A. If you are talking about speaker wire then 12ga. would be plenty big enough. That's what i have mine hooked up with.

what gauge wire do you need to install an electric oven?
Q. It's an old GE electric oven, 40-amps according to the manual, and I was trying to figure out what gauge of wire to use in the walls since I have to install a new circuit. oh, and does anyone know where to get 8 or 6 gauge wire? I haven't been able to find it on any home improvement store website.

I am using 12 and14 gauge wire. How many receptacle outlets can I run on that same wire?
Q. I plan on running 20 amp 12 and 14 gauge wire for refrigerator, AC etc. How many outlets can I run on one wire. i.e. should I use a one wire for every 3 outlets?
Asked by greatest - Fri Apr 20 08:40:48 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. to figure this you need to remerber the total load of all receptacles on one circuit cannot exceed 15 amps for #14 wire or 20amps for #12 wire...add total amps of what load you will have on each receptacle circuit...once it adds up to 13 or 17 amps depending on size of wire make this one circuit...usually every outlet in one room can be on one circuit or wire...refrigerator should have its own circuit...ac should have its own circuit

Whats the difference between 8 gauge wire?
Q. Okay I have a question I have an 8 gauge wire kit and it says 350 watts peak. What the difference when there is the same 8 gauge wire that says 800 watts peak does this really matter? Thanks guys I mean wire is wire right?
Asked by joe - Sun Jul 20 02:29:14 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. wrong wire is not wire. the gauge is the size of wire but the material and insulation determine the wattage it is capapble of carrying. cheap wire carries less current than non-cheap wire does.

What gauge wire would I use to run it 500ft from power source?
Q. I need to know what gauge wire would I need to run a wire 500 feet from the main power source (outdoor) on a farm? I would need it to run common items such as wood working equiptment, etc. Any ideas???
Asked by A_Ash_A - Tue Dec 2 20:57:24 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would run 6 gauge to its own sub panel. Anything smaller would over heat and lose power over that distance.

What is the best way to strip 10 gauge wire?
Q. I have about 250 feet of 10 gauge wire to strip down and scrap, and in my reasonable collection I don't have any 10 gauge wire strippers.
Asked by futzbrown - Sun Jun 29 12:01:42 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. dont worry about stripping it. for that long of length it would not be worth your time to strip it for a little more money. dont burn it. not only is it illegal to burn the insulation off, because it is plastic, the scrap yard will give you the same amount for burned wire than it would for insulated wire.

Does speaker wire gauge make a noticeable difference?
Q. I bought some new floor speakers and they came with cheapo spaghetti-sized wire (like 24 gauge). I hooked them up and they sound pretty decent. Would I hear a noticeable difference switching to 16 gauge wire, and what kind of differences would I notice? Thanks for your time.
Asked by Art Vandelay - Tue Jan 8 18:36:29 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It can make a difference, mainly in longer runs. Keep into consideration, most gauge wire is in multiple fine strands, whereas some (mostly in high-end cables) are solid core. In a basic sense, the smaller the gauge (again, in longer runs), the more resistance the cable will have between the speaker and amplifier. A critical ear can hear this, as the music will sound more restricted -less of a sense of ease. If you want to avoid the whole thing, some have recommended going down to your local hardware store and getting some inexpensive heavy-gauge power cord wire. Happy listening!

How do you determine correct wire gauge for wiring an inground pool pump?
Q. I am installing an inground pool with an automated control panel that controls the pump, gas heater, lights, etc. The panel is approximately 100 feet from my home and I need to figure out what gauge wire to use for this project and whether to use underground wire or standard wire and pcv conduit. I appreciate any help.
Asked by brirush72 - Tue Apr 25 15:14:25 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Since its a 100 foot run and a 50 amp subpanel, I would run 6 AWG/GAUGE wire, to cover for the voltage drop, resistance and for grounding the pool. I would recommend usings stranded wire (easier to pull in pipe)that has "TW" for insualtion meaning it can get wet. I would use PVC its cheap and it will save you in the long run down the road if you ever need to run more or different size wires in the pipe out to the pool panel..If you use pvc check your local codes for depths, expansion joints are required and what schedule PVC to use.. Also since its such a long run I would upsize the pipe so pulling the wires isnt so hard. Since you would need four conductors , two hots(red and black), a neutral (white) and a ground(usually green), I would… [cont.]

