A. Adding heat (thermal energy) to ice can melt the ice to give you water. Also melting plastic or some other solid material can change it to a liquid. the key here is "melting" a solid by raising its temperature to its melting point.

what are the examples of liquid?
Q. what are the examples of liquid? like water; blood; oil; etc. does lava and melted metal counts? and is there anything else ?
Asked by r.e.i.g.n. - Thu May 24 05:59:31 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. ANYTHING can be examples of liquid but it all depends on the temperature. Like water is a liquid at room temperature i.e 25 C but at 0 C, it is a solid. At 100 C, it is a gas. Even oil can be solid, liquid or gas at different temperatures. So, it's important to mention the temperature. And yeah, everything molten is liquid.

A. Many household liquids are liquid-liquid mixtures. There are two different sorts: - Liquid-liquid solutions - Liquid liquid emulsions (where one liquid is not actually dissolved in another). liquid-liquid solutions: -alcoholic beverages; particularly spirits. A mixture of ethanol and water. denatured alcohol (methylated spirits), a mixture of methanol and ethanol. liquid-liquid emulsions: - salad dressing, an emulsion of oil, vinegar (acetic acid) and water (the acetic acid is in solution with the water, the oil; insoluble in water, forms an emulsion.)

Q. This is a question I must answer for my science class. It's due tomorrow. Are they asking to name just ONE fossil fuel & how it can change it's form? Are they asking to name THREE fossil fuels, one that is a solid, one that is a liquid, and one that is a gas? I don't know which one. I think it's talking about the first one.

Liquid water freezing to crystalline ice is an example of a system going to a state with a higher degree?
Q. of order. Which of the following is the best explanation of how this process can be compatible with the Second Law of Thermodynamics? Answer choices: 1. Heat is flowing out of the system reversibly, so it is allowed. 2. A higher degree of order means an increase in entropy, which is exactly what the Second Law requires. 3. The surroundings are undergoing changes in the direction of greater disorder. 4. Since no chemical change is taking place, the degree of order is not relevant. 5. Since the process is not occurring at 0 Kelvin, the Second Law is not relevant.

A. I think (3) is the correct answer. It makes the most sense. The formation of a solid (ice) from liquid (water) represents a decrease in entropy. This is NOT a spontaneous process. So, I think to counter this, the surroundings have to be undergoing a greater increase in entropy.

A. Chemicals are good, m'kay? Chemicals are our friends, m'kay? The best liquid is water, of course, It moderates the temperature of our atmosphere, is a nearly universal solvent ("without water, washing itself would be impossible"), and has peculiar behavior at its solid-liquid phase boundary that permits fish to survive the winter without freezing solid like little fishy popsicles. The worst liquid is the liquid metal T-1000 in "Terminator II: Judgment Day". That was a very bad liquid. Good and bad usually signify moral valences we assign to objects not because of the objects properties but because of a way, or the most common way, they're used by people. Alfred Nobel considered dynamite a force for great good, and it was - try building… [cont.]

A. Be careful, be very, very careful. By definition, an acid is a substance in solution, usually an aqueous solution. What you are probably referring to are compounds that COULD be acids if they were dissolved in water, but until they are dissolved in water they aren't acids. Take HCl, for instance. As a gas, HCl is called hydrogen chloride. Only when it is dissolved in water does it become hydrochloric acid. The anhydrous liquid, commonly called "hydrogen acetate", HC2H3O2, or acetic acid, or ethanoic acid, doesn't take on acidic properties until it is dissolved in water. Then there is benzoic acid, C6H5COOH, which is a weak, organic acid, and it is a solid. === Follow up === For all of those responders who said that HCl is a "liquid [cont.]
