A. Membership into most BLGOs is by membership only. Get incontact with members of the grad chapter members regarding membership. A good way to met the members is through community service.

Can I pursue graduate membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha?
Q. I graduated from college with barely a 2.4, however I am currently enrolled in a graduate degree program that I will complete in two years. I know that on the national website it states you must either have a 2.5 OR have a graduate degree. If I am currently pursuing a grad degree, will I meet the requirement in spite of my low gpa or do I have to have completed it already? I know that graduate membership is by invite only. To clarify, when I say can I pursue membership, what I am talking about are all of the steps one takes to increase their chances of being extended an invitation to join.

A. I am not a member but I know you will have to have earned your masters degree so your undergrad grade point average won't affect your chances at becoming a member. May I invite you to join akawannabes, a yahoo group that is designed to assist interested ladies in our pursuits in becoming members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. I know that there is some negative perspectives regarding certain groups on Yahoo but I am the owner of this group and I work hard to keep the content of the group positive. In this group there is a frequently asked questions section, and a "dos and don'ts" section as well. I believe that this group will be very beneficial to you with your pursuits. To join go Yahoo groups and type in akawannbes to join.Good luck… [cont.]

Are graduate students able to go through the membership process for undergraduate fraternities/sororities?
Q. Specifically for black sororities of the Divine 9: I did not join undergrad because the sorority I wanted to be a member of was having problems. I am now in graduate school and I am still interested in joining. Are graduate students able to go through the membership process of undergraduate chapters?
Asked by theonlyway8 - Wed Oct 24 22:48:24 2007 - - 4 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Specific to the Divine 9. If you are a graduate and still interested in the organization of your choice, you will have to apply for membership in a graduate chapter. I suggest that you request membership information from that organization's national website or regional websites. Good luck!

Graduate Membership Alpha Kappa Alpha?
Q. When the Graduate Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha's Membership Intake Process is by invitation only, does this mean that one is not allowed to write a letter of interest? I prefer that a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha answers this question. Thanking you in advance
Asked by Samantha - Wed Mar 25 00:38:01 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Good Morning! Being that membership on the grad level is by invitation only, the need for letters of interest are not accepted. They are only taken on the level of membership through which admission can be solicited and that is the undergraduate level. Please see our national website for further information regarding membership criteria: You are welcomed to email me for further information/assistance. I will help you with any allowable assistance. Undergraduate vs. Graduate membership of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated?
Q. I am a college senior who is seriously interested in membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. For various (personal) reasons I have been unable to seek membership until this school year. I am interested in learning more about the sorority and was wondering if it would be appropriate to seek out a mentor in an area grad chapter, especially since there is a good chance that my undergraduate institution will not be doing MIP in 2009-2010. I am prepared to attend area graduate chapter events ( I have already attended many undergraduate ones) to network, as I would like to build lasting bonds in the chapter I would (potentially) be invited to join after I graduate college. Would it be considered too forward to begin this process… [cont.]
Asked by kellyblue - Sat Sep 26 18:29:23 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The biggest difference in undergraduate and graduate chapter is that graduate chapter is invitation only. If you have a graduate member who you are rather close too, then I would confine in her your interest but just remember everyone is not as receptive. If you are carrying yourself with high ethical and moral standards, I don't see why a graduate chapter would not offer membership to you. Just be yourself and if it is might to happen, it will. As for programs, please go to aka1908.com. You will see our national programs, as for chapter programs whether it be graduate or undergraduate, they can vary depending on chapter.

Can anyone list the required materials for graduate membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha?
Q. I found the pre-rush checklist, community service and interest forms for undergraduate membership which basically guide you on what you will have to turn in and would like to know of a similar list for those interested in becoming graduate members. I know it is by invitation but would like to get an idea of just what I would need to turn in. Like is there a community service requirement for graduate membership and about how many hours would I need to have? I know with undergrad the community service has to have been done within a max of 2 yrs, is it the same with graduate membership? I just would like as much info on the paperwork requirements to try to meet all requirements before pursuing graduate membership?
Asked by LadyS - Mon Jul 7 01:29:09 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Since Graduate Chapter membership is by invitation only that information can NOT be shared until one recieves an invitation. As you can imagine, if we require undergraduates to complete community service then you could assume that we expect the same if not more from graduates. As we are primarily about Sisterhood, Service, and Scholarship we pay GREAT attention to the community service endeavors of potential candidates for membership. Good Luck

Graduate Membership in black sorority?
Q. I am interested in xyz sorority on the graduate level. I read a lot of people saying that you should do community service with them, but how do you find out about open service projects? All I find out about are the fundraisers and other programs that are more social. I know that they are out there doing community service... Since it's not advertised, does that mean that its not open to non-members?
Asked by TresJolie - Wed Dec 12 16:44:55 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Try going to their website. Most grad chapters have websites and they have a section that list all upcoming events. I think that is a great start. Also check and see if they have a mailing list that you can join. Most community service is open to non-members. Good Luck

I have contacted the local chapter and when i got a response i was told to refer to the national website. I understand its invitation only but how am i suppose to show any interest? If any member of this organization could respond it would be greatly appreciated.

