How to join an Alpha Kappa Alpha grad chapter?
Q. I was unable to pledge in undergrad because the chapter didn't have a line after my freshman year for whatever reasons. I'm new to the Philadelphia area, and don't know many people but I want to join the Philadelphia grad chapter, however I have no way to know where or how to meet members, since the websites haven't been updated since February with chapter events or programs. What do I do?

A. I am not a member of the organization but I attend grad school in the Philadelphia area. One of the major grad chapters for Alpha Kappa Alpha is Rho Theta Omega they have about four or five major events every year and they website is very up to date I recommend attending their annual community service event coming up in a couple of weeks or Philly's men is cooking in November. They chapters events are always very popular in the community so expect a very large turn out.

What advice would you give to join a grad sorority chapter?
Q. Hello, What advice would you give to join a grad sorority chapter after undergrad?
Asked by Caramelbutterfly24 - Tue Jun 12 08:45:20 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best advice I would give you, is continue performing community service...And if possible, try to perform community service in the area where your the chapter you desire to join. Chances are you will run into members and can establish a friendship with them. Also check to see if that particular chapter has a website. If they do, attend as many events that they have so they can get to know you. This is very important. I always tell people that please be aware that unlike undergrad chapters, grad chapters don't have intake as often. Some every two years, some every five or six years. It varies. But if this is in your heart, and something you really want to do, then stick with it, attend the events, and when the time comes for intake… [cont.]

What is the difference between pledging Grad chapter or undergraduate?
Q. I want to become a member of a sorority but I won't be able to pledge until I go to graduate school because my current university does not have Greek organizations. I'm hesitant to, however because its often said that grad's are looked down upon.

A. Honestly, as both a grad student and a former sorority member I have no idea how you are going to have enough time for both. Grad school is crazy enough without all of the distractions that go along with Greek life.

What is the best way to pledge grad chapter?
Q. I want to pledge a sorority, but i already graduated. I wanted to know what is the best way to go about it. I know I should just volunteer with them, but the website doesnt have any of their upcoming events on it. Can I just ask them? Or will that get me black listed? Not sure if this matters, but its a Black sorority.

Is it better to join a paper sorority or join grad chapter?
Q. I know joining a paper sorority will eventually be bad news if you ever get confronted and don't know your info or have "stories" to tell, but I also heard graduate chapters aren't respected. Either way it seems like a lose lose situation, but which is the bigger loss?

A. I guess I can only give my perspective of a minority greek - not exactly your situation as I had a process for my org, but determine what is most important to you. Is it the organization itself and it's rich history? If you go paper, will you take it upon yourself to ensure you learn as much as possible about your beloved organization so there is no issue about knowing your info? You will create memories as a sister with your future sorors, no? What is exactly the issue with going grad? Are you concerned that it isn't "hard" enough? In the long run, that doesn't even matter. As an adult, later in life, it's what you do as a member that matters most, will you be that leader? The nay sayers can't say much if you end up being a great… [cont.]

A. I am not a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha but I know that membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha on the graduate level is by invitation only. You would first need to locate a chapter in your area, and start attending events the chapter is hosting in order to become acquainted with the members. Visit aka1908.com for more information. Does Delta Sigma Theta GRAD chapter do their intake process every other year as in undergrad?
Q. Or do they have an interest meeting every year ?
Asked by EyeCandy8607 - Wed May 21 10:38:28 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Hi there, To answer you question, no grad chapters to not have intake every other year. Most grad chapters only hold intake when they feel there is a need. Unlike undergraduate, grad chapters don't have to worry about sorors graduating, and don't have to host as many Rush's to keep the chapter alive. I know of one particular grad chapter that hasn't had an intake in over 5 years. So the primary reason for grad to host intake is mainly based on the chapter's need. This is one of the reasons why prospective members find it harder to join an alum chapter vs. an undergrad chapter. Hope this answers your question...

