and noticed that there are black stuff growing sporadically throughout the wood framing within the house. It is growing more and more prevalent. What is it? Is it harmful if allergic to mildew/mold? How can I clean it or remove it from the wood? Did my contractor use substandard wood? Is this common in home construction? I do not want to put up the sheet rock and walls until I understand what this is. My contractor told me not to worry but I fear he's hiding something.
Asked by Iwant2know - Sun May 20 23:04:47 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would certain think that it is some type of mold; I certainly wouldn't want it inside my walls. I have never seen it in another home under construction, and I've seen quite a few, as I used to work for a building inspector in Texas. I would not necessarily take the contractors word that "everything is ok." He has nothing to gain by telling you, and everything to lose by having to replace the 2x4s. Talk with someone who sells wood in your area - preferably someone in a lumber yard that's been there a while - and ask what, if any, wood treatment is commonly used in your area. I have a suspicion that if it's normally damp in your area, something should be in use, or the wood should have been pre-treated.

A. Here is my two cents, I get great enjoyment from doing general contracting work ( framing, masonry, painting, tiling, etc.) but I do not have the drive anymore to start my own business even though the money would be much better, I prefer to work with many different contractors to do the work that I enjoy. If you have the drive and enjoy the business go for it.

A. I worked at a framing store once and I know that custom framing is not inexpensive any custom framing place that you go to will tell you the same thing. You could try to do it yourself by buying a ready-made mat and frame and assemble it at home. you won't find anything cheaper than this. custom framing has always been expensive, even online.