A. compare prices. remember you are going to need a 0 gauge fuse holder at the battery. sometimes the wire and the fuse holder cost as much as the whole kit.

How many watts rms can 8 gauge wire handle?
Q. I have 2 Soundstream 12" subs (4ohm dvc 350 rms each wired in a 1ohm configuration) to a Soundstream PCX1000d amp 1000 rms @ 1ohm. It sounds good but i was wondering if i should upgrade the 8 gauge wire (planet audio wire) to a 4 gauge. How many watts can 8gauge wire handle? Also when i pump the volume high the amp goes in protect mode. Could the 8gauge wire be the problem? thanks.

A. id use at least a 10 or a 12 gage wire on it this way it wont over heat the wire none, usually you wont have no problems from those if you use a 12 gage wire with it,it should have came with directions of what sized wire to use on it,good luck.

What gauge wire should I use for a 50 amp breaker?
Q. Hello, I am trying to figure out which gauge wire I should use. I am looking at this and it sounds like gauge 10 copper would be more than enough. I am not sure what the difference between "Maximum amps for chassis wiring Maximum amps for power transmission" these two categories. Does 10 sound like a safe bet or should I go with 8? Thanks!
Asked by Freedom - Thu Aug 27 13:48:02 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 10 gauge is not enough. 10 is only legal up to 30 amps. For a 50 amp breaker you need 6 gauge.

A. 4 gauge is too small for a 2400w amp. seriously go with a 0awg wire. and with that big of an amp you might also need to do some work with your charging system. invest in an optima yellowtop, and maybe a high output alternator. you might also want to add a capacitor. stinger has a good 15 or 30 farad hybrid capacitor that does really well to maintain constant voltage over 12v.

Q. I just bought 0 gauge wire for my car but I do not have any tools to stripe or crimp the wire.
Asked by Nick C - Wed Feb 4 14:47:30 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. To strip the wire you can use a box cutter to cut the insulation off, just be careful not to cut the copper wire out. And wire that big i usually solder the terminals on. Although big set of crimpers would do the job.

How do i know what gauge wire to choose to wire my amp with..?
Q. I've just got an infinity 611a 650W, so how do i know what gauge wire to use..? I have some run in my car at the moment, but the guy i got it from said its to big and it'll fry the amp Also, does higher gauge mean it carries more or less current..? Thanks alot.
Asked by Josh - Wed Nov 19 00:17:04 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. the lower the guage number, the larger the wire, the more current that wire can handle. having too large of a wire is never a problem unless it doesn't fit in the wire terminal. if your wire is too small it will burn up and possibly cause a fire. so a 16 guage wire is much smaller than an 8 guage wire, and carries a lot less current. having too much wire isn't a problem because the amount of current that goes through it depends on how much the alternator has to give, and how much the amp demands. so if your wire can keep up with the current demand, then you don't have a problem. whoever told you that your wire was too big, just disregard that information.

Asked by armando112007 - Wed May 14 22:07:33 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. it depends on the amp that you have. the bigger your amp, the bigger power wire you will need. don't go and spend $200 on a 0 ga amp kit if you don't need it. and if you do need it, its not hard to find either, any audio shop will have it, and if they don't have it, they shouldn't be called an audio shop. 8 ga wire is good for most amps up to 400 watts rms, 4 will do for most amps up to 1000 watts rms, most amps bigger than that will need 0 ga wire. these are rms power ratings, not to be confused with irrelevant max power ratings.
