Gas-Liquid Solution Example?
Q. What's a good example of a solution of a gas in a liquid? It has to be an example that uses household items. I need to release the gas from the liquid or obviously show that there is gas in the liquid. Also, I know soda works for this example, but I'd prefer something else. Please help.
Asked by Andi. - Mon May 18 17:15:48 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Any kind of soda is a gas liquid solution. Beer and sparkling wine and seltzer are also. The air dissolved in water is the air that fish breath. You can see it wen a glass of cold water is left to warm on the counter and air bubbles form. Alka Seltzer tablet in water is another example. Under water plants give off oxygen into the water.

A. I suspect because in liquids and gases the different compounds present can freely mix with each other and produce a homogeneous mixture so you don't have to deal with further complexity caused by the slower diffusion and non-homogeneous mixtures typically encountered with reactions of mixed solids. So, it makes the math easier.

A. Ethanol and water form an azeotrope, hence it is not possible to separate them out by simply distillation. Few ways to separate it: 1. Use another organic solvent, e.g. ether to extract the ethanol out from water 2. use a salt to remove the water 3. fractional distillation
