A. Solid - a substance with a defined volume and shape (Ice) Liquid - a substance with a defined volume, but no defined shape (water) Gas - a substance with no defined volume or shape (water vapour). Plasma - (not blood plasma Jessica C!) ionized gas - i.e., a gas in which some of its component atoms have been stripped of one or more of their electrons. These electrons are now free-moving, so plasma gas can conduct electricity. Examples include the gases found on the Sun, neon signs, lightning.

A. gas -- wind blowing over a mountain. there's a peak in Yosemite called Cloud's Rest because there's always a cloud on top of it. the cloud is there because as air is pushed up, it expands and cools, and some water condenses. as the air goes down the other side, the air compresses, and heats, and the cloud evaporates. liquid -- thermometer. when it gets warm, the liquid expands, allowing you to see how hot, or cold, it is. solid -- when you drive over a long metal bridge, there are what are called expansion joints, that look something like wide forks, or combs, with teeth (tines) that fit between those on the other side. as the metal heats up, those joints are forced together, and as they cool off, they are pulled apart.

Give evidences/situations that proves that a solid, liquid, gas, and plasma, still have spaces between molecules.?
Q. example of these situations that I need is in the study in solid, for example: the possibility of water to fill the empty spaces between tightly compact pebbles on a container which is an evidence of solid molecular spaces. How about in liquid?gas?plasma?

A. You can use "compression" to show that gases have space between the molecules Gases are readily compressible. But solids and liquids are not very compressible at all, indicating that there is little to no space between the molecules of solids and liquids. The problem here is what we define as "spaces" between molecules. Think of molecules as marbles. Lay out some marbles on the floor with a minimum of 5 cm between them. In this case there is space between the marbles. This would be analogous to a gas. Now bring the marbles together so that they are touching but not in a regular pattern. This is analogous to a liquid. Notice that there are spaces between the round marbles, but not much. Not enough to stick another marble in in… [cont.]

A. Hold an open bottle of ammonia solution near an open bottle of hydrochloric acid solution. You'll get clouds of white smoke. The ammonia and hydrogen chloride are both gases. They react to give clouds of ammonium chloride particles. Ammonium Chloride is a white solid at room temperature. Xenon and oxygen are both gases at room temperature, but xenon trioxide is an explosive solid. When it explodes there's nothing left. It has decomposed into xenon and oxygen.

A. Sublimation - substance changing state from solid directly to gas. Dry Ice - solid carbon dioxide (CO2) will turn directly from a solid to a gas without entering the liquid phase.

A. Ice cubes in your freezer gradually shrink because they evaporate into water vapor, and ice on your sidewalk in the winter, if it stays cold enough, slowly evaporates without first melting. Now for your question. That evaporation of a solid into a gas can be reversed and the gas turned directly back into a solid without first becoming liquid. As long as the gas itself is at a low enough pressure it can be turned directly into a solid by cooling it to a low enough temperature. For example, you could start with the gas compressed and then suddenly release the pressure (as when you use a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher). That produces at the same time the low enough pressure AND the low enough temperature for the gas to turn solid without… [cont.]

Would A Bubble Be Classed As A Solid, Liquid Or Gas?
Q. Like In Science Class, When You Have To Decided Whether Ice For Example Is A Solid, Liquid Or Gas, What Would A Bubble Be Classed As?
Asked by Robyn D - Sun Jan 7 10:36:22 2007 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This really depends on the situation. If you are talking about a bubble in a glass of water, then the shell of the bubble is a liquid and the inside is a gas - air. If you are talking about a bubble in a glass paperweight, the shell of the bubble is a solid and again, the inside is gas. If you are talking about oil and water, the shell of the bubble is a liquid, and the inside is also a liquid. See where I'm going with this?
