What is the best graphing calculator for higher level high school courses?
Q. Next year I am taking honors geometry and honors pre-calc. Junior year I will be taking an honors or AP chemistry course, and an AP Calculus AB course. Senior year, I will be in honors or most likely AP physics. What do you recommend is the best graphing calculator for all these courses that will last, and will be helpful on my SATs and standardized testings. Personal experience helps, thanks! Also, excluding the rules of my high school teachers, are all of these graphing calculators aloud on the sats?

A. The Texas Instruments (TI) 89, definitely, OR the TI-92 which is bulkier but has a keyboard, which can come in handy if you wish to write programs or just insert some notes and formulas in your calculator's memory. These calculators come with a cable and a CD that enables you to connect them to your computer very easily. This way you'll be able to copy whatever TI programs or text files you have created and/or downloaded from your computer to your calculator and vice versa. The cable can also be used to connect two TIs together and exchange files with colleagues.

Without a graphing calculator, how do you find the median in a frequency distribution?
Q. I do not get to use a graphing calculator... so, with a regular calc. how would i find the median in a Frequency distribution chart? i know how to when there is no freq. distribution chart, but with one i dont know how to find the median...

A. It would be in the center of the data on the frequency distribution chart. Very similar to finding it when you just have the raw data listed in order.

What texas instruments graphing calculator should i buy?
Q. I plan on taking the Sat 2 math level 2 in June and then Calculus next year. I need a graphing calculator for both but I'm not sure which one i should buy. Money is not really a factor. I hear the TI89 is better than the TI84 but the Ti84 is easier to program applications and stuff. If anyone could give me some general advice on the two that would be great.

A. The TI-84 and the TI-89 are both excellent calculators. I would definitely suggest that you speak to the teacher of the math class before purchasing one. The TI-89 might not be allowed because it contains a computer algebra program - or it might be preferred by the teacher because of this. In my classes (statistics and business calculus), I prefer that students not use the TI-89. However, if I were teaching the major's calculus sequence, I might prefer the TI-89. If the teacher has no preference AND money is no object, then go ahead and get the TI-89 Platinum model. It will be a little more complicated to learn to use, but it has many more features that the TI-84 does not.
