Will my Gateway Microsoft program discs work on a new and different computer?
Q. Or do I need to buy them again? I had a Gateway with all of the Microsoft Office stuff and I noticed you had to type in a long number which leads me to believe it won't work with a new computer. Or will it?
Asked by Life is Good - Thu Dec 3 11:11:42 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most programs require you to type in a really long number. it's called a serial number and it's supposed to make sure that you didn't illegally download the software, although it doesn't really work very well. It will probably work in another computer (after all, any computer can read a disc provided it has the right type of disc player.) It certainly can't do any damage. I would throw it in and see what happens.

What is the difference between drugs and gateway drugs?
Q. It there a difference? What are drugs and what are gateway drugs? I need this for school so please help me. Also I need some examples of drugs and gateway drugs!
Asked by kittykat - Sat Dec 29 12:11:05 2007 - - 14 Answers - 3 Comments
A. The definition of a gateway drug is a lower class drug that leads people to try more "hard drugs". The most common example is marijuana/cannabis. The current propaganda that's going around states that if you do marijuana you're more likely to do something like coke or heroin or another of the "hard drugs". What they don't tell you is how many people smoke marijuana who NEVER do any harder drugs. Of course people who use drugs are going to start small and work their way up. It doesn't mean that people can't use the less harmful, non-addictive drugs responsibly. Off my soap-box now. I hope the link below helps you with your research.

How do i assign a default gateway for my internet connection?
Q. today, i stuffed the internet connection on my computer, all the other connections on the other computers work fine (using netgear modem), but i know what my problem is, my internet gateway icon isnt coming up in network connections & in ipconfig in cmd it hasnt got a default gateway address, so can anyone help me? how do i assign the gateway? ive got the gateway address, i just don't know how to assign it! :( thanks in advance! please help me!

A. The default gateway address is assigned by DHCP. If your computer is using this method to get an IP and it isn't getting a gateway, then the router is not doing it's job and needs to be checked. To manually set a default gateway, you will also have to assign a static IP address and DNS server address to the computer. To do this on either XP or Vista, you will need to go to the Control Panel (getting here is different for each) and select the Network Connections applet. Choose your internet interface (assuming you may have more than one listes) and right-click and select properties. This will open the connection properties sheet. In the list of items installed you will select Internet Protocol (IPv4 on Vista) and again click the properties.… [cont.]

How do you reformatt a Gateway laptop that came with no disk ?
Q. Well, I have a Gateway laptop that is stuck in safe mode and I just want to reformatthe damn thing. However, I bought it online and it didn't come with a disk. Can I still reformat it and how ?
Asked by Sasha - Wed Aug 26 19:17:17 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. All recent laptops (and desktops for that matter) have no installation disk but come with a "Recovery" partition (usually named "D"). The better way to find out about your system is as follows: 1) Go here: 2) Enter you serial number in the middle window. You will have your personalized information to help you. Hope this helps

What is the difference between a gateway and a router?
Q. I have the Verizon DSL connection and am fed up with the wires. I need a device, either a gateway or router( Idont know which one) to make it wireless.
Asked by KR - Mon Mar 12 15:50:07 2007 - - 5 Answers - 3 Comments
A. The difference is basically that a gateway is one to one and a router is many to many. Companies like to call things routers when they are only really gateways, so the distinction is being lost over time. I use a D-Link DI-624, it works for me but some have had issues with it.

What all do I need besides a processing gateway to accept credit card payments?
Q. I have a business checking account, and I have a paypal account, but I'm also wanting to get a gateway. I've heard about needing a merchant account as well, but is this in addiction to a checking account? If I do need a merchant account, what are the costs of getting one, and any recommendations as to where to get one? Would this provide everything I needed?

A. The link you provided would do everything you need. The rates and fees are average so you won't be getting screwed and the company is very large so you know they aren't going to be going away any time soon. If you are looking for someone to do everything for you then this would be a wise choice. If you wanted to see if you can do better, and that is possible, you can shop around and see what other companies have to offer. I've linked to a worksheet that will make comparing competitors easy for you do to as well as some educational material. Look at the rates in that link you provided. Don't even consider any rates higher then that. Try to make sure you do not get charged a monthly minimum fee and also do your best to find a month-to-month [cont.]

How to have two network gateways so that one gateway handles incoming connections and the other does outgoing?
Q. I have a network and want to use one gateway for incoming connections and another gateway for outgoing connections. Unfortunately the machines only respond to the incoming gateway if that gateway is set as its default route. Shouldn't I be able to use both gateways? In the logs of the destination machine I see the connection attempt via the incoming gateway but the return packet does not go back to the incoming gateway, so I guess it is going through the other gateway (the one that's the default route). A. As you do not control the networks involved, you are going to have a hard time doing this. Better to do some simple loadsharing by routing some of the traffic to the alternate router.

How can I find my gateway laptop's serial number if it rubbed off?
Q. I want to use the free upgrade to windows 7. This requires the serial number, which rubbed off. The laptop is a gateway NV52, how can i find the serial number?

A. Some computers keep a copy of the serial number stored in CMOS, along with the BIOS parameters. Go into "Setup" during boot (not sure how you do that on a Gateway) and take a close look. Or you might find it in "Control Panel" | "System", on one of the tabs.

What is the difference between a Gateway and a Modem?
Q. Layman terms please. I am wanting to buy a Laptop (my first) and do not know much about them. I will switch from Satelite Internet to AT&T DSL. They are asking do I want a modem or Gateway. Which do I need for one computer - desktop and one laptop?

A. Get a modem and then a router. The modem converts the signal so the computer will understand it and the router takes that signal and intelligently distributes it to the computers on your home network. It's very easy to set up.
