Q. An alloy is a solid solution that is composed of two or more metals. The metals are combined in specific proportions to make a material that is more suited for a specific function. An example: sterling silver, which is composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Calculate the number of moles of silver and the number of moles of copper that are needed to make 145 g of sterling silver. :S

Q. What is/are the differences in minerals (chemical compositions) with respect to solid solutions and impurities. Please include an example.
Asked by Gideon - Sat Oct 20 22:48:56 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Take a clear glass and pour in warm, distilled water. Stir in (with a sterile spoon) about 3-4 tablespoons of pure, white sugar. Watch and wait to see what happens. Sorry, but nothing will happen. Next take a pencil and tie a piece of clean, white kite string to its middle. Place the pencil on top of the glass so as to allow the pencil to sit on top with the other end of that kit string dippped into the warm, sugar/water solution. Watch and wait to see what happens. This time you will see that small seeds of sugar crystal will begin to form on the string. Over time, the seeds will start to produce more seeds which will begin to grow larger sugar cubes. These cubes will begin to grow into each other as space is limited on the kit… [cont.]

Is there any difference between making small ppm solutions from solid and liquid mother chemicals?
Q. For example pesticides are generally liquid and fertilizers like uria, supherphosphet etc are solid. How do we calculate ppm from these things?
Asked by arthur - Wed Aug 8 00:35:19 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The calculation is the same for the liquid and solids in figuring ppm. The problem that you are going to have to take into consideration is the solubility of the solids that you use. Figuring ppm of a solid that is only 50% soluble will throw your calculations way off.

What are the differences between a solid solution and a complete solid solution?
Q. Please include examples of each
Asked by GMAN - Thu Nov 13 04:20:11 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A complete solid solution is where a mineral can vary between having 100% of one element to 100% of a different element, or any amounts of both elements equaling up to 100% (Note: there can be more than two elements in a solid solution). An example of this is with plagioclase feldspar. Calcium-rich plagioclase is called anorthite and sodium-rich plagioclase is called albite. Bytownite, labradorite, and anothoclase are all calcium/sodium plagioclases. A partial solid solution is where the series stops short of 100% of an element. Pyroxenes are an example of this. There is a gap from about 80/20% magnesium/iron to 100% iron in clinopyroxene, so it is a partial solid solution.

solid solution?

Asked by Michael T - Wed Apr 30 14:34:42 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A solid solution is a solid-state solution of one or more solutes in a solvent. Such a mixture is considered a solution rather than a compound when the crystal structure of the solvent remains unchanged by addition of the solutes, and when the mixture remains in a single homogeneous phase. The solute may incorporate into the solvent crystal lattice substitutionally, by replacing a solvent particle in the lattice, or interstitially, by fitting into the space between solvent particles. Both of these types of solid solution affect the properties of the material by distorting the crystal lattice and disrupting the physical and electrical homogeneity of the solvent material. examples Alloys Glass

we want to know solutions on science subject?
Q. can solid diffuse into solid? give examples. why is ice at 273 K more effective in cooling than water at the same temperature? how are aquatic plants and animals able to survive?
Asked by inddrajit mitra and t.b.mitra - Fri Aug 17 12:24:37 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Because ice has to absorb heat = to it's heat of fusion before it can begin to rise in temperature. Water has no heat of fusion to overcome and so begins to rise in temperature immediately. Aquatic plants and animals utilize air and nutrients dissolved in the or feed off of other life.
