Geometry (Ancient Greek: γεωμετρία; geo = earth, metria = measure) is a part of mathematics concerned with questions of size, shape, relative position of figures and with properties of space. Geometry is one of the oldest sciences. Initially a body of practical knowledge concerning lengths, areas, and volumes, in the third century BC geometry was put into an axiomatic form by Euclid, whose treatment—Euclidean geometry—set a standard for many centuries to follow. The field of astronomy, especially mapping the positions of the stars and planets on the celestial sphere, served as an important source of geometric problems during the next one and a half millennia. A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a geometer. Introduction of coordinates by René Descartes and the concurrent development of algebra marked a new stage for geometry, since geometric figures, such as plane curves, could now be represented analytically, i.e., with functions and equations. This played a key role in the emergence of calculus in the 17 century. Furthermore, the theory of perspective showed that there is more to geometry than just the metric properties of figures. The subject of geometry was further enriched by the study of intrinsic structure of geometric objects that originated with Euler and Gauss and led to the creation of topology and differential geometry. Since the 19 century discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, the concept of space has undergone a radical transformation. Contemporary geometry considers manifolds, spaces that are considerably more abstract than the familiar Euclidean space, which they only approximately resemble at small scales. These spaces may be endowed with additional structure, allowing one to speak about length. Modern geometry has multiple strong bonds with physics, exemplified by the ties between Riemannian geometry and general relativity. One of the youngest physical theories, string theory, is also very geometric in flavour. The visual nature of geometry makes it initially more accessible than other parts of mathematics, such as algebra or number theory. However, the geometric language is also used in contexts that are far removed from its traditional, Euclidean provenance, for example, in fractal geometry, and especially in algebraic geometry. I have a Geometry paper to write on how Geometry can be applied and used in the profession you plan to pursue. I would like to study law and pursue a career as a lawyer and eventually somewhere in politics, but I'm kind of stuck on this topic. Any so I ask, how can Geometry be applied and used in a law and/or political profession. Asked by Adum - Thu Feb 19 16:23:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Because it teaches you to think absolutely rigorously about proof. What is proof? How to move through a proof logically. Missing out on no steps. Answered by CanProf - Thu Feb 19 16:27:27 2009 What's the difference between VSEPR geometry and shape? Q. My chem homework has two questions: 1. Predict the VSEPR geometries around the N atoms in ammonia 2. Predict the shapes around the N atoms in ammonia. I thought geometry and shape were the same thing? Asked by Hannah - Tue Nov 3 15:57:34 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. No, they're different. Water for example has two non-bonding pairs of electrons. Its shape is "bent". Ammonia (NH3) is "trigonal pyramid", and methane (CH4) is "tetrahedral", all different shapes with the same electronic configuration. Just to be clear, "geometry" refers to the position of electron pairs in space, "shape" refers to the position of atoms. Q. Hey guys. I am choosing my thesis subject, and i'm looking for something with no relation with geometry. I don't like geometry. Asked by samiralu - Tue Sep 22 12:40:26 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Try modern algebra...there is not much in it...like Lie Groups or Group Theory...my question is How can you write a topic on mathematics without geometry? I suggest that you bone up on that subject before you write your thesis...just a friendly suggestion. Answered by phoenix - Tue Sep 22 12:51:11 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "geometry" |
