How does a Hawaii resident register a car they bought and intend to use only the mainland?
Q. I'm just curious, I've been pondering too much today. Say a Hawaiian student is going to school in Indiana or somewhere. They decide they want a car while at school that they only intend to use on the mainland (it'd be a rich student, eh). How would they get Hawaii plates? Because don't you have to register the vehicle for the state in which you reside? lol Just wondering

A. I grew up in Hawaii and went to college in Iowa. My Dad originally had a car which was registered and licensed in Hawaii, and we shipped it to the mainland. It was later passed on to one of my brothers (in Nebraska), and I bought my own car while still in Iowa. The car I bought was registered with Iowa plates. I also voted in Iowa and paid Iowa taxes. (If I stayed there long enough, I'd even qualify for Iowa tuition rates.) I listed my residency as Iowa. While my Dad owned the car that the kids used, it was registered with Hawaii plates. When it was eventually sold (more like scrapped), the title was transferred like an out-of-state sale. He never shipped it back to Hawaii.
