Q. Are there any Delta Sigma Theta grad chapters in the Atlanta area having a rush?
Asked by JOAN - Wed Aug 5 17:36:42 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You must check the individual websites of the alumnae chapters to determine whether or not they are having a Rush. They will post that information on their website, how long they have it posted on their website is another question. You must be diligent. You can also contact the Chapter President to get more information about activities that the chapter may be sponsoring or participating in. Hope this helps and good luck!

A. There is no initiation process for aka in the graduate chapter. you must be invited by one of the member of the graduate chapter. In order for that to happen you must get to know some of the members by attending community service and other events that they may have that is open to the public in your area. A. Yes, if you have completed your graduate program and are able to submit that transcript, then it can be considered with your application instead of your undergraduate GPA.

Joining a grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta?
Q. I have two undergrad degrees. I am interested in joining a grad chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. My first undergrad degree my gpa is a little shy of 2.5 however my second undergrad degree my gpa is well over 2.5. I am currently pursuing my masters degree but would like to try to join before I complete the masters degree. Which degree would be used in determining my eligibility?
Asked by The Mrs. - Mon Nov 17 00:52:34 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If your second degree is at the same school then they will use your gpa combined (So if you have a 2.3 and a 2.8 then they will more than likely average that out to see what your average and cumulative gpa is overall) Also just to give you heads up as of Jan 1st the GPA has changed for becoming a member of DST. The new requirement will be a 2.75 so you also want to keep that in mind. Good luck to you, and please let me know if you have any other questions!

A. Honestly, as both a grad student and a former sorority member I have no idea how you are going to have enough time for both. Grad school is crazy enough without all of the distractions that go along with Greek life.

Q. I know joining a paper sorority will eventually be bad news if you ever get confronted and don't know your info or have "stories" to tell, but I also heard graduate chapters aren't respected. Either way it seems like a lose lose situation, but which is the bigger loss?

Is it the organization itself and it's rich history? If you go paper, will you take it upon yourself to ensure you learn as much as possible about your beloved organization so there is no issue about knowing your info? You will create memories as a sister with your future sorors, no? What is exactly the issue with going grad? Are you concerned that it isn't "hard" enough? In the long run, that doesn't even matter. A. I presume you are seeking information about graduate-level membership in a greek-letter organization. Every organization is different, but it will help if you get to know some members in your area through community service and similar activities. I believe in some organizations, you have to be invited to apply by a member.

A. For more information about the Sorority, it's history and mission, please review the national website, www.deltasigmatheta.org. Also read "In Search of Sisterhood" by Paula Giddings. You need to research the chapters in your area and attend chapter sponsored events. That way, you will have interaction with the chapter members and get to know them better and can make an informed decision.

Hello fellow aspirant, I was told by other members of the sorority( Alpha Kappa Alpha) that the best way to make yourself noticeable to other members is by attending public events that particular Grad chapter in your area is hosting. Alot of graduate chapters will have their up and coming events listed on their website(from what I've observed), you can go on the sorority's national website,www.aka1908.org to see what graduate chapters are in your area. Also another good way is being involved in community service in your area, you'll be surprised who all you will come in contact with just by being active in your community. A. You are grown, so "permissable" does not apply to you unless we're talking about the law. However, it would be unwise to ask a member about MIP--or for those letters to even leave your lips with a member in the room. Ask how you can support the chapter: what fundraisers you can get involved in; how can you contribute to their causes; can you buy tickets to event(s) (this is ALWAYS yes, lol)? Let one member that you know very well know that you're interested in joining the sorority. Once you've expressed your interest and you've shown that you're (1) financially solvent (AKA is a very expensive privilege), (2) interested in serving the community, and (3) a woman of good character, you have done your part. A. I'm pretty sure you are talking about Delta Sigma Theta (it's a black thing). I am a member of AKA and yes you are correct if you "pledge" grad chapter you will get no respect, as a matter of fact most grad chapters don't even pledge, which is why they are called "paper," meaning you sign your name to some papers and are a member, without pledging... Paper greeks are looked down on for this exact reason. The logic is why should I have to work myself to death in order to become a member of the organization just to let some paper member walk in or have a "cake walk"?

Or better yet, find an address for the Chapter you want to join and write them an interest letter. Or if you can find an email address that would be helpful also. Have you also tried the national address? www.zphib1920.org If you need any help finding an address or a person of contact email me at angel200236618@yahoo.com

A. I am a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, however, I pledged during my undergrad years (still am a undergrad). If you know of any Grad members to contact them. Or better yet, find an address for the Chapter you want to join and write them an interest letter. Or if you can find an email address that would be helpful also. Have you also tried the national address? www.zphib1920.org If you need any help finding an address or a person of contact email me at angel200236618@yahoo.com

I am interested in pledging A.K.A.grad chapter. Does anyone know exactly how this process works?
Q. I plan to get my Masters degree in the next year in business or entrepreneurship if available. I'm scouting out campuses in the area now, but I'm very interested in finding out if I would be able to pledge the sorrority, A.K.A. in grad school.

A. More than likely, with such an established organization as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., you should be able to go to their main website. While there, mouse over 'by merit and culture', then 'membership', and then finally click on 'perspective members'. They have it broken down into Undergraduate and Graduate Requirements After ensuring that you meet said requirements, make certain there's a Graduate Chapter available in the area of your selected University/College, and just go from there. If you have any questions, there's usually an Expansion/Recruitment or even Chapter/Entity Level sisters that you can ask. Ask anything and everything, as this should be one of the most informed decisions of your collegiate career. Good luck,… [cont.]