A. Interest is expressed through individual action. By becoming a leader within your community, you will inevitably be aligned with at least one member of the organization. As my above Soror expressed- through your church, volunteer efforts, job etc. there are Women of Alpha Kappa Alpha. In addition, I applaud your persistence. If this is something that lives in your heart, let nothing stop you. Identify the necessary steps to reach your goal and make it happen. There are Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha on your city council, active in the urban league, at your church, in the classroom and boardroom. Position yourself so that Alpha Kappa Alpha women can get a sense of who you are simply by being an active part of your community. As a new… [cont.]

How different is becoming/being a graduate member of Delta Sigma Theta from being an undergraduate member?
Q. I want to know how different becoming and being an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Inc. is from becoming/being an undergraduate member. I'm not asking for any confidential organizational secrets I'm speaking in general. This question could also probably apply to all sororities as well. I'm 24 and am currently getting my masters. I know that if I were to join the organization it wouldn't be through the chapter at my school but through the graduate chapter. Is graduate membership a lot different than undergraduate? I had a little bit of interaction/exposure to the grad chapter where I used to live and it did seem quite different but my experience isn't very extensive. A. Our intake process, by the book, is the same. However, there will be a different sort of bonding process than as an undergrad because we don't live together. The specific service activities for each chapter are different, but all are guided by our Five Point Thrust. I have found that alumnae chapters have just as many social activities, but they are different because we are grown women. We don't throw many parties like our undergraduate sorors, but we aren't in college anymore. :) Also, we do step. In my opinion, *if* you become a Delta, it doesn't matter whether it was undergrad or alumnae. If you want to be a member of my sorority, it is more important what you do *after* you become a member than how you come in. If you make… [cont.]

A. Yes there is. Undergrads at most schools come in a lot and every year more come in. Most schools accept about 1,000-2,000 applicants freshman. And the acceptance rate for undergrads is a lot higher than graduate. Undergrads come in to school for an associates or bachelors degree and some go on to try for Grad school. Grad school is tough if you want to go a good one and get a really good education. You have to not only have a high GPA for grad school, but you also have to stand out from other applicants. The top Grad schools don't accept many grads and the acceptance rate is really low and significantly lower than undergrads. The process is different because in Grad school they look more into you and what you have done. They look… [cont.]

How do I get information for Alpha Kappa Alpha graduate/ city wide membership?
Q. I posted a question long ago about community events to introduce myself to the graduate chapters here in Japan, to no avail despite the generous information from sweetpea. As a techer, there just seemed to be no plausible way to find/ get to community service or events open to the public anywhere. The international chapter website has not helped. I'll be leaving Japan and moving to Duluth, GA in April. I have contacted the local graduate chapters by email and still no response. I wonder if I come off strange just for asking about an events calendar being sure not to solicit membership. My hope is to have better success in at least getting information on events and membership once I move. Any advice?
Asked by Progress is my occupation - Mon Sep 7 04:57:25 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Wow. Usually someone will email you back. If they have a website the events that are open to the public should be on there. I say try again and if no one contacts you wait until you get to Atlanta. I also live here and I know what you are going through.

A. Greetings! If you are seeking Graduate membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha, the answer is no. You may only be accepted into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated through a Graduate Chapter. As you may or may not know, membership into a Graduate Chapter is by invitation only. General Membership is for undergraduate prospectives who desire membership, but there is not a chapter on their campus (that hasn't been suspended). I'm sorry that your options are limited, but that is the way our membership guidelines are setup. I am a General Member because I was already a Graduate member (having been initiated as an undergraduate). Also, here is some additional information from the Sorority's website: Process The Sorority's official graduate… [cont.]

A. Visit the offcial website, www.deltasigmatheta.org, to find out information on how to become a member. Also make sure you are doing volunteer work within your community. We are a public service organization and we extend membership to young ladies that serve their community. If you are actively doing volunteer work then you will meet a Delta.

How much does a membership at Washington Sports Club cost?
Q. I'm moving to DC in February after graduating from college, and I'm looking for a gym to replace the free gym at school. I checked WSC's website, but it doesn't list any prices. Does anyone know how much the Gold level or other memberships cost for the Glover Park location? Or does anyone recommend another gym? Thanks!

A. Washington Sports Club has a new member fee of $100. (That's on their specials.?) Each month, costs about $70 a month. You should call them to see what kind of specials they are running! Besides Washingotn Sports Club, you should also check out Bally's and Sport and Health. They all cost about the same. There are some local gyms in DC. Such as Results.

How does one go about finding graduate events for Alpha Kappa Alpha if there is no website for upcoming events
Q. Although I know of several graduate chapters in my area, I don't know how to go about finding events. I know that the process (from the time you start going to events to the time you may get accepted) can be years and that membership is by invitation only. I would love to be able to at least let the members know that I am here and very interested so that I could at least be of consideration. I know that discretion is key and I don't want offend anyone by my questions. If there are any members who read this that could be of any assistant; especially those that matriculated through a graduate chapter, I would truly be greatful. Thanks in advance.
