What's the difference between regular geometry and analytical geometry?
Q. Is analytical geometry an easier or harder version of regular geometry? I'm a freshman in high school and got into analytical geometry. What are the main differences?
Asked by :] - Mon Aug 17 01:45:41 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think the analytical geometry is the coordinate geometry where we use the distance formula, midpoint formula, and coordinate graphs.

Looking for a good geometry curriculum- What do you like or not like about the ones you have used?
Q. We use Saxon and love it. I know geometry is included in Algebra 1 & 2, but my daughter is planning on majoring in engineering and most colleges require a separate geometry class. She is in Algebra one now, we want to do geometry over the summer so we can get through calc in highschool. She is currently in 8th grade.

A. I seem to lean toward Saxon. Saxon is THE curriculum when it comes to geometry. You can only love it. I tell you what, if I had to choose one curriculum to spend my life with, it would be Saxon hands down. btw do they have it in mint flavor? Also if you ever have any free time, don't hesitate to email me explaining what on earth Saxon is.

What's the difference between VSEPR geometry and shape?
Q. My chem homework has two questions: 1. Predict the VSEPR geometries around the N atoms in ammonia 2. Predict the shapes around the N atoms in ammonia. I thought geometry and shape were the same thing?
Asked by Hannah - Tue Nov 3 15:57:34 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No, they're different. Water for example has two non-bonding pairs of electrons. Its shape is "bent". Ammonia (NH3) is "trigonal pyramid", and methane (CH4) is "tetrahedral", all different shapes with the same electronic configuration. Just to be clear, "geometry" refers to the position of electron pairs in space, "shape" refers to the position of atoms.

Q. Is it possible for truly motivated 8th grade students wanting to expand their mathematical horizons, to take geometry over the summer at a college. DeAnza? U.C. Berkeley? Stanford?

What is the difference between geometry and trigonometry?
Q. This school year, I am going to take geometry and trigonometry at the same time. There would be a huge possibility that my teacher would ask this question. Besides, I don't understand anything.
Asked by anyamaddie - Wed Jun 4 12:02:35 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Having taught both topics, I don't think there should be a problem doing both at the same time providing that they are basic courses. Trigonometry is about working out the sizes of angles or the lengths of lines from one another. Geometry if more about whether angles and lengths are equal or not without actually working out their sizes. That's a very brief answer and so has possibly simplified it too much.

What is the difference between Geometry and Basic Geometry?
Q. I'm a junior in High School and last year, I took Basic Geometry. Not Geometry. What the hell is the difference? And this year, I'm supposed to take Algebra 2 like most other juniors but I'm taking Intermediate Algebra making myself feel like a sped and worried for the SAT Math Portion.
Asked by unknown - Mon Nov 10 18:25:25 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Actually most of my friends take geometry as 8th graders, but don't worry the classes you're taking are probably a bit slower than ordinary geometry. That doesn't mean you learn anything different, you'll probably learn less. And as long as you get the required number of math credits in highschool you'll be fine. Also don't worry about the SATs the math section or possibly is the writing section is the easiest parts and is mostly basic algebra material.

Is Plane Geometry a subdivision of Euclidian Geometry, or is the reverse true?
Q. I know that Euclidian Geometry is the geometry of lines and shapes. What, then, is Plane Geometry?
Asked by jimthecelt - Fri Feb 8 17:56:38 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Plane geometry is two-dimensional geometry - it is geometry on a surface, and does not include solids like spheres and cubes. Euclidean geometry is geometry where triangles always have angles that add up to 180 degrees, and two lines in a plane perpendicular to a 3rd line always remain equidistant from each other. In the 1800's, mathematicians discovered that there are reasonable geometric theories which violate the principles of Euclidean geometry - they are called non-Euclidean geometries. Most people never learn about non-Euclidean geometry unless they take an advanced college geometry course. Scientists now believe that the geometry of our universe is non-Euclidean. But in very small regions of space, the difference between… [cont.]

How much geometry do you need for pre cal?
Q. I signed up for pre cal for school this fall because i was suposed to take a geometry class this summer. I didnt get into the geometry class, and was wondering how much geometry i actually needed to know for pre cal. Do you think i should take it anyway, or change into a geometry class?
Asked by Nicole d - Thu Aug 2 20:16:48 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. You need geometry to get a good grasp on trig, and you need trig for pre-cal (some places combine trig and pre-cal). I hated geometry, but loved trig and had no problems in pre-cal. So, you just need a general understanding. As to memorizing theorums (or whatever they are called) and all that garbage...nah.

What are some examples of buildings I can build using geometry?
Q. I have a project where i have to show how geometry is udes in real life. I have to pick an item and do research on it (building, bridge, monuments etc.)and develop a 2 or 3 pg paper on how geometry affects this item. I also need to build a model of this item. Some examples are the bay bridge, eiffel tower a ferris wheel, and a shelf, but those are already taken. Im looking for some ideas on what to build so if you can give me some I'd really, really appreciate it. If u need any more info just tell me. Thanks!

A. Square, Rectangle, Triangle, Circle, Kite, Parallellogram, Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon, etc. Then there are the 3D equivalents such as Cube, Prisms, Cones, Cylinders, Spheres, and other polyhedra. We will be interested in the perimeter of each figure (or the distance around) so we can buy the right amount of material to fence these in real-life applications. We will be interested in the area of each figure (or how much material each contains) to buy the right amount of material to cover or pave them. For the 3D figures, we also want to know how much material each will hold (such as liquid or gas) as the volume. Each has formulae for these desired measurements -- and that is the basis for the study of Geometry in general -- the… [cont.]

A. Assemble the class into teams. Get one or two teams to draw geometric shapes to particular specifications, and cut them out with a "flap" attached to each side. Get another team or two to stick together the shapes into partial segments of a larger shape. Get your final one or two teams to assemble the finished models of 3D shapes. Alternately, get each student or team to work on a single, simpler project on their own. Award prizes for the fastest fully assembled model, the best constructed model, the best decorated model etc. You can use this free software to help you design your models:

How do you study for a geometry exam when you only have the night before to study?
Q. I have a 9th grade geometry final exam tomorrow afternoon, and i fell that I definitely haven't studied enough or properly.
Asked by sara - Tue May 27 18:54:48 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Do a really quick assessment on what you know for sure, what you know but need more review, and what you don't know. Spend your time wisely on that. Study on what you don't know using half of the time you have left, 1/4 the time on things you need more review, and 1/4 the time on things you know. Really good way to get an assessment is from your math book. Look for the exam questions at the end of the book. Or if you don't have a book, search online for geometry exams.

A. Algebra is the use of simple equations and variables to solve a problem. Geometry uses these equations and variables and applies then with various theorems to shapes. Algebra II is more complex equations and can deal with several variables in one problem. Hope that helps. As far as tutoring see if the school offers it, and if not then you can go to www.algebra.com or try sylvan, i have heard they are good.