A. Expect negative comments as I have seen in the past. I will give a positive one: The graduate level pledge process is generally by invitation only. In undergrad, they announced the membership tea. After undergrad, you will need to let graduate members know that you are interested. When they do intake, you will be considered. You have a perfect situation. You have your mentors. Talk to them about your interest. These are mature women who will have left behind the petty, spiteful, mean-spirited ways of those few greek undergrads (we all know this happens because we are all human) who didn't vote for or convinced her soror to vote against an applicant because i.e. she is dating her old boyfriend (a random example). A. Yes, your degree would have to be from an accredited university in order to become a member both on the undergraduate or graduate level. If you go to grad school and complete your advanced degree from and accredited school you may be able to apply for membership at that time. Good Luck in your pursuits!

Asked by A.B. - Tue Oct 6 23:03:56 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are grown, so "permissable" does not apply to you unless we're talking about the law. However, it would be unwise to ask a member about MIP--or for those letters to even leave your lips with a member in the room. Ask how you can support the chapter: what fundraisers you can get involved in; how can you contribute to their causes; can you buy tickets to event(s) (this is ALWAYS yes, lol)? Let one member that you know very well know that you're interested in joining the sorority. Once you've expressed your interest and you've shown that you're (1) financially solvent (AKA is a very expensive privilege), (2) interested in serving the community, and (3) a woman of good character, you have done your part. Some chapters have MIP often,… [cont.]

Also, here is more information from the www.aka1908.org website: Undergraduate Membership Requirements: * Matriculation as a full-time student where the campus chapter is located; or matriculation as a full-time student in a school in the community where a city chapter of undergraduate status is located; * Completion of at least one successful grading period (or a defined by the university) as a full-time student at the institution where application is made; * A cumulative average of C+ and semester average of C+ immediately prior to submitting an application for… [cont.]

If you are interested in joining an AKA grad chapter, do you need a "sponsor" and what is a "sponsor"?
Q. I'm interested in joining a grad chapter, but don't know if I will need a sponsor. I have heard other interests mention it, but I'm not sure what a sponsor does for interests.
Asked by hopefulone - Sun Dec 10 20:00:26 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A sponsor is another person who offers guidance and support on a one-on-one relationship. Our sponsors give us the support that we need till we can know the group well enough that we can walk on our own, but they will always be there when we need then, well at least they should be. You can look at a sponser as being a big brother/sister or mentor as well.

A. More than likely, with such an established organization as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., you should be able to go to their main website. While there, mouse over 'by merit and culture', then 'membership', and then finally click on 'perspective members'. They have it broken down into Undergraduate and Graduate Requirements After ensuring that you meet said requirements, make certain there's a Graduate Chapter available in the area of your selected University/College, and just go from there. If you have any questions, there's usually an Expansion/Recruitment or even Chapter/Entity Level sisters that you can ask. Ask anything and everything, as this should be one of the most informed decisions of your collegiate career. Good luck,… [cont.]

going grad chapter of Zeta Phi Beta?
Q. I'm graduating in the fall of this year, but the only thing that I want to know is do some grad chapters take people in once a year, or once a semster? how does it work and how do i go about doing it. I don't choose to do undergrad anymore. too much BS down here in my state. although, I will be 21, yet i'll just have a degree so i can still do some stuff that undergrads do because of my age.

A. I am a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, however, I pledged during my undergrad years (still am a undergrad). If you know of any Grad members to contact them. Or better yet, find an address for the Chapter you want to join and write them an interest letter. Or if you can find an email address that would be helpful also. Have you also tried the national address? www.zphib1920.org If you need any help finding an address or a person of contact email me at angel200236618@yahoo.com

A. If you're trying to join a grad chapter, i'm guessing that you are already a member. If not, you must have an invitation to join a grad chapter. Start by researching the chapters in your area. Obtain the contact information from the chapter's "president" (no lingo on the 'net) and contact her in writing. Call around and see if you can gain permission to attend a meeting and see what the chapter is about--sisterhood, community service, etc. Pick the chapter that you like best.

A. I've never heard of any sorority pledging someone who has already graduated with the Bachelors degree. You could call your school's office of Greek Life and find out if there are some sororities who do this and then they can get you in touch with them so you can see if you like any of the sororities and the individual members. Don't feel like you have to join the first one, there's nothing wrong with gathering all the data and making a fully informed decision about something as important as joining a sorority.

A. Are their any members of Alpha Kappa Alpha that attend your church, or are their any members that are involved in the same community service events that you take part in? A good way to network with members of Alpha Kappa Alpha is through community service.
